Davis, of Mercer, was in the city Friday on business. j. P. White, one of the most popu lar cotton men of this section, left Wednesday for Augusta. From there he will go to Yorkvillo, where he will buy cotton this season for the Au gusta Cotton and Compress Company, one of the largest concerns in the South. D. B. Withers, of Rock Hill, was in the city Friday. Mr. \\ ithers has but recently returned from St. Au gustine, Fla., where he held a posi tion with the Jacksonville, St. Au gustine <fc Indian River R. R. in the capacity of engineer. Miss Carrie Sams returned to the city this week after a visit to her relatives in the lower counties. Arthur Peeler, who has been stay ing in bis fathers store at Skull Shoals for some time, has returned to Gaffney. Joe Gaffney, of Anniston, Ala., is in Gaffney on a visit to his relatives. Miss Minnie L. Walker, of Sunny Side, is visiting Miss Inez Sarratt. on Limestone avenue. f Cowpens, was A Former Citizen DeaJ. Cupt. Wm. I). Alexander, formerly of Lower Union county, six miles be low this city, but late of Binning-j ham, Ala., died in the latter city last Thursday in his seventy-ninth year. Capt. Alexander was horn in Mecklenburg county, N. C. came to ! Draytonville in Union county in his early manhood, when ho soon married ; a daughter of Capt. Dunn, of that ; section and lived there until about two years ago when he went to Birm ingham where most of his children were living. Capt. Alexander was a member of the Baptist church and was well ihformed and much above the ordinary intellectually. He was devoted to South Carolina, especially Union county, where all were his friends, and he was proud of Ins native old Mecklenburg and that he was one of her Alexanders. Peace to his ashes. At Limestone at I o’clock p. m. his subject will be “Our mediator is Christ. A. M. Gilmer, formerly of this place and well known in this section, died last week in Texas of typhoid fever. His many friends will regret to hear this sad news, and also to hear that other members of Ids fam ily are siek with tiiat dreaded di sease. The family has the sympathy of their old friends here. Miss .Mary S. Garrett, the wealthy philanthropist of Philadelphia, will bring the young deaf children of her school to the Cotton .States and In ternational Exposition, and will have an exhibit of their work. Pennsyl vania has appropriated seven hun dred dollars for bringing them to ; the exposit'on. The tirst shipment of machinery for Gaffney’s mammoth now mill was made this week and will continue at the rate of about twenty car-loads per week until it all arrives. • •- New Counties. 'I lu re si oms to he a general move in the state for new counties. Ne cessity demands them and we are glad to see that so many recognize it. The chronic grumbler still lives, hut there are less cases of chronic Indigestion and Dyspepsia than form erly.
