On account of the election and the crowded condition of our local columns we neglected to make mention of tin* meeting. The coun cil. however, did nothing of import ance except organize. After some deliberation on minor matters the council decided to call a meeting of the hoard Tuesday night for the election of chief of |xdice and other matters. I’pon reassembling Tuesday night the board took under consideration the election of chief of police. There were three applications for the posi tion, II. F. Porter, J. Caudle, and II. F. Camp. The latter gentleman was re-elected to succeed himself. He has held the position several years and was elected for a term of two years. Mr. .1. I). Turner was elected assistant marshall. The street committee were em|M»w- ered to employ a street overseer when needed. The position is not a |>erma- nent one, as the amount of work done will not warrant the employment of a permanent overseer. The matter of employing a city clerk, other than a member of the council, came up for consideration. The subject was not disposed of and will occupy the attention of the coun cil at their next meeting. Alderman Wheat moved to require the city clerk and treasurer to fur nish l>ond in the sum of $2.0(10. the motion prevailed. MeCraw has returned from the bedside of his aged father who has been quite sick but is improveing. J. P. White, one of Sloan’s cotton buyers, spent Sunday with his family. Judge Thomason and J. L. Brown of Spartanburg ware in town Friday. Landrum MeCraw son of alderman T. G. MeCraw, came home Saturday from Furman 1'niversity to spend his birthday. Dr. J. G. Gaffney is able to be up. Mr. J. T. Morehead and wife, of Gowdcysville, are visiting their daughter, Mrs. M. K. Parker. Miss Kflic Hopper, after a visit of four weeks to friends in the Queen City, has returned. Major Kennedy, the mayor of Blacksburg, was here several days this week. Mr. C. S. Cojieland, of Spartan burg, sjM'iit Sunday in the city. Mr. W. M. Cmokshanks, of Green ville, a veteran drummer, was regis tered at tin; Lipscomb Hotel on Tues day. Capt. Kd. Bacon, of Spartanburg, spent Wednesday here. He is the organizer of the K. of P. and hopes soon to lie able to organize a lodge in Gaffney. Mr. Paul Gaffney and his mother have gone to housekeeping on Gre- nard street. Mr. John R. Tolleson and family will occupy the same dwelling. Mr. W. L. Bobo, formerly o/ Gaff ney, is now a resident of Atlanta, Texas. Mr. Bobo, after teaching school a number of years, is now practicing law in that State of vast dimensions and vast possibilities. We imagine “Will” is in ids element. We can sec him now with his silk hose, and patent leather shoes, and small cane as he tills his office. We wen* glad to see our former townsman, Mr. M. A. MeCraw in town a few days ago. Sorry, how ever, to learn that his mission here was in response to a telegram an nouncing the serious illness of his father, Mr. Robert MeCraw, LOCAL LEDGERITES. Mr. J. I. Sarratt has had the front of Ida store made attractive by using the paint brush. Goudelock’sJ“Tradc Winners” are attracting attention. He offers some thing new in this issue. Mr. A. X. Wood’s bank is nearing completion. Contractor Baker pushes everything he takes hold of. The new Methodist parsonage has just been completed. Mr. U. F. Spencer was the contractor. The machinery of the new city government is working as smoothly as if it had been running for years. Dr. J. F. Garrett, our efficient and popular dentist, goes to King’s Moun tain on Monday on professional bus iness. Rev. Jos. M. Bostick preaches at Limestone Church on the mornings of the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month. His sermons are always jm»1- ished. Mr. T. Davenport's new store has received the last touches. He will move Indore the first of next month. It is a pretty and eonvient store room. Mr. J. I>. Goudcloek has in his pos- sesionasilverdollarof thedatenf iNfio. It has the full figure of Miss Liberty on it and is minus “In God we Trust,” and “E pluribus untim.” State Constable Lattimoiv yester day arrested Tom Sansing. of Cnion county, for violation of the dispen sary law. The constable placed him in the guard house at this place until he could have a warrant sworn out. There will he preaching at the Pres byterian church next Sunday morn ing at 11 o'clock. Littlejohn and E. M. Huskey had a difficulty in the city last Saturday. Littlejohn was ar rested and lined $1(UH) by his name sake—the mayor. The difficulty ! grew out of a horse trade which they made some time ago. When you go to a merchant let him know you have seen his ad. Some of them say you do not read it. You I should not leave the impression you ; cannot road, when, if you would only mention his ad. you could let him know you were up with the times. Don't drag on behind, but get in the , band wagon. The Gaffney Wagon and Furniture Company, R. A. Jones, president, know a good thing when they see it. They are enterprising, and alive with the times. Rend their advertise ments. They offer inducements you should take advantage of. Look out for their display ad. next week. It will be a hummer. There are several strange stories afloat now concerning some of our young men. One is to the effect that a well known young man, who is fond of the gentle sex will walk on the op- |sjsite sale of the street to avoid meet ing them. The other is tiiat Mr. went culling with some other young men to whom the young ladies were more attentive, so he leaned bnek in his chair and was soon in dreamland. Let all pull together for the up building of Gaffney and the eountry tributary to it. Patronize home in stitutions. Don’t forget the home printer and home merchant. Remem- ber they spend some money in your midst. Their interests and yours are mutual. When a neighbor induces a capitalist to come to Gailmy to in vest money, don’t, interfere, don't confuse and disgust him and thus drive him away. Let those who are trying to transact business with him have a clear field. —• *•»- — The Performance Last Evening. Ileywfssl’s Celebrities held the Istards at Wtssl’s Hall last night. The performanee was polished and above tha average, giving entire satis faction to the large and cultivated audience which attended. The “hit” of the evening was made by Herr J. Xicdziclski. violinist. That gentle man rcsjKmded the seeond time to an encore, the first time rendering “Dixie.” for which he was vociferously applauded, and the second time “ riien You'll Remember Me.” Oth ers that deserve special mention were Misses Hughes, soprano, Daily,mezzo- soprano, Craw ford, pianist and elocu tionist, all of whom came in for a liberal amount of deserved applause. The acting of Miss Ib/well was gfasl, white that of Mr. Rahadic was passible. Prof. Griflith/and the young ladies of the college amended in a Issly. A Mad Dog at Cherokee. At Mr. Lee Little’s home near the Cherokee Ford last Friday, a mad ! dog made its appearance, biting two dogs on Ms place. The animal then proceeded to Mr. Patterson’s, where it bit two'others. It then attempt ed to bite Mr. Patterson’s daughter. Miss Phronia, but that young lady had presence enough of mind to run into the stable and close the door. Mr. Patterson’s son, seeing the dog about this time, ran in the house, got his gun, and just as the dog sprang on the porch he pulled the ‘rigger, killing him instantly. The dogs which were bitten have been killed. — -• «•» •- Jolly-Sarratt. Last Sunday al the home of the bride's father, Mr. John M. Sarratt, four miles north of the city, Mr. K. \V. Jolly, was united in marriage to Miss Della Sarratt. The ceremony was performed by Rev. C. P. Teal, of the Baptist Church. The Cooper-Limestone Institute is naturally a pretty and attractive place, but during its session it seems to be more attractive tban usual. The Sunday School is presided over by Prof. Griffith, and it is remarkable how large a class of young men they have from Gaffney.
