William Manning, the ieige lord of Mary Manning, became enamored of a colored damsel named Ida Boyd, whom Mary had “taken in to help her do washing.” Wade . who lived in the other end of the Manning mansion, became aware cf the fact by peeping through a crack, and in formed Mary, who didn’t do a thing but raise a rumpus. William wanted to know the informer, and when told who he was proceeded to go after him with his gun. Shots were exchanged hut no one was hurt. William then left the premises. This happened Thursday night last. Another col ored gent by the name of William Ross went to the Manning home that night and stayed all night, in order “to protect de ladies.” On Friday morning, as he started to go away, William Manning met him and emptied the contents of a gun into Ross’ bowels. Ross will probably die. Manning has escaped. Aunt Mary was heard to say Mon day night that she wished Ross would die and that they would catch Manning and hang him and then she’d swears’ e’d never marry another nigger as long as she lived. This is her second venture in the matrimonial line and both have been rather unhappy for her. In His New Home. In a private letter to a friend in the city the Rev. G. M. Boyd, late pastor of the Methodist church, says: I have only time to say we are in our new home and find our surround ings quiet pleasant. Everyday linings us fresh tokens of appreciation by these kind people. I filled my ap- pointments yesterday, and was greeted by good congregations at both churches. Measles, mumps and whooping cough are holding sway in our town, but the physicians are equal to the emergencies. The town generally anticipates a good Christmas. I find the town under perfect con trol by the Christian gentlemen who hold the reins. The sample copies of the late edi tion of The Ledukk came duly to hand and will be judiciously dis tributed. Let me congratulate you on that edition. It is a “daisy.” Mrs. Boyd has been critically ill since we came. It was a complete breakdown from our work in getting ready for our move. Dr. Jefferies thinks she has passed the crisis and will be herself soon. I leave for Newberry I fxt Thurs day to visit my father, and will he absent for a week or more. Not the Dispensary Brand. A western paper tells of a fellow who, every time he gets on a spree, insists on paying a year’s subscrip tion to his town paper. He lias al ready paid to January 1, 1947. An effort should be made to ascertain that brand of whiskey the fellow is using that it may be more generally put on the market. * <*•«- • The wife of Mr. D. Robinson, a prominent lumberman of Hartwick, N. Y., was sick with rheumatism for five months. In spraklngof It, Mi. Robinson says “Chamberlain’s Bain Balm is the only tiling that gave her any rest from pain. For the relief of pain it cannot be beat,” Many very bad cases of rheumatism have been cured by it.
