Meat is very cheap, that Flaw has been a ing. J. J. Gaffney sold the lirst hale of new cotton in this market last Thurs day. The decided change in the weather has had a stimulating effect on busi ness. The brick work on the City Hall has been finished, and the wood work is progressing rapidly. The front of It. A. Jones’ handsome new store has arrived and is being put up in place. It will look a regu lar daisy. Contractor L. baker has a number of new contracts on which he is fig uring and some interesting develop ments in the building line are antici pated. There is a revival in progress at the Second baptist church. The in terest is increasing every night. An invitation is extended to all to join in the work. Winthrop and Clemson cannot take all the girls and boys, so most of them just as well come along to the unsur passed schools at Gaffney, the pink of t he Piedmont. Mrs. Shelton Sparks delighted her Sunday school class lust Friday with a picnic at Cherokee Ford. The day was most delightfully spent, not an accident occurring to mar its pleas ure. The baptist church has granted Rev. b. P. Robertson a vacation of one month, beginning after the first Sunday in September. He will fill his pulpit on Sunday next at the usual hour. We learn that President Mack, of Cooper-Limestone Institute is receiv ing many applications for admittance' into the institute at the beginning of the next session. Some came from far off Texas. The Gaffney Land and Improve- unent Company has sold several tracts of land near the city recently. Mostly to parties of a character that 1 guarantee fine improvements aiUl | thorough farming. Tmk Lkdgkk is in receipt of the cut- j alogue of the Winthrop Normal and ! Industrial College for 1805*90,through the courtesy of President I). b. John son. It is elegantly printed and lib erally illustrated and, we presume, J is a good index to that institution. A series of meetings will be held at Timber Ridge school house in Union county, beginning the fifth Sunday in this month at 11 o’clock a. m., con ducted by Revs. C. F. Felment and P. G. Hopper. All denominations are expected to take part in the meeting. Wearing muzzles is a regular fad with the dogs in Gaffney now. They don’t look ornamental, nor do they appear very comfortable, hut the fad is on and the dogs arc sticking to it with a remarkable unanimity, but to do otherwise would be fatal, as has been proven in some instances. Contractor L. baker has nearly completed J. V..Surratt’s handsome residence and the painters are now brushing away on it. Mr. baker also has a large force of hands at work on W. (). Lipscomb’s new house on Hetty Hill. It will be a regular up-to-date homo building of magnificent proportions. He also has a force doing the wood work on R. A. Jones’ lino brick store. -• * Unclaimed Letters. List of letters remaining in office uncalled for to date : Dr. 8. Z. bryson. Miss Henrietta Edwards. J. M. Hicks. Miss Liza Hardin. Mrs. Anna McCurry. The concert last Monday night at the Gaffney Male and Female Semi nary by the ladies of the Methodist church was a pronounced success. While the attendance was not so large as it should have been that is accounted for in the fact that there was a counter attraction. The pro gram consisted of music and tab leaux, and those who attended were pronounced in their praises of the entertainment. Master Rob Laney’s singing elic ited applause and the little six-year- old was compelled to respond to an encore. Miss Ophelia Turner’s rendition of “I have sighed to rest me,” was one of the most pleasing numbers on the program and that charming young lady’s excellent voice was full of richness. Mrs. J. F. Laney sang “baby,” a new song just out tliis summer. Mrs. Laney made a decided hit. The rendition of ‘‘Life’s dream is o’er,” by Mr. Lysth and Mrs. Fay Gaffney was of a high order. They were effectively assisted by a violin, piano and cornet accompaniment by Miss Rosa Johnson, Prof. W. L. Johnson and Mr. M. G. Montgomery. Mrs. Fay Gaffney’s arrangement of the stage and her rendition of ‘‘Par adise Alley’ was a most catchy num ber. Miss Florence Griffith’s piano solo was of her usual excellent order and “Tarantelle” was seldom if ever better played than by her. The Second part consisted mainly ‘ of tableaux and were very pretty. First came ‘‘Tom Thumb’s wedding,” by the little folks. It caused much merriment and the young actors did their parts remarkably well. Those that followed were: “In sight of homo,” and a companion piece “Farewell to home,” “Parris giving tjie apple,” and “The fates.” Prof. Johnson explained the tableaux in their order which added greatly to the enjoyment of the evening. After the program hai been con cluded refreshments were served. The entertainment netted a hand some sum fur the cause and there have been requests that it be re peated. which may be done. ——»- — Bucklen’s Arnica Salve. Thom- on' store on East Fredrick street was entered by burglars and robbed of a quantity of goods and his books torn up. Only a week or two ago J. W. Bridges’ store was done the s..me way. Now these things arc becom ing too frequent. Our city authori ties should leave no stone unturned to put a stop to these outrages, and every citizen should at onct see that their shot guns are well loaded with buck-shot and themselves always on the lookout so they can shoot the scoundrels whenever they appear. -• «••%. - — The S.
