The first day of Arthur's introdnotioa (o the carpet department of Mastodon k Co. was spent in qnictly walking among the busy throng of buyer* and aellera, and in observing the ways of ths sales men in showing goods and perforce lis tening to their stylo of talking to cus tomers. “Madam, with yonr good taste, and my superior judgment combined, you cannot fail to select a carpet, even were it for parties that own their own house," said one salesman to his customer, as Arthur quietly passed him. yWctt, it’s not too light, end jet not too dark,” said another. The climax of strange, but no doubt convincing, remarks was reached by a very short, very stout and very red faced salesman, who, having been railed from a porter to his present position waa extremely anxious to sell to every cus tomer ho handled. “Mum,” said he, as he bent down to speak with convincing emphasis into her loft car—“mnm, if yon think you can got the best Hingraiu carpet for seventy- five cents a yard, you’ll find yourself, sucked in.” * It is needless to ssy the lady was con vinced, and instantly decided to pay one dollar per yard for what she foolishly thought she could purchase elsewhere for three-quarters of the sum. Intcreatod in this strange specimen of a metropolitan salesman, Arthur lingered behind a pile of goods for father infor mation. “Mr. Ilorty," the lady said, “I’m aiok. I've got a sudden pain at my heart” “I’ams at ’arts is bad things, mum,’ replied the little fat man, “but HI fetch yer some brandy. ” “Thanks, Mr. Ilerty, I fear I need it,” she replied, and after giving him fifty cents to purchafe it with, she waved the gallant little man away. Mr. Herty rushed down stain, to the head manager and exclaimed: “Mister Hull, a lady has fainted away ami I’ve got to fetch her some brandy.” “All right, Sam,” said the manager, Addressing him by the familiar Christian name by which ho was so well known when ho was a porter, and he told him ' he had better run. Presently Mr. Herty'a mbicund face reappeared on the carpet floor with a large goblot of brandy. He evidently knew where to got the most for the money, and oonld not possibly have thought that the lady would drink at all. After thanking him for his kindness, she drank fully half of it, and handed it back tojiim. “ ’Avo yon ’ad enough, mum ?" said he, smiling beneficently upon his fair cus tomer. “Oh, yes," said sh«, coughing, “I feel much better now. I think I should have died, but for your kindness.” “I shall drink thismeself, mum," said he, “I'm afeerd the cash boys might get hold of it, and it might do ’em harm.” “Certainly, sir,” replied the l^ly, blushing, and Mr. Herty, looking care fully round the floor to see that the man ager was not in sight, serenely finished what wos left When one half of the salesmen were out at lanch, Arthur had to wait upon liis first customer. A very refined, well- dressed, and pleaaant-looking lady stepped out of the elevator, and there was no one else to receive her, Arthur walked up to her. ‘ ‘What can I show you, please, madam?” said ho. “I want to seo Mr. Shady,” she re plied. “He’s just gone to his lunch, madam,” said Arthur. “Is that so? Well, I suppose you’ll . do. Ho always shows me, but it’s no matter. Bhow me a drugget ” Arthur showed her druggets and drug gets, and w’hen he had shown her all he had, then he commenced again. At last she seemed to take a fancy to one which he had said was a very good one. At this critical period Mr. Shady sud denly appeared on the scene. “Ah, Mrs. Jonee, how do?" said he, addressing the lady, and completely ig noring his new friend. “Ob, Mr. Shady, I’m so glad you’vt come. This young man does real well, but I like you best, you know ” ****••• Arthur now made up his mind, that before his first day was over, be would make a sale of some kind. It was one of those early spring days when trade is fickle, and as the afternoon progressed customers became rather scarce who wanted carpets, although on the two lower floors business seemed to be in full Wait. Arthur Waa left alone at the elevator, and he watched it anxiously as it slowly left the second floor, and at last depos ited its load at his feet in the shape of one solitary customer. “Young man,” said she--and she was long and gaunt, and her eye was com mending—“I want to match t carpit.
