He spoke as follows: pose and energy, might have achieved worldly success, sinks into poverty. It is encouraging that new avenues of wealth and influence are opening up to the people of the South: and those who are wide awake with a definite purpose in view will bo the successful ones in the near future. “It Is the early bird that catches the worm” and “I he sleeping poultry that are cairied oil by the fox.” The resources of the South are va ried and abundant and are still in an undeveloped state; but the cot ton industry of the North is on the march southward. This change means that the South with unequaled natural advantages for cotton manu facturing, hacked by the capital of New Kiurland, is going to In-come the world’s textile manufacturing center. i t Sticcy Shoals Slatements. Without discussing the various vo cations of life, allow me to say that every one who embarks upon the great sea of life must get aboard a strong sldp so as not to sink beneath the waves. To make money is per fectly legitimate, yes, it is commend able. That civilization, refinement, wisdom and the happiness of any community are dependent upon it is a proposition which few will deny. I thank God that men are employing their talents to make money. Wealth lias great and beneficial uses. The world would grow very slowly if wealth cold not he accumulated in wise and enterprising hands. But it may be used to make those near it more prosperous and happy, or it may be used to make them poor and mis erable. As ambition takes its color from the character in which it is mixed, su wealth is a blessing ora curse according to the disposition of its possessor. The power and intel ligence of Mr. Peabody to amass a large fortune in an honorable way and ids superb judgment in its man agement do not impress one’s mind with his greatness so much as the sympathy which prompted him to bestow it upon the cause of educa tion. Whatever we pursue in life, there is nothing better to realize than that this is a working world and that labor, physical or mental is a neces sity. it is the student who labors hard that curries oil the prize. It’s the soldier who faces the bullets that that wears the laurel, it’s the busi- then so shv that ness ma i who is ever at the post of duty that reaches the goal. But we meat of Ids purpose.” And we need just such men in our own country. While many repose in complacency and argue misgovernment. dema gogues sow the seed of anarchy and corruption and ultimately manage the alTairs of state. It is (lie impera tive duty of every citizen to use ids intiuence to have official honesty and lofty statesmanship. In whatever sphere of life wo in tend to he we should use every means in our power to acquire knowledge to fit us for it. Man is the only being sus ceptible of education, for lie alone is capable of reasoning and willing. Other animals, limited to instinct, are already all that they can be. The offspring knows nothing of pro gress and does not advance a single step beyond the condition and prac tices of its parents. Not so with man. A peep into the patent office some ol y< true, that ie soldiers who end their muskets during war were no braver than Hie wiio sustained the rebellion, the first moment to the iasl '.key nerved tin arm that struck for • hi ... Weil has it been said “there :*.io heroes without the kunvl and c *u- quorors without the jui*i!alio:i of triumph.” While peace and pros perity reign over our country we be lieve the daughters of such noble women will be as true as their mothers. Times and circumstances change but the tslandard of true manhood and womanhood does not change. How it stirs tbe noble feel ings of one’s nature to think, even for a moment, of that grand hosi wbo in all ages, and often times amid cruel persecutions, have but tied for the right. Our own Washington, the one that has a place in the heart of every true American rises highest in our estimation, not when we fulfov him over the ice to capture Trentor.. not when we behold him viaiorious over Cornwallis at Yorktown, but when we behold him as a true man. Robert E. Lee won the love of bis army and of the South not so much by his military prowess, as by his kindness of heart, Ids unselfish de/ votion to the interest of ins people, his noble purposes. The diadem which queen Victoria wears does not shine with such enviable lustre as that brighter crown of a pure life. Ou the contrary, ho.v often have wrong purposes blighted lives.
