The social event of the season took
place Wednesday at 12 o'clock at the
residence of Mr. .las. A. t'arroll eor.

of matrimony to Mi>s \ ir/inia, the
youngest dau/hter of Mr. and Mrs.

place in the Northwest parlor, which

thi’ relatives and a few of the inti
mate friends of the contractin'; par
ties were present. The ceremony
was performed by the Bev. B. P. Kob-
ertson, assisted by the Bev. Mr.
Bo/ers of Spurtanhur/. After tiie
ceremony a bountiful lunch was
served.
Mr. and Mrs. Copeland took the

thev remained until Thursday when
they took the Southwestern Vestibule
for Karly. (ia., where they will spend
t heir honey moon, after which they
will return to Sparlniiburj; where Mr.
Copeland is eii/a/ed in business. A s

ing friends who had accompanied

It was the intention of the couple

by Their Pranks.
Tuesday afternoon two black, threat
cuing clouds were observed in the
heavens, and the remarkable thing
about it was one was in the North*
west, the other in the Southeast, and
it was seen that they wre approach
ing each other. On and on they
came like two huge volumes of dense,
black smoke. Nearer and nearer they
came until at last they seemed to
meet. But just before they met there
began a sprinkling of fine rain, which
increased to a down-|*otir as they
came together, and at last the farm
ers of this section were blessed with
what they had been praying for—a
good rain.
The rain was accompanied by a
heavy tbunder Mud lightning storm,
.lust as it began to rain streaks of
lightning accompanied by claps of
thunder, began to manifest them
selves. tirst in the Northwest, then
in the Southeast and it appeared
the two forces were t wo mighty armies
struggling for supremacy in the
heavens. Kaeh clap of thunder
seemed to try to he the loudest and
the Hashes of lightning vied
with each other in brilliancy. Like
two mighty gladiators they seemed to
struggle with each other until at last
they had spent their strength and lay
down forrcjiose.
During the storm the three story
building of A. N. W ood, corner Lime
stone and Logan streets, occupied by
Wilkins Bros, was struck by lightn
ing and had about four feet of the
corner lorn otf. The occupants of the
store were slightly shocked and the
ladies badly fright •ned. hut no serij
oils damage done.
A cottage belonging to Famuel Jef
feries and occupied by Mrs, Agnes
Harris, near Mr. Jefferies home eu
(irenard street, was si ruck and flic
gable end shattered and th'' lop of
I he chimney demolished. The light
ning (irsl struck a barbed wire fence
two hundred and titty yards from the
house and ran along it until it came

into splinters, and a vase which sal

by the shock. None of the inmates
were injured.
(ireen Berry Huinphris, who lives
about six miles below the city, and
happened to he in the stable yard of
Mr. II. D. Wheat, when he received
;» shock which knocked him senseless
for a while.
It is also report<-d that the house
of Sam Sarrall. about a mile North
of the city, was also struck, hut no
part ieiilars were obtainable.
The heavy rain did a little damage
by washing out the lands, hut usa
whole, was heiielieial.
