Why was the constitutional con- veention called? The answer comes readily—to regulate the suffrage Subjects of minor importance, how ever, have been disposed of. orwillb< in abeyance until this is disposed of. The committee has made its report the leaders, for and against, ar> marshalling their forces for the stnig gle which is inevitable. Hardly was the committee’s re port in possession of the convention, when cx-Congrcssmnn, Thomas Mil ler, (eo'orod.) proposed a sul. litnle. which would give a showing to 1 s r uv. ,vs was to l/t 1 i X j ; e»*' e t. tie.' silb-l it ule w as . witieU 1 . a!., o! It is d drustful of the ability of those who nr * afterwards to fi’l our legisla tive hulls, and is giving us a constitu tion braced here and there so that there is little or no elasticity. Men change, and they change the face of the world, and, this is in •hedienco to the Divine command. Conditions are not now what they were ten years ago, and ten years hence the machinery provided for our government will be out of adjustment, and we will be unable to make the correction. The child has some rights as well as the parent. That is a poor parent who looks after his own present in terest and regards not the growing interest of the child. NO PLACE LIKE HOME. So says a young lady who left home and returned to Gaffney on a visit. ‘‘I like the Gaffney people very much and would like to live among them,” has been said more than once. Gaffney is a pleasant :>Iaee in which to live. Those who have been reared amid its pleasant -urroundings delight to turn their faces homeward when business or pleasure will permit. The fee ing is i natural one and is worthy of culti vation. Would that there were more homes in Gaffney, and more I wing hearts to appreciate the attractions, the associations, the loving minstru- tions that grow up in every happy home, and make it a happy meeting place. From every such home, as from so many suns, rays of light and heat are continually being given out to cheer and warm a cold and barren world into active co-operation. Every happy home is a monument to God’s love, more enduring than brass or •mirble shaped by art or man’s de vice. Sarratt Scrougers. [Correspondence of Tiik Ledoer. I ! The speakers. while acknowledging the ability of the white race to lead, threw down the gauntlet to make the ability to vote turn either on the property or the educational qualification, or on both. The gauntlet will not be taken up. The idea is to eliminate the vote of the negro or. at least, to reduce it to the hast posiMbl,, nttmher. TOWNSHIP GOVERNMENT. Ex-Senator Geo. 1). Tillman was I I.e champion, in the convention, of the township government plan. Having failed to carry the conven tion with him in his ideas of county government, lie brought all his pow ers to bear on giving the townships rights that they do not now enj >y. The convent ion was upder convic tion through the able presentation of the subject by the distinguished speaker, and he. came very near car ry ing his point. But on account of peculiar conditions in some of the lower counties, it was thought best to modify the proposition, and leave th c mi tier optional with the town ship.;, instead of mandatory with the legislat ure. So far, no one man lias developed siieli powers for leadership as to carry with him a permanent major ity in the convention. It is a good sign. mate or .'01:111 '. .lolina.
