OUR MILL PEOPLE When the Mills shut down at 12 o’clock on each Saturday. We feel a certain kind of pleasant emotions pass through our souls. We know | that the hour has arrved when the worthy, industrious people who per- ate them will have u short time of rest and recreation. A rest and reeration by hard work honestly earned. And when they appear on our streets in the afternoon we see in thmr faces the mirth and content ment that only exist after duty has , been well performed. We behold the bright throng of mill people; we wonder how many great mill men will it furnish for the future and trust that there will he ( <mny. *• ■ The Edit m of this paper like another great man, got his dates I mixed, and had to get out of town sooner than he. expected in order to he in Newberry on time to meet ills brethern of the press of the State. Ko if this issue of The Ledger is not all right just blame him for it and not us fellows he ieft behind who . will not get any barbecue. General Gordon's presence in Gaffney is an event that should and will long be remembered. The sight of him renewed in his old fellow Md- diers the fires of the sixties. It re newed in them memories of the long ago. Memories bright and memories Bad. Persons accused of grave crimes, who think they have covered their trucks weil, generally insist on inv> li tigation and are sure to offer to te (;• fy the proposed investigation. Buffalo Briefs. ' (CorrcsRondence of The ledger.) Buii ALO, May 2i.—Everything is dull and monotonous. Lverybody is busy with their work, therefore, next to being out of the world for amusement is to he at Buffalo. 1 have been on the sick list several days since my last letter, it is very humiliating to he sick hut then it shows me what an insignificant lit tle creature ! am. Humility is a very essential element of religion and yet very unpopular. A fellow can nurse malice in his bosom for years and then forgive in the twinkle of an eye when he thinks he is near ing the glories of eternity. When people wont forgive each oilier it is evident that they hud rather he reprobates than Christians, that they had rather seem to he good than to really he so. Such people are not haul to find. Always look at i.elf iirst. Nobody is perfect. Auditor Camp spent Saturday and Sunday at home. We uie always glad to see his genial face. Buffalo don’t propose to relinquish all her claim on him because a major por tion of his time is spent at Gaffney. Buffalo has the honor of furnishing the new county two very able officers ; Col. Camp, the auditor, and Mr. It. K. Porter our township supervisor. Within the last two years Mr. Por ter has done much to improve the condition of our public roads and it Bet ins that his work is only begun. Havid Gaston returned home from Wake 1 ’orcst College a few days ago a full fflodged graduate. He is the first that lias ever hailed from Buffalo but still we have never been in the back woods. On the 1th inst. Mr. Allen W. Holt, one of tin- old laud marks of Buffalo, and his wife, Mrs. Polly Holt, were treated to a very agreeable surprise. Karly in the morning his children, grand children, friends and relatives begun pouring in until about 7.’> ar rived to celebrate his 77th birthday with a family reunion and u picnic. The occasion was highly enjoyed by •II present and by none more than j by Mr. and Mrs. Holt. May they live to enjoy many such reunions. That M. rgeaiit Jasper was horn in this sect ion is a new revelation to the people of Buffalo. Tradition has It that Col. Williams who was wound ed at the halt I* of Kings Mt. unddhd while tiie Americans were on a re treat to recross Broad River, is hur ried on the Miutz plantation. Kince the colonial period several notable persons have been connected wilii the history of Buffalo. Among them is the name of Louisa Bridges. Though , she lias been dead more tliun a quarter of a century yet her mem- < or> is fresh in the minds of the pco* j pie. The story of her untimely death is very pathetic. A picnic is on the programme for the near future. If it conies off Mr. Ed. you will receive an invitatiyn to spend a day in the country with common people. Ba< hklok. (And if possible to do so 1 will be there. Let it take place in about three weeks.—Kd.J —- - -*•»• *- - — Ezell Dots. (CorrtsponUence of The Led” r.) Scruggs, of this place has an old coin bearing the date of 1722 lie wants a bid on it, it was found near the monument at Cowpens Bat tleground. J. M. Lamb had a swarm of bees to leave him this week another soul made happy when he finds the tree they occupy. Park! 1'ark! You can’t hear nothing but everybody around tiiis place is very anxious about the park us all think it is uline place fora park as for my part I don’t know what they are talking about I wish some good old friend would give me some day light on the subject that J want to know the size of the park they are talk ing of building, how it will he con structed and of what material will be used in the construction of the same : also I think that a park will have to have a keeper or something of the sort to take care of it after it is built as you all know this is a wild corner in the new county. Don't too many speak at once—one or two will do. Blue Hawk. From Far Off Kansas. (Correspondence of The Lodger.) Pa»Ton :f, Ark.. May Iff.—All the Cherokee county people who live here are well and enjoying good health. Times are good out here consider ing everyt liing. The days are warm hut the nights are cool and we have had frost half the month of May so fur. Crops are looking well. 1 vent down in the Cherokee Na tion to preach last Sunday, the DJth of this month. I am preaching tLree Sundays in the month to the Indians this year. <*n my way there and back ! passed through a wheat field that contained ff.OOo acres, ft was the finest crop of wheat you ever saw. We will have to hustle to get ready. Now you know Bud has put off marrying a long time and I feel sun- there will he some grand doings at oh! Milledgeville. 1 would like to ;e tin re in time. J. M. MCU. * * Founding the Preacher. Rev. B. P. Robertson, who with his family lias been hoarding for some months, took po. session last week of the pretty cottage on Depot stre t re cently erected by Mr. J. B. Jones and they are now house-keeping for them selves. The ladies of his congregation desiring to show their kind wishes in some substantial way. met at the res idence of Mrs. L. C. Byars Thursday eDeriioo!’, each bringing a token— and such a lot of good thii gs there were. The dining-table piled high and baskets full besides. Tle-se were transferred, in part to a buggy driven by the only one lone man who hap- penod to he on hand. The twenty or thirty ladies then walked over to the Parsonage, happily surprising the be loved Pastor and an hour was spent in pleasant converse. A few well eiiosen words by the Rev. Kir express- his gratification at the unexpected testimonial of love and esteem in w! ich he and his family an held by his people. Just such little unexpec ted acts as tiiis—holding up the hands of one who often needs such heart- helps. is what makes life worth living in this mundane sphere. Fowler City Facts. (Oorn'siiondt-nce of T!ie Ledger.) Fowler City, May 24,—We had I another fine ruin yesterday anti crops are now in a flourishing condition. The out |*rop will soon be ready for harvesting and the yield promises well. Our farmers are thinning out their cotton. Your humble scribe was over to Hickory Grove last Saturday. Every body seems to be in a lively way over there. Harris Wylie was engaged in getting up a crowd to go to Rock i Hill to hear Sam Jones. John Foster and Monroe Childers were up to see us this morning. The Christian Endeavor prayer meeting met at R. J. Kirby’s yester day. The attendance was not as good as usual on account of the rain. Mrs. W. C. Kirby is quite proud of the possesion of one of the finest cows in the county. Tom and Gibbs Wilkins were in our town yesterday. Rambler. « • The B. Y. P. U. A. Convention. Last Sunday morning at 2 o'clock Squire I. G Sarratt was aroused from his peaceful slumbers by a during young couple who hud the grit to brave the elements and wrath of par ents and hie to the home of his honor who made them one. The contracting parties were Mr. J.G. Yinesett and Miss Belle Blanton, two of Cherokee's most popular young people. The Ledger joins their numerous friends in congratulating them upon their successful episode. May they live long and prosper. It was a Gretna Green affair. The Barron Meeting Next Sunday two weeks Dr. Bar ron will begin his meeting at the First Baptist Church. That it will be barren of results no one need ex- ; pyct. Dr. Barron is a lovely Chris tian gentleman. He will tenderly appeal to wayward humanity to turn from the paths of sin into the straight and narrow way and his appeals will not he in vain. He is a man of great power. One can almost imagine that he hears the Giver of ail good gifts tell the simple story of the Man of sorrows. Pastor Robertson desires that ail Christians, without regard to denom ination, join in tiiis meeting, and a cordial invitation to do so is extended to ail. How’s This!
