THE WEEKLY LEDGER: GAFFNEY, S. 0., APRIL 23, 1800. Notice of Election. In obedience to a petition of a ma jority of the freeholders of Gaffney City, ns will be seen by said petition and the city tax hook, praying the Town Council to order an election for the purpose of authorizing the Town Council to issue twelve thousand dol lars in bonds, running for the period of ten years as authorized by law, that is to say, ten thousand dollars in si.id bonds for the purpose of com pleting the town hall and furnishing and lighting same, and two thousand dollars in said bonds for the purpose of extending and enlarging the elec tric light plant. Notice is hereby given that on the 5th day of May, 1890, at the law office of Schumpert, butler and Mc Gowan, said election will be held ac cording to the rules governing in town elections. Those qualified to vote in said election, who are in favor of is suing said bonds shall vote a ticket with “Yes” plain!)'written or printed thereon and those who oppose said bond issue shall vote a ticket with the word “No” plainly written or printed thereon, and 1). We regret to hear that the Rev. .1. G. Carter is quite sick at his home in the city. Commissioner Jolly has received a car loud of terra cotta piping which he is using on the public road near here. We trust that our city fathers v.ili take such action as will protect what few song birds remain with us. Abo their offsprings which arc cruelly de stroyed every year. Jno. Geddes, our champion gard- ner, discovered ripe strawberries in his garden last Saturday, April 1>. This is early, but then John is a pusher and nothing escapes him. A great crowd went over to Shelby Sunday to hear the Rev. Clarence Dixon, of Brooklyn. They returned Sunday night and all were profuse lit their praises of tiic elegant sermons delivered by that eminent minister. Mr. I). C. Bess and Miss Eva Black, both of Lincoln county, N.C., were married by W. (). Lipscomb., N. T., Monday afternoon at Mr. Lipscomb’s residence on Frederick street. It was a Gretna Green affair. (L W. Bvars and wife were out to Joe Coyle’s home on Cherokee creek Monday. Mr. Byars says Joe lias a hen with the most remarkable brood of chicks lie ever saw. There were forty-one in the lot which claimed her protecting care. There will be preaching at the Presbyterian church next Sabbth morning at II o’clock and in the evening at <i p. in. by the pastor. Rev. C. E. Robertson. Prayer meet ing every Tuesday evening at 8 j). m. The people arc eordialy in vited. Dr. C. C. Brown will give a lecture iti Wood’s Hall on Friday night, May 1st, at 8:30 p. in. His subject will be: “Courtshio and marriagb.” Dr. Brown is exceedingly witty and all who can should hear itim. He comes here under the auspecis of the ladies ciety of the Baptist church. As Section Master Sanders and Lis men were coming in from down the road Thursday evening from their days work the hand car collided with a dog, killing him. The car was thrown from the track and all on board thrown c!T. Jim Flack, one of the colored workmen, was severely hurt by the car falling on him. The Seminary boys waxed it on to the town boys in a game of hall on the school grounds last Friday. The playing of both teams was loose and the errors were too numerous to men tion. But with a little more prac tice we hope to sec both teams put up a good game before long. They are to cross bats again next Friday. Dan Anthony has the champion hens of this section. They are two of the White Brahum variety ten months old and they have lain sixty- three eggs and there is no appear ance of a desire on their part to go to setting. The eggs are mammoth in size, weighing four ounces each. .Mr. Anthony got his stock from Dr. Anthony of Spartanburg, but has greatly improved the variety. Father Budd, of Charleston, lec tured and preached in Wood’s Hall Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock. Father Budd is one of the foremost Catholic priests of the South and his visit to Gaffney was highly appreciated, a large audience being present to hear him. Father Budd will remain in the city a couple of weeks and while here will he the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. and Mr. and Mrs. \Y. W. Gallo way. His ledure Sunday afternoon has been the frequent cause of much favorable comment. The localizer of Thk Lkdock is in Charleston this week attending the meeting of the South Carolina Press Association ami the get up of this week’s paper is largely due to the en ergetic young men of the office who always assist him. We feel proud of our bright young men and although they are now laboring on an obscure country weekly we predict that it is only a stepping stone to a more prominent and magnificent position in tlie field of Journalism. There tire not many weekly papers that could leave their business in the hands of their help for so long a pe riod, but our boys are better than the majority of boys. — « ■«•*- . Dime Exercise. The Grim Reaper is No Respecter of Persons. Death has made his visits with un usual rapidity in the homes of our citizens the past week, taking to 1 heir eternal home both young and old, h aving the inipressof their lives upon the sands of 1 imc. Warren Dugald, the bright little s ui of Mr. and Mrs. John Edwards, died last Thursday morning of meas les. The little fellow had been sick for eight or ten weeks and suffered intensely and all that loving, tender hands could do availed nothing. The Master had called and his little soul answered the summons. Mr. S. S. Williams died at the home of his son, B. F. Williams, No. 5. of the mill houses, last Friday morning at 12:30. in his seventy-sixth year. Mr. Williams was a native of Virginia but hud been living in this state for a number of years. He was of a quiet, retiring disposition and bore the good will and respect of all who knew him. He had been a member of the Bap tist church for fifty one years. The remains were interred at Limestone Cemetery Friday afternoon. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. W. Walker, of the Second Baptist church in the presence of a large concourse of friends. Mr*. Carrie McKown, wife of Dr. Forest McKown, of Cherokee, died Thursday morning after a short ill ness. .Mrs. McKown was a sister of J. <b and Joint Spencer, of this city, and had been married less titan two year.;. An infant survives to bring joy and comfort to the bereaved hus band and kinspeople. The remains were interred Saturday at Corinth graveyard, the Rev. B. !*. Robertson, of this city, conducting the funeral services. - • -*«»- Up to Date. H. i>. Wheat, of the Gaffney Mfg. <’o.. is nothing if not progressive. The latest improvement is a hand some edition of four rooms to their magnificent office. One room is for the exclusive t:s'* of t he efficient type writer. M'-s Emma Sams, another for Co!. Yt'ardlaw, a third for a cloak and hat room and the fourth for Mr. Wheat 's private office. Each room is to be appropriately equipped and will he a palace of its kind. The stags, Billy Webster and Jack Holland, will continue to occuny the front room. The Pupil’s Recital Friday Night Was a Success. Professors Mack and Griffith have j just grounds to be proud of the mag nificent reception accorded the pupil* . recital nl CoopcT-l.ime.ston© Friday night. The spacious hall was well! Mis.- Carroll’s inging was very pretty and she received generous applause. Miss More nee Griffith s rendition of Pas more's "Tarrnntefle” was till* best piano solo of the evening. Miss Lip scomb S recitation was good, as were a.so .Misses Kendrick, Turner and Richardson, but the cutest number on the program was rendered by little Miss Bird Crawley. The piano solos of Misses Eva Ross. Matilda Croxton, Marie Turner, Anr.ie Martin and Meta iyler were well received, as was ab-o t be singing of Miss Lit a Manville, while Master (). P. C., in council xseLT.bk'd and by authority of the same, tiiat section 2 of special onli- nance relative to bicycles be changed 1 so as to read: Tiiat any person or persons riding a bicycle cn any sidewalk or tide- walks of any street or streets of the town, other than are prescribed or limbed in the proceeding Sec. No. 1, shall, cither at night or in daytime, while approaching any pedestrian thereon, i iiln r in front or in rear, ring tl. • alarm bell when not less than thirty feet of the pedestrian, and shall regulate the speed of the machine while passing to move but, little* fas ter tlif,n a pedestrian in an ordinary wa.ig and in case the pedestrian does not give the right of way the rider must dismount rather than como'in collision with the pedestrian, and in all eases where possible the bicycle rider must keep to the outer edge of the sidewalk. And furthermore, each rider shall be required, in addition to his or her alarm bell, to have a break and ;t lamp lighted and so arranged on the bicycle us to be conspicious af ter twilight, and whenever approach ing r. corner where the view of the cross street or alley is obstructed the rider shall slow down to a safe gait an l have the machine under perfect and immediate control and give warn ing by ringing the bell within not less than thirty feet of said corner, both in daytime and at night, and the bi- cyc c rider shall be held responsible for any damage to pedestrians caused by any neglect of proper caution on his or her part in addition to the pen alty fixed in See. 3. of this ordinance.
