Some of the Northern; press have been gloating over the transient dis appointment caused from the failure to dock the Indiana at the appointed hour. All sorts of rumors were floating in the air, all detrimen tal to the largest dry dock on the Atlantic coast and the magnificent harbor of Port Royal. Jealously is a powerful lever; it would move moun tains. But in this case there was no prop for their fulcrum, and the lever was of no avail. The Indiana has been docked to the satisfaction of all who would let honor rest where honor belongs. The dry dock was all that was claimed for it. The beautiful har bor is as spacious and us deep as when the first sail was furled on her peaceful waters. The bar across her open mouth is open to ships of the deepest draft, that find readiest ac cess even at ordinary tides. No dredges have even been needed to clear her open channel; no jetties have ever been thought of to deepen it as none were needed. Nature, in the prodigality of her gifts left nothing more to he asked for. I am here, come and use me to your own advantage is her constant invitation. Some day it will be accepted, and a city of royal proportions will arise to correspond with her harbor. Charleston has acted very nicely. She gives due praise to her sister port and acknowledges without blushing the superiority of Caroli na’s most southern harbor. WARS AND RUMORS OR WARS. But a few years ago and the whole world was at peace. Alas what a change has come o’er the spirit of our dreams! Now, each nation that has aspirations is arming herself for defensive or offensive operations. England, not satisfied with her magnificent Navy, the finest the world has ever seen, is adding bat tle ship to battle ship and other wise making more efficient her already well-organized forces. CJer- many, Franco and Russia are keep ing pace, as best they can, with their more formidable rival, but England maintains her vantage ground given through her insular position and her diplomacy. Italy and Spain have seen their palmiest Jdays, but they, too, are putting forth utmost effort to keep in lino with the inarch of events. The day may yet bo distant when these floating fortresses, armed, armored and doubly manned shall be dravn up in buttle array and the dogs of war unloosed, hut it does not look so at present. So destructive are the weapons of modern warfare that their very efficiency makes us dread the hour when the testing time draws near that will try men’s souls as well. Woe betide that battleship or that Monitor that comes out sec ond best In the struggle; the bottom of the sou is apt to he its eternal resting place: Its guns spiked for ever. A NEEDED REFORM. The following lines, taken from an exchange, speak for themselves: “A number of young women of Washington have organized the Equal Standard Purity Club. Their object is to establish u single code of morals, equally binding upon men and women, and to protect their members from the visits of men of impure lives. A method of ascer taining the private lives of young men has been devised. Every young man whose private life is found to he im- ,pure will ho be blacklisted. This black list will he In the hands of the executive committee, the members will he informed, and they are pledged never to receive the atten tion of persons on the black list.” They appeared without comment and will, perhaps, he flead by few and will he heeded by fewer still. It is a move in the right direction, and should receive the hearty com mendation and co-operation of all who love morality and the true de velopment of all that is best in man. Man is largely what woman makes him. She has in her power to lead him on to virtue and a life of ever widening influence for good, or she can lead him down and down to where the piteous cry is unavailing. If women generally would raise the standard of admission to their pres ence and would strenuously adhere to it, there would be a hearty re sponse from the opposite sex. The key of the situation is in her hands. 5 - . THE WEATHER BUREAU. “Largo oaks from little acorns grow.” Truly the weather bureau service of the U. S. has been a growth that has been developed into a science- Few know the magnitude, the accu racy and importance of the work that has grown up at our very doors. Si lently, day and night, earth, air and water are scanned and made to give up their secrets for the service of man. The present and the future are judged of by the past; a path is found for the winds, a resting place for the snow; nature’s pulse is felt and the temperature of her body recorded, all that man might be safe and continue his ceaseless round of duties with the least possible friction. Truly man is a co-worker with the God of the universe. He desires to he inquired of, and opens his secrets only to those who will ask, seek, knock; but unto such he comes with unbounded liberality. The weather bureau is growing in efficiency and in the confidence of the people whose interest it serves. HARRISON AGAIN. Benjamin Harrison is looming up again a? the most available man that tjie Republican party can put for ward as;President. When asked if he .vould serve if the party called him again to he its standard bearer lie significantly remarked: “There was a difference between being drafted and a volunteer.” \Ye be lieve Ben to he a shrewd’politician who can see into the inside of thing* and whose sword can pierce even to the joints of the armor. McKinley may yet find that he has a worthy competitor in the former occupant of the White House. The lesser lights are waning us these luminaries rise above the po litical horizon. Be Strong, Be Manly. 1 have not been snuffing the east wind nor feeding on thistles, hut Oh how chill is the wind mingled with snow tiiis morning. As I toiled with | sad heart, troubling over my failure 1 and grapling for new courage, it seemed that my burden was too great for mo. Then I listened and it seemed that I heard a multitude of voices in sorrowing and pitiful tones crying. It might not have been so. As I looked upsn the great throng that surrounded me my heart sank in despair. Such a surrounding I had never seen before. Such a variety of humanity had never bewailed my sympathy before. The innocent, helpless infant unattended left to helplessness. The multitude of or phan children seemed innumerable, shivering and crying for bread and all homeless. The throng of young women clothed in shame only, dark ened the sun. Young men in great numbers, wearing masks to hide their faces, all reeking in blood, gasping too late, too late ! I turned and saw many fathers of different age and statues with low muttering and an occasional glance backwards and pointing in the distance at beautiful farms and cattle and fine mansions. Their eyes were red with madness as their burning appetite forced the tears down their cheek as some would cast aside an empty flask with the low declaration of “that’s the last.” I heard the crash under foot. As I looked I saw the way strewn with ernptr bottles. As the poor chained victims gazed at mo I asked from whence came that pitiful pleading. The reply was, “In yon prison.” I looked at the long row of gallowses and electric chairs. A crowd came into view and I heard the sad cry of contrition pouring fourth from broken hearted mothers, wives and widows. I closed my eyes and stopped my ears, it being more than I could hare. 1 was aroused by the giant Alcohol with the command to move on with his obediant slaves. I looked up and the giant with his uplifted hand was pouring forth a river of flame that was sweeping on a seething and writhing mass of humanity to a gulf of destruction. Then a sober thought rushed into my mind and now courage came as the God of nature said look up. I looued up and it had stopped snowing and the sun shone out and the wind roared ai a great teacher of providence, “Be strong, he manly.” Gleaner. A Butcher’s Experience. Mr. J. \V. Ravinells Rouleau. [Correspondence of Thk Ledumi Ravinells, March 30.—The farm ers in this community are very busy now at work on their farms. Some of us poor farmers cannot see the condition that we are getting in. If we could see far enough ahead to re alize the fact and practice what we preach I know the country would be in a much better condition than it is today. We farmers have lay around and done nothing, you might say, all winter while wc should have been raking leaves, digging up the top of the ground in our forests and haul ing it in, or else go where the soil has been washed in the low places and haul this dirt out to mix with what little compost we do hare in order to make it hold ont or go over the land which we are going to culti vate. Instead of doing this we arc going to the merchant and buying guano and promising so much cotton or so much money in the fall to pay for it, at the same time not knowing whether we will make enough to pay the rent, that is if wo are fortunate or unfortunate enough to lie renter. Besides this we do not cultivate th • crop that is more valuable to its. We go and put in about twenty seres of cotton and five acres in corn foe one horse to plow. Now in the place of this we should put ten in corn, ten or twelve in wheat and outs, an acre or so in rye and the remainder of the twenty-five acres in peas or some other leguminous crop that would help to fertilize the land.
