It is a fact, too evideni to re quire proof, that the female* of tliieeoim- try go through the prescribed course of o collegiate etfueairou without deriving, or even thinking of, the rich hlevrtui: winch knowledge affords. Their princi pal aim is to attract personal admiration and to make a dikpliy iu the drawing room. They drink of the ’.rater of Knowledge, (hot they may not be colled ignorant; they acquire a slight informa tion of the languages that they maybe called accomplished, without desiring to h c<nne funiliar with the rich treasure* of Hf rught. which a knowledge of those languages produces; they practice draw ing that they may gain admiration tor their fine taste, rather than to become tiiiniliar with the l^mililul aud in:ije-tK works of nature-, by trying to "Imitate their perfection*; they learn music, not that they may gl.dJen fheir homes, or pour out their own souls in UK-Iting- harmony, but that they may make a display and at tract a host of admiring f >ps as light-lwaded-as themselves. Now, must wc say that society, and even parent*, the guardians of young intel lect*, arc, in a measure, chargeable for tlii* artificial course of training; the umbition of young females is drawn into this channel by the power of custom be fore they have ngc to judgo for them- Selves; thinking this to bo the surest passport to the favor of tho “lords of creation." There arc some who even object W a hPgh standard of fomale clncatiou. How often do we hear them *«y : sous must be educated, bat ii is useless for my daughter to spend her time, eshaust her coustitation^or destroy her fine apperanee tvybig to obtain that which will never be any advantage in her limited sphere of action. It is true, she may not be called on to load armies, to make and execute laws, and to pic- sidc over pubiie safety; but she may be called upon to preside over the domestic circle, to regulate families by her wisdom to guide uud enlighten youthful minds and iu the proper pciformancc of their duties *ho will need that eluarnoss of jeaaon »ud solidity of judgement, to which a thorough aud well conducted education may conduce. The benefit of knowledge L« net merely the practical purpose to which it may be applied, but it is tbe power of systematic thought, the discipline and general expansion which it gives to the mind that renders it peculiarly important. Since, then, it is woman who, by infractions of infancy aud childhood, moulds the character of man for a blessing or curse to mankind, she should possess this ad vantage that she may exert that influence in a beneficial manner. Some aver that, the inferiority of woman's mental powers renders her incapable ot a fiigh degree of mental improvement; a fact that never can bo established, since her Divine Milker granted to her. in common with the higher sex, the intellectual spark capable of infinite improvement and pro gression. If her inferiority, as some assert, conei-.ts of a deficiency of their reasoning powers, then, the Christian religion, like the Mahometan should have provided, in a future state, softie region between ihe brute which is to be annihilated and the highest order of creation who aro entitled to a rank among superior intelligences, since it is this faculty that distinguishes man from beast, and woman in her deficiency forms an intermediate link between them. Too absurd is the question to require argument. Another objection urged by some to granting to ft:males an equal facility with the other sex, is that a thorough • aystem would so occupy her time as to lesve her ignorant ofdomeade avocation; but even in this respect knowledge Would be a bie>sjng rather than a Vurso; by opening to her view the vast plains of female action, ibe duties and rcapsosi- bilttic* of her sex ; so, that the time now - spent ift’ adjusting the paraphernalia ot fashion would bo doroted to the rotiidd the all absorbing frivolities of fusion, folly and the innumerable evil* into yehich her sex has fallen. It is our country, that, in many examples, stands prominent among the nations of fhc world. Her political institutions arc uno'jtnled in-the history of nations.
