All Gaffney is aglow in an ticipation of the event, and are still working. One of Union county’s famous barbacue cooks has peen emr ployed and will bp on hand In time wi^h a porps of his trained assistants. The base hall ground lias been put jn fine shape and the bicycle truck is a daisy, and some of our cyclists think that they can go round quick— they will see if they can. The program for the 4th will be a parade of wheelmen and ladies which we trust will be rendered more at tractive by the presence of tho mili tary companies that have been in vited, and bicycle races followed by some novel amusements. There will bo speeches by promi nent men and dinner galore. Then'comes what promisest to be a baseball game that will be a game. The Gastonia nine will come over and tackle Gaffney’s nine on their native heather. When these nines meet you will see some artistic bull play ing. Gaffney knows her competitors. All riders are urged to wear uniforms and to have small United States Flags securely fixed on head of wheel. 2. All riders In the city are ex pected to assemble in front of Car- roll & Carpenters store at 8:15 Sat urday morning. 8. All gentlemen will pay 50 cents to Treasurer Webster at that time. 4. Parade will form in twos and move promptly at 8:30 a. m., passing along Robertson street, thence to the right up Limestone avenue forming single file at Wilkins’ store and tak ing left hand sidewalk at Bridge, thence up said walk turning to the left at R. C. Thomson’s and continu ing on sidewalk to Capt. Richard son’s, thence along the street and sidewalk to grounds. 5. On arriving at ground all rideis will pass around the track three times, then those who have not been drilled will fall out. At command “fall in” the drilling equad will take position designated by the instructor, after drill the squad will be dismissed. 7. PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS They Went in a Special Car to The Capital of the Confederacy. The special car for the Jake Car penter Camp U. C. V. arrived on time and was decorated as well as time permitted. Un Monday morning the Veterans began to arrive early and by 7 o’clock the agent had sold about forty “Un to Richmond’’ tickets. Commander H. P. Griffith had taken great interest in this trip and it was through his effort that the special oar was furnished. All the old sol diers were in tine humor and seemed to anticipate a good time. Norcum, of Greenville, was in the city Tuesday on business. Thos. 8. Sease, of Newberry, candi date for solicitor of this district, was in the city Tuesday. Mr. Sease is a most agreeable gentleman and is fast making friends. His announcement may be found in another column. Mr. Sease will be here Saturday and help celebrate. J. C. Clary, one of the numerous Ledgeritks of Cowpens, was in the city Tuesday and paid us a pleasant visit. J. 8. Littlejohn returned to the city Tuesday from a visit to his pa rents at Asbury. Judge J. J. McClure, of Chester, was hero Friday, looking after his business interests. Mr. and Mrs. J. I). Jones returned to the city last Friday after a visit of a week to Mrs. Jones’ father, Dr. J. F. Norman, at Gibbs, Union county. Miss Lucia Parks, a charming young lady of Harrisburg, N. O., is tho guest of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Parks. Miss E. Robbs, who has been teach ing at Clifton for some time, is the guest of Dr. and Mrs. W. C Hamrick. Alderman it. A. Jones returned from the county seat Wednesday, where he had been attending court. W. C. 8. Wood, of Grassy Pond, was among the planters in the city Saturday preparing to take the trip to Richmond. Howard Carlisle, of Spartanburg, was in the city last Thursday. Mrs. J. M. Alexander, of Ashe ville, is the guest of Mrs. W. 8. Lip scomb. J. J. Hemphill, of Chester, was in the city last Friday on business. Mrs. J.F. Laney.'of Monroe, N. C., accompanied by her two children, Master Robbie and baby Gladys, is stopping over with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. It. M. Gaffney, on Grenard street this week, on her way to Asheville, N. O., and Hot Springs. Her mother and little Daisy Wilkins will accompany heron her trip to the mountains, where they will spend a month or two during the warm weather. Miss Maggie Swindler, of Green wood, is visiting her uncle, L. C. Swindler, in Gaffney. Mrs. Peratine Bobo, of Cross Keys, bus been in the city several days on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. A. B. Gaines. Mrs. Bobo once lived in Gaffney and is now enjoying tho hearty salutations of tier many friends. Mrs. Jake Ross, of Blacksburg, was in the city Monday visiting rela tives. R. S. Lipscomb, who has been away from the city two or three weeks, is at home again and all are glad to see him. Capt. It. O’Neal, of Columbia, has been spending some days in Gaffney. At the Gaffney Male and Female Seminary Friday evening “Tony, the Convict,” will make his initial bow before a Gaffney audience. He will be in the hands of local talent and they will put forth an earnest effort to have him command favorable com ment. The plot is an interesting one and appeals strongly to human na ture.
