ter. No definite answer has ever been re
ceived by me in reply to my communica
tion, and certain it Is no counsel has ap
peared In tho case. The Interests of tho
county, therefore, stand unrepresented,
and I am conducting the suits with an eye
single to the Interest of tho State.

The condition of our county finances
I* such as to create a spirit of unrest
and dissatisfaction, particularly among
lh* tax-paying citizens of our county,
and a feeling which will only be put
at reet by prompt, vigilant and com
petent action in th* premises. The
Grand Jury, therefore, recommend
that the County Commissioners pro
ceed Immediately to employ able and
competent counsel to enforce the col
lection of all defalcations in the county
fund* and who shall further take cog
nisance of the claim of Barnwell
County against the county of Aiken,
Being the proportionate share of tbe
past Indebtedness of Barnwell County
du* by that portion of Aiken excised
from Barnwell and In an estimate,
matte by Mr. B. M. Thompson for the
Board of County Commissioners,
amounting to 11,356 88.

Since making the above report Mr. Aid-
rich, ex-Trea*urer, ha* produced a receipt
from Treasurer N. F. Kirkland for one hun
dred dollar*, paid in on Ihe 22ndday of June,
1881, on the school fuijd of 1876 and 1877,
being the amount reported herein a* deficient
from an improper credit of a voucher for that
amount twice for the school fund of 1877,
which reduces the deficiency for that fund to
forty four dollars and thirty-seven cents.
