The Fatal Fight of Two Sporty Gentle men of Color. Sixer eight pistol shots rang out on the still night air, followed by the heart-rending shrieks of an aged mother, the agonizing cry of a wife and the pierced screams of frightened children, and then came the news another tragedy had been enacted. Will Ardry and Will Kenan live in a two room shack across the branch in the caster section of the city. Tuesday night Ardry and a ne gro named Ed Edwards were playing Pacolet Echoes. [( orrcspondcncc of Tub Lkimikii.] Pacolkt, March 1(5.—Since my last notes I have traveled hundreds of miles, seen many tilings of inter est which would take too much space in your paper to mention. In the city of Columbia I spent a day in looking on the busy workers in the State legislature. ! learned much that I never knew before, and as I never expect to be sent there and having not the least desire to be I did not write down any notes. I met many friends among them which made my visit pleasant. In Spartan burg I found a busy, moving mass of men. Everybody seemed to have something to do and were busy doing it. A Hying trip to the growing city of (ialTney impressed me with the fact titan in proportion to her popu lation she leads in the race “to get there.” It was a real treat to me to meet the gentle, pious, hard-working pastor of the Methodist church at that place. He is a true and tried servant of the church and if this will not be the best year of Methodism in (IalTney that it has had in the past it will not be the fault of the Rev. .1. J). Crout. Let the Methodist make a note of this. ! found the force in The L::ik;i:k office the same clever, smiling and obliging men that they were in the beginning of The Le.d- i.ek's existence, i can say with all sincerity that The Lmdoek job office turns out as neat jolts as any office I have ever patronized and the prices are not objectionable. I always find it a real pleasure to visit your city and would if I bad time mention the many courtesies 1 received at the hands of many with whom 1 came in contact when i was in the city. I can hut admire that tall smoke stack over at 1 lie (iaffney Manufact uring Company and also flic wonder ful improvements going on by that company. But 1 looked in vain for a church building with towering spire poiiiting upwards to the giver of all good. What a blessing it would be if the company would build a house of worship for those hundreds of human beings under their control to worship God in every Sabbath. This is not a presumption hut a plea. The Methodist parsonage at I’acolet Mills is rapidly approaching comple tion and wlit n it is finished it will he one of the best preacher's home in the Spartanburg district. It has seven rooms and will he furnished in modern style. The new Methodist church will be beyun in a short time and will he built by the I’ncolet Man ufacturing Company and will be a g'TTt when fin isle d. The Baptist pastor here is not only a gardet..ng. in' our city. The churches here are working in sweetest harmony. Why can’t it he so everywhere. ! send your readers Good Society. p'orresponden Tut; Lkdukk.I M ai d, S. C., March 17.—Good so ciety can no more exist in a commu nity without government in some form or other than man can exist in this world without the help of God. Boliteness, good manners and good character lubricatcu the wheels of society and makes the people both young and old rejoice. But when the wolf comes dressed in sheep’s cloth ing and tries to blind the people with his irony he brings shame, not only on himself but on all those whom he associates with. There are some men in this com munity who are mistreating their wives and little> children for some i abominable women near Gaffney on the public highway. I think the ! grand-jury should look moore closely i after this matter. Do your duty, let : it front or please, and then we will have better society. Rrof. John R. Mack, president of the Cooper-Limestone Institute, and Rev. W. T. Thompson, of Gaffney, were in this section last week looking up applicants for scholarship to the institute. President Mack also pur chased some chickens for the girls. Mrs. R. Ann Watters, of Midway, carried Iter daughter, Mrs. Sallie Da vis, to her home at Henrietta, X. C. ; Saturday. John Byars, of Cowpcns. was in | tltis community Sunday. Twenty-five loads of wood were car- | ried to Gaffney Saturday from Thick- etv or near there. The factory and lime kiln has been a great help to the ' landlords of the mountain. I am glad to report that sickness no longer prevails in our community, and the people are all up and at their work. The infant of Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Clary is improving. Some of the young men above Maud fail to keep Sunday holy. They are sowing their wild oats among the thorns and thistles. They don't seem to realize that the reaping days are coming in the near future—too much spirits of course. Wheat looks well where it is well fertilized in this community. The fruit trees are putting forth t heir gorgeous flowers. <)ld Mr. Dock Jolly, a very good prophet, predicts a good fruit year. Rev. June Ellis preached at Cen- terview Sunday. Joe Watkins, of Gaffney, spent last Wednesday night tit Mrs. Emily Lem mons'. He said that it did him good to tret out in the country among Ids old friends to eat ham and hominy. One dark evening 1 was returning homo from a call on one of nnr English neighbors in Taiyuenfu. When not far from our compound, tho road crossed an open space of several acres in extent. As I was finding my way along by tho rather dim light of a (’hineso lantern I nearly stumbled over the body of a man who had fallen by tho way. My lirst impulse was to take hold of tho person and ascertain if help was needed, but for some reason I did not, but hurried homo to get aid. Mr. X. was still with us and on hearing my statement said : “Yes, I know. The man is dead, and it is fortunate that you did not attempt to touch tho body. Should we now try to remove it or even to go to it we should no doubt be seen and at once suspicion would attach itself to us, and none could tell tho consequences. Wo might cause a riot before morning. ” It should bo said that this suspicion would not have been becaus’c we were foreigners, for a native under similar circumstances would likewise have run the risk of being charged with tho mur der. The good Samaritan would have fared har(lly in China, or most likely would have been suspected of doing the kind deed for some ultimate gain, while the priest and the Levito would have been accounted not hard hearted, hut prudent.—Professor C. M. (Jady in Cen tury. Huxlry’s \Vil>. When the Rattlesnako was in Sydney harbor, tho officers were invited to a ball, and young Huxley among tho number. There for the first time ho met his future wife, whose parents re sided at Sydney. A few days after they were engaged, and tho ship sailed for tho Tower straits to complete the survey 1 of the north coast of Australia, all com munication being cut off for months at a time, and then she returned direct to England. After that brief acquaintance (not, I believe, longer than a fortnight) it was seven years before tho lovers saw one another. At tho end of this time, on Huxley’s appointment to the School of Mines, ho was in a position to claim his bride and welcome her to their first homo in St. John's Wood. He often used to say that to engage tho affections of a young girl under these eircum- slauces, knowing that lie would have to leave her fur an in/L’ttnito time, and with only the reiimtost prospect of ever marrying, was au act most strongly to be reprobated, and lie often held it out ** u warning to his children never to do anything of tho kind. «nd yet they all married young and ail happily. - Huxley’s love at first sight and cou- »>taiicy during those seven long years of separation were richly rewarded, for it is impossible to imagine a pair moro thoroughly suited. — North American Review.
