Some Short, Some Shorter and all Too Short for a Heading, Yet None Too Short to Mention. The public has been hunted so presistantly and the trade solici ted so unscrupulously that many people are slow to believe any thing in a bargain they see in an advertisement. It matters not what your experience has been in biting at baits or getting worthless goods as bargains, it will pay you to try once more if you have not, at the Company Store. Our bar gains do not consist of worthless goods at little prices. A horse may sell for ten dollars which seems cheap, yet be utterly worth less. Our bargains are such be cause of merit and at the very minimum price. People are often astonished and ask why we undersell our competitors. We answer: “Be cause we underbuy.” We have just received a letter from our buyer in New York stat ing he has closed a lot of clothing at fifty cents on the dollar and a lot of ladies’ cloaks and men’s overcoats below manufacturers’ cost. This is the case in every department. Then this tells +he tale. Gentlemen are buying real nice all wool suits so cheap they are ashamed to tell the price. No wonder our store is crowd ed from morningtiil night, six days in the week, making one contin ual carnival and bargain festival. Overshadowing our competi tors in glittering display and tow ering above them in matchless low prices unequalled in the history of Gaffney makes ours the one store everybody wants to trade at. W. C. Services at the Presbyterian church next Sabbath morning and evening by the pastor, Rev. C. E. Robertson. This paper is only sent when the cash accompanies the subscription. Please don’t ask us to deviate from an established rule. Little Corinne, the bright little daughter of Rev. G. M. and Mrs. Boyd, has about recovered from its late spell of sickness. II. L. Parks, of the Bee Hive, is again on the go and business at tin- Hive is again assuming its natural aspect. He is a dandy. Rev. B. P. Robertson will occupy his pulpit next Sabbath morning unu evenii’g. He will also preach at 3 o’clock p. m. at Limestone. Mayor Littlejohn has raised the arice of a plain drunk from .$3 to jjlu aeh. He had three cases at the latter price Monday morning. We have been compelled to omit several communications this week iecause they arrived too late to get in type. They will receive our atten tion next week. We received a communication las' week from “Miss J. B.” We do not know who “Miss J. B.” is anil we cannot publish any communication without we know the author. Dont get mad if we stop the paper Jecause its not paid in advance but come in and settle up and renew. We have dropped some really good peo ple already but we cannot discrimi nate. Col. Sam Jefferies presented The Ledger with the finest apple of the season last week. Mr. Jefferies gath ered about fifty bushels of the finest ipples grown in this section of the country. W. O. Lipscomb & Bo., the bus tlers, have made a new departure in their business. They have added a line of jewelry. The lot contains all the latest novelties, the latest of which is the Trilby heart. The board of Aldermen met in reg ular monthly session last Friday light and transacted routine busi ness. A new pc) iceman was added to the force and now “Baruch” Lip scomb is “one of the finest.” There was a quiet marriage on Sun day morning at Beulah Methodist church. Rev. G. M. Boyd performed l be ceremony. The contracting par ties were Converse Webber and Miss r. C. Hill, both of Spartanburg county. Sunday night some one entered the cotton field of G. W. Elmore and stole 211 pounds of seed cotton which had been picked and left in the field. The thieves were tracked about a quarter »t a mile to the road and then lost tiie trail. The space between the railroad and the stores on Limestone street from the blacksmith shops to Lips comb’s Hotel should be looked after by our city fathers. A place that could be made attractive is now an eye sore. The Limestone Springs Lime Com pany. Carroll & Co., lessees, are now doing a tremendous business They have been behind with their order- all summer and Monday they put two of the upper kilns in operation in order to meet the demands being made upon them. The Ledger has received more cash in advance subscriptions the past month man ever before in the his tory of the paper. It now has a lar ger subscription list than ever before and we are daily adding new names. Keep in the band wagon by paying your subscription in advance. Mr. Lafayette Goforth, of McDow ell County, N. C., is building a hand some residence on North Frederick street and will move his family into it as soon as it is completed. Mr. Go forth, being a native of this county, is well known here, and will receive a greeting when he moves to our flourishing city that will con vice him of our high appreciation. The regular services *t the second Baptist church will be held on the second and fourth Sabbaths, morn ing and evening, when the pastor Rev. J. W. Walker, will officiate, his subject on next Sabbath morn ing will be “Power of the press,” the text being Ecclesiastes 12:12, the latter clause of the verse, “Of making many books, there is no end.” Movements Of People You Know And People You Don’t Know. Prof. W. L. Johnson took a trip to Campohella Monday in the interest of his music house. Prof. Johnson is selling quite a number of pianos and organs now and we wish ..im contin ued success. Mis. Edna Easterly and Miss Effie Hopper spent several days in Spar tanburg last week. They didn’t get home until Sunday morning. E. H. Blanton, of Home, was in the city Monday on business. The pistol accidentally dis- j charged and t he hall entered “Coot’s’’ head near the right ear arid pene trated the brain killing him instantly. The affair was purely accidental. Mr. Cecil was on the best of terms a suit of clothes only a few days before. “Coot” was a son of Mary Liles, j commonly known as “Aunt Mary,” I one of the best colored women to be i found anywhere, and he, like his J mother, was well liked by all. Budd, after an ab sence of several months, has returned 10 the city. M'ss Rudd's many friends and especially her little sun- ueutiis, will be more than delighted to welcome her return. James Garner, of Sunny Side, was was in tne city Friday and paid us a pleasant visit. R. S. Spencer, of Lawn, was in the throng last Friday. He is one of the oropressive men of his neighbor hood. Architect Fred Ausfeld, of the firm of Ausfeld it Seiz, Atlanta. Ga., was m the city several days this week looking after the new city hull mat ter. Mr. Ausfeld is the architect for that building. Dr. R. F. McKown was in the city Tuesday. Dr. McKown will shortly move to Cherokee, where ho goes to practice. He will have a telephone constructed from Cherokee to his father’s place in order his patients may reach him without having to cross the river. Miss Minnie Lee Sams has entered the Junior class at Converse College. Miss Sams graduated from the Gaff ney Male and Female Seminary last \ear. She expects to complete the course at Converse in about two ses sions. Mrs. W. C. Carpenter and children went to Spurt unburg Friday to visit Mrs. J. N. Cudd, Mrs. Carpenter’s sister. \V. L. Self, of Maud, was in the city Friday on business. U. H. Moore, of Blacksburg, paid us a pleasant visit Friday. The many friends of Rev. J. M. Carlisle are glad to see him in our town. He preached a very strong sermon in the Methodist church on last Sunday morning which was listened to with deep interest. We are always glad to have him with us. Mrs. B. E. Martin and children and .Miss Eula Boyd have left for Lau rens, S. C. Mrs. Martin was greatly pleased with Gaffney and her people. Z. A. The annual musical recital of Cooper-Limestone Institute will take place in the college chapel on Friday evening the 18tli instant.
