The Manner in which we Impressed a Recent Visitor. (Correspondence of The Ledger.) Blacksburg. S. C., May 24th.—As the people of Gaffney have just finish* <d a handsome Presbyterian church, the church appointed the ni Sabbath in May as the time, and the Bev. Dr. j Thornwell as the Minister to officiate i I at the dedication of the church to j j the service to Almighty God, in the I dispensation of the gospel of Christ. , j Vorr correspondent was privileged , ■ to participate in the solemn services i of the oevasion, much to his edifica* j tion and enjoyment. Tlie building I itself was completed in the most modern style of architecture. In fact, it is one of the handsomest churches we have seen any where, in Columbia or any of tpe Piedmont towns along this belt of counties. The success of this daring enterprise by such a small body of Christians, numbering only about ~AJ members, is largely due to the working *iuali- ties of their pastor, Bro. Robertson. Only u few years ago, he took charge of this church, with scarcely a score of members, and unwilling to prom ise more than ijiloO for pastor’s sala- i °f ; sex of any other locality. We also I enjoyed the hospitality of -Mr. Wurd- 1 law . at his lovely home on Frederick i street. He is engaged as clerk or 1 book-keeper, in the Cotton Manufnc- j turing Company of Gaffney. He is a son of Dr. Wardlaw, of Abbeville, i and intimately connected with the honored familv of that name. We visited the Limestone Spring j Female College, while on a visit to Gaffney. It is now presided ever by Professor Mack, and is doing a grand work for the girls of Spartanburg, and other counties. The College grounds proper, embraces one of tne most picturesque localities to be found : in tile Piedmont belt, where nature has done so much in the way of ru- j mantic scenery.with pure water, and a climate unsurpassed fur health and ! comfort. In fact the people of Gaffney all pull to- ; get her whenever anything is propos- j ed for their advancement, either reli- | giously, socially, or in h business ca- ] pacity. And while they are thus united, yet they do not exhibit any selfishness towards rival towns, but sincerely desire the prosperity ef such and all. On Monday night Rev. Mr. Adams came to time, and took up the preach ing services, and carried them on twice a day ’till Wednesday night. The style of preaching of the two brethren spoken of, is very- much alike—plain, practical and spiritual. Bro. Adams, while he did not ap prove the plan of calling up people to the anxious seat, and such like methods, yet did not criticise them, but thought that after faithfully preaching the gospel that then the Holy 'Spirit was the only agency to apply and sanctifying, while the pro position alone, j« “♦•rict'y true, ay a:; abstract proposition, yet God does ‘ choose to bless the methods alluded | tout times, as He sees fit, and while ! others may adopt them and be bless- j ed so with those who do not use ! them, are blessed also, so as Christ \ said to his disciples once after r*.- - turning from a preaching tour, to ! report to their .Son and Master, that 1 they found one casting out devils in thy name, and we forbid him, Christ said forbid him not, for those who are not against us. are for us. Now it only remains for me to rt- j turn thanks to the people of Gaffney 1 for their hospitality to your corres pondent, while a guest in their beau tiful town. Among others of equal hospitality, I must mention the names of Rev. Mr. Robertson, of the 1'res- byterian church, and our old Dickens friend and brother, Newton Folger, ticket agent on the Southern road, and their families. I would not be doing justice to my own feelings, if 1 were not to mention our newly-made friend, young Mr. Reden, who is con nected with the Reden family of Greenville, with whom 1 have been acquainted for many years. He kind ly asked me to take dinner with him at his boarding house at Mr. and Mrs. Lipscomb's, where we met with two of my old gentlemen friends, Mr. Butler and Mr. Gantt, the former we met in Columbia, and the latter whom i met at his father's. Mr. Lar ry Gantt, of Spartanburg These young men are promising lawyer's. Mr. Butler was a candidate in the last primary, and was beaten, but he is now a candidate for matrimony, and lie stands a fair chance of being elected. Not only was my visit to Mr. Lipscomb’s rewarded with a magnificent dinner, (for it took us two days to digest it,) but we met with some charming ladies whose ac quaintance constitutes an oasis in my lift. The pleasure of my visit to Gaffney was greatly enhanced by meeting with the editor and printers of Tm; Lkugku. They are making an excel lent paper, and all are printers. Be ing an oid printer ourselves, of course our interview was of the pleasantest kind. We met there an old printer by the name of James Raines, who is nearly three score and ten, and still works at the ease, and can set from .> to ff00<»ein? per day, Mr. DeCarap, the editor, is also a printer, who is an apt and ready writer with his pen, and can set type with proficiency. His score of local contributors are usually good, and adds much to the interest of the paper. To witnes, these men at work so complacently- especially the old man, almost pere suaded us to wish to return even in old age. T. A. li. .— — Th* Westfield (Ind.)
