A BATTLE EXTRAORDINARY! THE IMMINENT PERIL THREE YOUNG MEN. OF How They Made the Attack, Fought With Dauntless Courage and Won a Well-Earned Victory. LOCAL LEDGERITES. I.4i.Ht Monday morning there wan a genuine northside sensation. A bevy of brave bachelors,Jbaving no ladies to protect them, had a narrow escape— one, in fact, they will long remem ber. Karly in the morning before the an gles ami recesses in the store room of W.O.Lipscomb had l>een lighted thor oughly by the rising sun. Tommy Cole commenced to sweep out the room with an air that accorded with the old maxim, ‘‘None but the brave deserve the fair.” N. 11. In addi tion to this air, he also employed a broom. Hut, horrors! As he pushed his broom under the counter into a dark recess, it encountered the body of a monster dog! Tommy immediately yelled ‘‘mad dog! mad dog!” George Brown who was in a distant part of the room, seized a plow beam and bravely scaled a wall. Having perched * himself on top of the wall,he called to Tommy, ‘‘Bring that dog here and just let me kill him with this beam!” Tommy could immediately see that there were obstacles in the way of acting on this suggestion, although he wanted to see that particular dog killed' very entirely. Both of tin- gentlemen withdrew to a place of safety and held a coueil of war.George was sent out for reinforcements and such munitions of war as Gaffney might afford for repelling the attack of hostile enemies. Later he returned bravely to the scene with a revolver of John Mabry. Then the battle commenced in ear nest. After firing five shots at tin- distance of fully ten feet , it was deci ded that inasmuch as the dog had not stirred since the battle began, he was of course, very much dead. By this time, the attacking party had re inforcements. Among the latter was Walter Lipscomb. To make as surance doubly sure, he was deployed to the front to reconnoitre. He de cided to fire the remaining charge of the aforesaid revolver into the body of the prostrate foe. He prompt ly acted on this decision and fired. Having gained a glorious victory, the assailants came down off of their perches and proceeded to clear tIn field of the dead foe. Allow us to say, before proceeding further, that this last shot of Walter Lipscomb was fired at a range of at least, three or four feet. Walter, having shown Tommy and George ‘‘how fields are won,” took a hoe and proceeded to drag the dog from under the counter. At this hint of intended ejectment, the dog arose, stretched himself, yawned, gasped and otherwise expressed himself well satisfied with his nights repose, qui etly walked out of the store! He was tired of so much foolish ness, and as his assailants persisted in disturbing his morning nap with a hoe, he decided to retire. N. B. The firing of the six shots with the re volver had nnUdisturhed him in the least. As this monster reached the day light of the street, it was discovered that he was. at least, as large as a cat! When these brave men realized their late peril—well; we leave that to the imagination of our readers. Some men would have fled inglorf- ously from the field at the first sight of the foe. Some men would have sent their wives to make the attack. This was impractical in this in stance, however, as all were bachelors. When W. O. Lodges forming by the hundreds and members being added by thousands, and an order that every young American is proud of.” Improvement^. The book store occupied by M. It. Sams has just been enlarged pre paratory to receiving a stock of drugs, paints, oils, Ac. The drug depart ment will be under the control of Dr. S. B. Crawley. The middle brick store room in the block occupied by .1. I. Surratt and .1. N. Lipscomb, is to undergo a tbor ough repairing and lie refitted for bus iness. Work on the (ire proof vault in A. N. Wood’s new bank Is progressing and will soon lie ready to receive de posits. The front of the building has been painted in imitation of gran ite, with gold leaf letters and date, and presents a very handsome appear ance. Work on the new two-story resi dence for Mrs. Montgdmc^ptius been delayed some, but will now be pushed rapidfy to completion. It will be an ornament to that part of our town. A handsome picket fence lias just been completed enclosing our cotton mill, office, and warehouse; the painters are giving It the finishing touches,. Mr. H. 1). Wheat, the wide-awake manager of our cotton mill lias dis played considerable taste in laying off the enclosed grounds Into walks, bor dered with pulverized marble, stone, and has planted the yard in grasses, he also intends to plant evergreen shrubbery in season, making the place quite attractive.
