"Ma’s up stairs changing her

“Oh, your mother needn’t dress

boy in PecPs 3un gives the
following account of how himself
and a chum gave his father the
Royal Bumper Degree: “We went
upstairs and told pa to come up
pretty soou and give three distinct
raps, and when we asked him who
comes there, he must say, ‘A pil
grim who wants to join your ancient
order and ride the goat.’ Ma
wanted to come up.ltoo, but we told
her if she came up it would break
up the lodge, cause a woman
couldn’t keep a secret, and we didn’t
have a sidesaddle for the goat Say,
if you never tried it, the uezt time
you nitiate a man in your . Mason’s
lodge, you sprinkle a little kyan
pepper on the goat’s heard before
you turn him loose. You can get
three-times as much to the square
inch of goat. Well, we got all
fixed, and pa rapped and we let him
in, and told him be must be blind
folded, and he got on his knees
a-lafting, and I tied a towel around
his eyes, and then Ufned' him
•round and made him get down on
his hands also, and then his back
was right towards the closet door,
and I put a buck-beer sign right"
against pa’s clothes. He was a-laff-
ing all the time, and said we boys
were as full of fun as they made ’em,,
and we told him it was a solamii
occasion, but we wouldn’t permit no
levity, and if he didn’t stop laffing
we couldn’t give him the grand
bumper degree. Then everything
was ready, and my chum had bis
hand on the cloeet door and some
kyan pepper in. his other hand, and
I asked pa in low base {ones if he
felt as though he wanted to tarn
back, or if he had nerve enough to
go ahead and take the degree. I
warned him that it was full of dan
gers, os the goat was loaded for beer,
and-lold him ha yet had time to re
trace his steps if he wanted to. He
said he wanted the whole busineea,
and we could go ahead, with the
menagerie. Then I said to p& that
if he had decided to go ahead and
not blame us for t the consequences,
to repeat me the (Mlowing : . ’Bring
forth the Roval Bumper rad let
him BumpT Pa repeated the words
and my chum sprinkled the kyan
pepper on the goat’s mustache, -and
he sneezed once and looked sassy,
and he see the lager beer goat raring
up, aud he started for it just like a
cowcatcher and blatted. Pa is real
fat, but he kn£w he had got hit, and
he grunted and said : ‘Hell fire !
what are the boys doin’ ?’ and then
the goat gave him another degree,
and pa pulled off the towel and
started for the stairs, and ao did the
goat, and ma was at the bottom of
the stairs listening, and when I
looked over the banisters pa and ma
aud the goat were all in a heap, and
pa was yelling murder and ma was
screaming fire, and the goat was
blatting and sneezing and butting,
and the hired girl came into the
hall,! aud the goat took after her,
and the crossed herself just as the
goat struck her, and said: ‘Howly
mother, protect me!* aud went down,
stairs the way we boya slide down
hill, with both bands on herself,
and the goat rared up and blatted,
and pa aud ma went into their
room and shnt the door, then
me and my chum opened the front
door and drove the goat out. The
minister, who comee to see ma three
times a week, was just ringiug the
bell, and the goat thdoght he wanted
to be nishiated, too, and give him
one for luck, and then went down
the sidewalk blatting and enees-
ing, and the minister came in the
parlor and Mid ha waa stabbed, and
then psi came out of hie room with
his suspenders hanging down, and
aa he didn’t know the miniater wae
there be said com word*, and ma
cried and told pa he would gu to
Hadee sure, and /la said be did’t
care,'he would kill that cussed goat
afore he went, and I told pa the
minister waa in the parlor, and-he
and ma went down and said the
weather Was propitious for a revival,
and it asetum! as though an out
pouring oi the Spirir was about to
be vouchafed to His people, and
none of them sat down but ma,
’cause the goat didu’t hit her, and
while they were talkin’ religion with
their mouths and cussin’ the goat
inwardly, my chum and me ad
journed the lodge, and I went and
stayed with him all night, aud I
hain’t been home since.”
How a Bad-lpM Young Man Purchased a
* . Pair el Garters.
“Did you ever go shopping for
women f ’ inquired a~sad-eyed young
man. “No? Well, I did once,
and I have had enough of it. You
see, my landlady takes a motherly
interest in me, and talks' to me iust
os she would to her own son. You
may think this is vei^ flattering to
me, but I assure you it has its dis
advantages. The other morning
my landlady told me she lost one of
her‘garters coming home from the
concert the evening before, and
asked me to get her a pair on my
way down town. I thoughtlessly
consented. As I came down the
street I thought I would go into
White’s. Having entered, I tried
to get my bearings by the litho
graphs on the walls, picturing all
sorts of feminize harness in active
service. As the lithographs began
to grow more interesting, con
cluded that I was in about the lati
tude of garters, and halted at a
counter presided over by a young
woman with a mischievous eye.
That’s where I got in to trouble. I felt
my face gettiug red, but I firmly
asked for a pair of garters, expect
ing her to hand them out forthwith.
’What kind, please ?’ said she in
the most insinuating tones.
“ ‘Oh, wmething -pretty good,’ I
replied, painfully conscious that my
ears were blazing red.
“‘But what style do you want?*
she rejoined, evidently gloating over
my misery. Then it flashed-upon
me that there might be a hundred
styles, and how was 1 to kuow what
kind my landlady wore ? My first
impulse was to escape, but the door
was too far away, and, besides, my
errand seemed to have been tele
graphed to every one of thnee girls,
all of whom were eyeing me. One of
them had suddenly discovered that
the counter needed dusting, and
there she was, right where she could
hear everything I said. I asked
what styles were generally called
for, and the youug lady began
describing them with a roinuteuess
that had only increased my embar
rassment. There was the circular
kind, she said, and the suspender
garter attached to a waist belt, and
jaoother kind that fastei^d- to the
side of■» corset, and then took down
a lithograph showing the manner of
wearing that kind of harness. I was
in a worse fix than ever, and I ment
ally swore I’d do no more errands
for a woman. Here she was, ex
plaining all this toggery and belay
ing tackle, aud expecting me to
know what kind of standing rigging
my landlady was fitted out with. I
looked at her in an appealing way,
but she wouldn’t help me out, and
ihen an inspiration of genius came
to me. ~‘W4iat kind weuld you be
moet likely to lose off in the street V
I asked in my most innocent tone.
That girl with the duster must have
thought of somelhiog funny just
then, for she began laughing im
moderately, and when I went out
with a pair of circular elastics in,
my pocket I felt that every girl in
the store waa'iflsking fun of me, but
I didn’t dare to look around. The
next time I go shopping for a wo
man I will do it by telephone.”
