Prominent planters from all over the county would come in every day and inquire the news from Columbia. Yesterday’s cloudy were not with out their silver lining, especially for the people of Cherokee county. Early in the morning Alderman Baker received the following message : “Committee recommend Cherokee as formed. We are all right.” This message came from Mr. Butler, who lias been in Columbia ever since the legislature met, working in the interest of the new county. Later Mr. Butler sent the following mes sage to Ed. II. DeCamp, of Tiik Lkduer: “Columbia, S. C., Jan. 27. Ed. II. DeCamp:—Judiciary com mittee of house recommend forming Cherokee county, which amounts to passage. They have fought us hard, but will win sure. Tiios. B, Bi tler.” The news was received with rejoic ing. Tlio whole business amounts to the passage of a bill creating Chero kee county. Let everybody rejoice, for we have received what was due us. ■ —• -——— COOPER-LIMESTONE. of us: ( For the next 30 days we will give, absolutely free, a box of nice /Toilet Soap with every bottle of the following preparations bought The Commencement Exercises Sunday and Monday. In changing the sessions at Cocper- Limostonc so that the vacation would come in the summer instead of in the winter it lias made it necessary to have a graduating class in the middle of the session, so commencement ex ercises were held Sunday and Mon day for tiie following graduating class: Misses Jennille Cwin, Sue Chand ler, Ettic Manville, Minnie Parker, Annie McClain, Eunice Peeler, Ma tilda Croxton, Annie Martin and Maggie Werts. Sunday Dr. Gwin, of Atlanta, preached die bachelaureute sermon. The services were held in the First Baptist diurch. The church was filled to its utmost capacity and peo ple had to be turned away. There were no services held in the other churches on account of the event. Dr. Gwin s discourse showed much study and it was sufficiently long to satisfy the most exacting. Monday night tlio graduating exer cises proper were held at the Insti tute, at which time the following program was most creditably ren dered : Prayer by Dr. Gwin, of Atlanta. Music—Rondo Favori, Hummel— Miss Annie Martin. Essay—Sa 1 utatory—Miss Jennille Gwin. Essay—Self-Reliance—Miss Sue Chandler. Essay—A Literary Kaleidoscope of Life—Miss Ettie Manville. Music—Fra Diavolo, Sidney Smith —Miss Lillian Covington. Essay—Claes History—Miss Min nie Parker. Essay—Class Poem—Miss Annie McClain. Essay—The Value of Time—Miss Eunice Peeler. He dis played much feeling and affection. Prof. Mack then presented the diplo mas to each of the young ladies, having a pleasant message for them. Tuesday the graduates left for their homes, all proud of their alma mater, and it is hoped none will over have cause to look with sorrow upon the days spent at Cooper-Limestone. B. R.
