As a last resort, I was induced to try Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, and, after tak ing a number of bottles, the sore began to disappear and my general health improve. I persisted in this treatment, until the sore was en tirely healed. Since then, I use Ayer’s Sarsaparilla occasionally as a tonic and blood-purifier, and, in deed, it seems as though I could not keep house without it.”—Mrs. S. A. Fields, Bloomfield, la. An Uneventful Election-—Very Few Drunks, no Insulting and Abu sive Epithets Used— The Day’s Events. Tuesday, March the 24th was elec tion day. The suspense of several weeks is finally over and now let pro gressive Gaffney, with her progres sive business men, led by a progres sive mayor and a progressive council a<rain settle down to business and push on to her goal. The day opened with a slight fall of snow hut later the sun came out and made the weather very pleasant. There was no wrangling at the polls, no"pulling and shoving and miscon duct to secure a vote. Everything was conducted in a nineteenth cen tury civilization manner. There was but few drinking men and they were, without exceplion, in a jovial mood. The voting began at S) o’clock and by 12 o’clock 1.87 votes had been cast. After that the voting was light so that when the polls were closed at 8 o’clock a total of 2.7.) votes had been cast. The following is a tubu lated report of the managers: FOR IN''IT SHAN'T. A. X. Wood 204 J. V. Sarratt 5.) I 011 WAUDLN. J. F. Garrett B>7 J. R. Tollcson 93 A. X. Wood and J. F. Garrett are therefore duly elected and until the first Tuesday in March, 1898, the town council of the city of Gaffney will stand as follows : Intendant—A. X. Wood. Wardens—J. A. Carroll, It. A. Jones, L. Baker and J. F. Garrett. This is a progressive hoard, and we believe it can ho said, comes as near representing the whole interests of the city as any that could he se lected. tiik vicTons. Of the victors in Tuesday’s contest hut little can he added to that which has already been said. Mr. Wood has served the city several times as mayor. He is a hanker, therefore a man of ample means, a safe financier and is perhaps better known outside the city than any other citizen. He is truly conservative in all things, stands well with the State adminis tration and lias a large influence with the railroads and other corpora tion. lie is liberal in his views and will conduct the affairs of the city in a strictly economical manner. When tiny new enterprise is to be launched that requires capital and influence you will generally find Adolphus X. Wood at or close to the lead. J)r. J. F. Garrett is a dentist. IJe enjoys a remunerative practice. He is at the head of tlio local building and loan association. He can also always he found with the progressive men as lie is imbued with the pro gressive spirit. THE VANqriSIIKI). Mr. J. V. Surratt is a large and prosperous merchant at the head of the firm of Sarratt it Sims. He is a genial spirit and enjoys a large circle of friends. Ho conducts business on a safe basis, and, had ho been elected, 1 tho interests of the city could not have suffered in the least degree. He loses no prestage or friends for being vanquished as he is a gentleman whom defeat could not crush. Mr. J. It. Tollcson is also a mer chant, conducting, as ho does, one of the largest and best equipped general merchandise establishments in the city. He enjoys tho reputation of being ono of our best and most con scientious business men. A gentle man once remarked to The Eeduku that “J. R. Tollcson could have been immensely wealthy if tie had desired to conduct anything but a straight forward business, hut he is too con scientious to do anything wrong.” This is the record of the men who were in the field, so it was impossible for a mistake to be made. Xow that its all over let animosi ties resulting from the contest of three weeks ago be laid aside and all pull for the upbuilding of Gaffney. —— -* - Unclaimed Letters. C., it was ascer tained that more titan $100,000 of the stock had been subscribed for and it was decided to commence work at once on the erection of the plant. Gaffney capital is largely represented in this enterprise and, us tho secre tary and treasurer both live here, it is more than likely that the offices of the company will be located in this, city. The Ledcjeu wishes the new mill much success. The stockholders met at Boiling Springs Academy at tho time ap pointed and after considerable “sift ing” of doubtful stockholders and “doubling-up” of the tried and true the desired amount of $100,000 was raised (or very nearly so) and the oflicers elected declared the mill a certainty and as soon the surveyors can he gotten upon the ground con tracts will bo let out and work will begin. It being decided that tho new-born urchin could not bo called “Durham,” there being an overgrown urchin in the State by that name, a short discussion took place between seueral members of the family as to what the little blue-eyed girl should be called. The father thinking it to he a boy suggested the name “Jolly,” hut as there were several .Jollys thereabouts and the crowd had been “jolly” all the while and as the father always yields to the dignity, good judgement and modesty of the mother the name “Irene” suggested by the secretary, Col. J. G. Wardlaw, was accepted, so the pliico shall he forever known in the future as Irene Mills, X. (’. As there is no post-office there as yet communications to tho Irene Manu facturing Company for the present will he received at Gaffney, S. C. The mill is named after the charm ing little daughter of the treasurer and general manager, Hiram 1). Wheat. The Gaffney men are noted for their qualifications in regard to finance and business. The Irene Mills is no more a prob ability hut a reality. She has men at the helm who constitute the hone and sinew of the central union of the two Carolinus. A better corps of mill buildi-rs than that of our officers, Messrs. Wheat, Carroll. Wardlaw and Cash, can not be found in this conn- fry. and from the fact that they arc all experienced mill men the Irene Mills will without a doubt he a marked success. The hoard of Direc tors constitute the above named gen tlemen and also Messrs. David Ream. Henry Jenkins and L A. Gettcs. Tho cite of the new mill is a beau tiful one, it being the favorite resori for fishing parties. Broad River is destined to become the father of cot ton mills and in a few years the low munneringS of all her shoals within five miles of Irene will blend with the gentle humming of thousands of cotton mill spindles. A Newspaper Helps. The effort of any newspaper to build up a town is practically nulli fied unless it is hacked up by the business men. A stranger turns from the news columns of a paper to its advertising pages, and if he fails to find there the business cards of the merchants and professional firms, he comes to the conclusion that the publisher is not appreciated, in which case it is a good place for him to keep clear of. Xo town ever grew without tho active assistance of its newspaper. Xor can papers grow and build up their localities without the assistance of the town. Busi ness men should realize this and re member in giving support to the newspapers they are not only build ing up their own business, but help ing to support that which is steadily working for the growth of tho whole town. —Franklin Transcript. GA. » AT THE LITERARY CLUB. A Wintry Evcmrg Most Delightfully Spent. Notwithstanding the wintry weath er last Friday night a good sized crowd greeted 1’rof. F. C. Woodward at the rooms of the Literary Club and spent a delightful evening. I lie Club was fortunate in securing the services of Prof. Woodward and it shows that the literary people are enterprising and enthusiastic. Prof. Woodward is noted for his eloquent and learned lectures. Fri day night he was in his usual happy mood and treated his hearers to one of his best and most interesting talks. His subject, “Reading, the manner and the matter selected” was one in which every one present was interested. Prof. \\ oodwanl was introduced by President Wardlaw, of the Literary Club, and for an nour ho delighted and interested his audience, telling them of the good value of good read ing and how to obtain the best results from a course of good reading. Prof. Woodward possesses a happy style and is well fitted to deal with a subject of this kind, being himself an extensive reader and a learned man. It is be hoped the club will seenre him for another lecture at an early date. Prof. Woodward is professor of English at the .South Carolina Uni versity at Columbia. -• * - - - —- “Success is the reward of merit” not of assumption.
