It Is Well With the Child.
Marie, the 7-yoar old daughter of
Mr. and Mr.-'. Frank Gaffney, died at
the home of her parents at Henrietta,
Tu sday, of pneumonia, after an ill
ness of ten days.
The many friends in thia city of
tho bereaved parents extend their
heartfelt sympathy.
Tho remains were laid to rest at
Shelby yesterday.

Miss Grace Whisonant, of Wilkins-
ville, spent a few days with her sis
ter, Mrs. J. P. White, last week,
while on her way home from All
Healing, where she has been attend
ing school.
Prof. Robert Sarratt has closed his
school at Pacolet and returned to the

Oscar Tindall, who has been en
gaged with the Gaffney Manufactur
ing Company for tho past three
years, has gone to Tucapau to place
looms and other machinery in the in
terest of a Northern firm. We are
all sorry to lose Oscar, for he was the
best section hand the Gaffney Manu
facturing Company Inis ever had, but
he is coming back on the 4th of
July.
Miss Ora Thomson ha's returned to
the city from Spartanburg, where she
has been attending college.
Miss Emilio Sharkey, of Union, has
been the guest of the Misses Hopper
at tho Limestone Inn for the past
two weeks.
J. L. Strain, of Etta Jane, accom
panied by his estimable wife, were in
the city Friday on a shopping tour.

Gaffney is moving forward. She
has taken tho Initial steps to great
advancement—to secure an outlet, by
way of rail, that has bet n closed to
her. Her citizens have been forced
to patronize one road, but there is
assurance of the Ohio River and
Charleston Railway Company extend
ing its line from Blacksburg, by way
of Cherokee, to this place.
A most enthusiastic and harmo
nious meeting was held last Friday
night in Woods’ Hull, and Mr. D. A.
Thomas was made chairman and Col.
Thos. B. Butler, secretary. Dr. J.
G. Black and Superintendant Tripp,
of the O. R. A C. It. R., were present
and explained what tho road would
do if Gaffney would lend a willing
hand. Dr. Black and Mayor Wood
showing them tho necessary amount
of money could ho raised by a volun
tary tax assessment, on all taxable
property in town, according to the
last tax return. That is 10 per centum
of all taxable property.
To be plainer, a tax-payer who pays
taxes on $100.00 worth of property
wou'd he asked—not required—to
contribute $i.U0 to building a road
bed from Gaffney to Cherokee Ford;
and every man asked to pay at the
same ratio, according to his property.
Tho audience readily saw that ibis
was no tux, nud a splendid and cheap
way of securing 4 pqlroad of incalcu
lable benefit tq the ti>\yu and. when
paid fqr, no taij is qu the tax-payers,
and (he road is beru to stay.

The house was unanimous in favor
of tho proposition, and an executive
committee, composed of the following
gent lemen were elected to secure sub
scriptions. make all necessary con
tracts and have the road bed graded :

Contractor L. Baker has com
menced the work on Mrs. Sallie Lip
scomb’s house. It bids fair to be a
handsome dwelling of fourteen rooms.
Alderman R. A. Jones has let tho
contract for a magnificent two-story
store and office building to take the
place of the one now occupied by J.
G. Galloway A Son. The brick and
lumber have already been purchased
and work will be commenced just as
soon as Messrs. Galloway A Son move
into their new store.

Ravensa, S. C., June 15.—One of
our villagers went to Pacolet Mills to
see his girl—ho says on business.
On his return he fourd the creek
swollen, a big rain having fallen, and
no foot-log. He hired an old colored
man to bear him over on his back,
but his bigness overbalanced Uncle
Burt, who staggered and let him
down headforemost into the raging
billows. He argues now against im
mersions and night meetings, and
says Supervisor Leonard ought to
have good foot-logs over every public
unbridged stream.

Shelby has challenged the Gaffney
boys for a game of ball and it has

A Protracted Meeting.
A protracted meeting was begun
at the Methodist church last night.
It is to continue several days, at
least until Sunday. The public is

We are having good rains and crops
are very line so far. Fruit is not
much in t his community.
Children’s day was a grand success
at Corinth last Sunday. All of the
recitations were real good and wc
think all had dinner, for there was
plenty for all. Mr. Foster was up
with liis choir and gave us some good
singing. There was a large congre
gation and we hope all enjoyed the

O. N. Clary lias been very sick, 6

W. E, Lipscomb is home and says

Amos Clary came home last Satur
day.
J. B. Carter is bad on hawks. He
has killed 10 hawks in the last fen
months. He went out last Saturday
and was gone about one hour and
came back with a crow, a hawk and
a squirrel. If all of the fanners was
to kill as many hawks as he does we
could raise chickens.
W. M. Crawford’s baby is very
sick.
Some of our farmers are speaking
of laying by corn this week.

I have to report two cases of sick
ness this week. David Ceazar has
catarrhal fever and Monroe Mize is
very ill. Both have good physicians
and are thought to be better.
