8 THE LEDGER: GAFFNEY, S. C., DECEMBER 24, 1896. Bee GENERAL CONGLOKERATION OF NEWS ITEMS OF LOCAL IN TEREST. Some Short, Some Shorter and All Too Short for a Heading, Yet None ,Too Short to Mentiun. D O YOU realize that the weight of eleven months is underneath the calendar wheel, pulling her over to the Christmas notch and that every day brings us nearer the great gift season ! ? Now at the close of another year, and on the verge of the new, we greet each and every one of our many customers with A Merry Christmas ! AND A Happy New Year. Many older people as well as all the chil dren look forward from one Christmas co an other with longing and anxiety for the celebra tion of that birth. v Just about two years ago we were born into the mercantile history of Gaffney. Many of you remember that we had a very limited or small stock of goods. Every day since we first opened, our trade has increased week by week, and our stock has been turned over many, many times, until now our trade reaches for miles around Gaffney, and our house is piled from top to bottom with choice selec tions and crowded all day long with eager buyers. This we contribute to We believe in the cash business. If you paycash as you go you know how far you get. When you see anything cheap you can get it, for it always takes cash to get a bargain. Iflany matchless bargains have passed over our counters in the past two years and we as sure you we shall strain every nerve and ex ert every effort to increase our business with you another year and make your friends a customer also. Ladies' Hose, seamless foot and fast black. Also the best Children so and 10 cents Hose that has ever been thrown on a counter. Try a pair of our dime hose and see if they are not as good as what you have been paying 15 ets for. Again wishing you much happiness through the holidays we are Very Respectfully, H. L. PARKS & CO. The Cowpens Mattie Grounds is in Cherokee county. We learn that wheat and oats sowed before the snow is doing well. As fine water power as there is in the State are on both sides of ilroad in Cherokee county. According to actual tests there is as fine magnetic iron ore in the York part of Cherokee county as there is in the world. The immense beds and veins of iron ore that made Spartanburg county ’‘the Old Iron District” is in Cherokee county. Many fine home raised hogs have been killed in Cherokee county this season, firing in your heavy weights. Thk Lcdokk wants to report them. The only beds of Limestone that is worked to any extent in South Carolina are in Cherokee count}-, in side the corporate limits of the capi tal. The York and I nion parts of Cherokee county have fine gold mines that with the improved machines of today will soon be successfully worked. On next Sunday morning the pastor of the First Ilaptist Church will preach a special sermon to business men. Hut all are cordially invited to be present. All the members of the Providence Baptist Church are earnestly rc- (|ueoted to be present on the first. Sunday in January. Let no member fail to be present. John L. Alexander is the champion hog raiser of the city, if not of Cher okee county. He killed an eight months old pig Thursday which tipped the scale at 340 pounds. Large lots of material have been re ceived this week for the inside work of the city hall, which has been pre sented to Cherokee county by the city for temporary use as a court house. All the members of the First Baptist Church are earnestly re quested to be present on the first Sunday in January at the morning service. Business of importance to be attended to. Tiik Ledger added more new eub- to its list last week than ever before in its history. We appreciate every one and trust it will not be long be fore it enters the home of every resi dent of Cherokee county. There is a law requiring physicians to report all births and deaths to the Hoard of Health. The ordinance has not been adherred to strictly and somebody is laying themselves liable. A word to the wise is sufficient. Before the election, in its opposi tion to the new county, The Head light seemed only to be fearful that some interest of the “farmers” would be hurt or that “town lots” in Gaff ney would appreciate in value. Now it seems that it only had the city of Spartanburg in view. Judge I. G. Sarratt tried the first case in the new county and married the first couple. On Wednesday after the election he tried one Rich ardson for pilfering. The case was compromised. On Sunday he married G. W. Pennington and a Miss Philips. There was no compromise in the lat ter case. The entertainment of Blind Kd “ the one handed musical wonder of the age.” at Woods Hall last Thurs day night was a dismal failure so fur us attendance was concerned, but they had ns big crowd as they de served. Thejtotal receipt were $2.00. Blind Ed did fairly well, but Prof. Parker’s mesmerism was N. G. In fact he didn't mesmerize a single person. Its a good thing to stay away from fake shows of any kind. Since the election the Headlight says it has received “a number of communications from parties living in the proposed new county, and who make various charges against the manner in which the election was conducted.” We believe the mana gers of the election who conducted it are trustworthy men. “Serious” charges against just men don’t go far. No trouble for the Headlight to get “communications” when things go against it. — • • A New Lawyer. Among the names of the young men who were admitted to practice law by the Supreme Columbia lust week we find the name of Mr. Ro bert J. Gantt of Spartanburg. Mr. Gantt is a graduate of Wash ington 1). 0. Law School, and is therefore splendidly equipped for ‘his chosen work. Mr. Gantt will locate in Gaffney, where he lias many friends who will accord to him a liberal patronage. DON’T BE IMPOSED UPON. Send Those Who are in Need to the Proper Parties. There is an organization in this city known as the Gaffney Benevol ent, and Reform Association. The ob ject is to assist the worthy poor. It is conducted on buiness principles. It has a president, a secretary, a treasurer, a visiting committee and a solicting committee. Each case presented is attented to at once. The visiting committee calls and makes an effort to lind out, without incurring the displeasure of the applicant, whether or not the ap plicant is worthy—that is whether they are really poor and have no means of a livelihood, or whether they are trilling and lazy and are imposters. In no case are they left to go in want where they are worthy. This organization is keep up by voluntary subscriptions and dona tions from buiness men and others. We want to call attention to the fact that there is one impostor in the city now—a Mrs. Williams. She has not only called upon the association for help but in addition has solicted aid from other citizens. In the judge ment of the association she is a chronic begger. The Ledger wishes to remind those who desire to aid the poor that it would be best to disburse charity through the association. It is non-denominational and any one who cares to do so may consider them selves a member. There are no fees whatever and every one who can should become a member. The as sociation meets every Monday eve ning in connection with the Monday niglit cottage prayer meeting. Next Monday night it meets at 31 rs. Vic Gaffney’s home. Now don’t give everybody that comes around begging but refer Item to the Association and give what you have to give through the Association. The Association has already done good. It has helped some and it has kept others from imposing upon the general public. In one case where parties were re ferred to tiie Association they de clined because they did not want their case investigated. The Associa tion is willing and anxious to iieip all who are worthy and in need but it will not help chronic beggers. Reception to Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Miller. The reception tendered Dr. and Mrs. J. Roddy Miller last evening by Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Lipscomb was the social event of the season. From i seven until after the hour of nine the j time was spent in dining and social ! recreation. The repast was the acme of epicurian art. The gathering was a brilliant one and it is the universal opinion of those present that Mr. and Mrs. Lipscomb are ideal entertainers. — . ■■■ ■* 1 ■ 1 . , . , ^ --- Tolleson’s Cheap Store Wishes to its Patrons More Dispensary Blood.
