In the last number of the Souths™ ChrkHtm Advocate, of CbArlofltoo, the scholarly editor lias forsaken polemics for tha purpose of giving bis readers soma 4 ‘ wholesome talk ” on impor tance sad iwponiibility of “ plain Anglo- •Baj^ work. ’’ In hi* earnest desire to discharge his whole doty we fear that onr friend has allowed teal to;outriin good judgment. In asserting that “ the stubborn and discreditable fact is, that our Southern p«gp)e. artJess disposed to work, in tho most obvious use of that word, than our Northern neighbors,” the editor adopts, unthinkingly, we hope, a platitude of Northern penny-a-liners that has had far too frequent utterance aud far too ready acceptance here and elsewhere. It has never been onr fortune to cross Mason snd Dixon's line, and we, there* fore, are unable to draw a fair and in telligent comparison between the indus trial habits of the two sections, bnt it is our stubborn conviction that in nil the attributes of useful citizenship, the Southerner is far superior to the North erner. With the itatittical fuel staring usia the face, that New York and Mas eoebussefaU hare a much higher per ccu- tnge «f pauperism than Georgia and South Cartdiaa, we cannot accept the dictum of the editor of the Christian Advocate that the South needs more of Che Yankee enterprise and industry. if the evorlasting Yankee is the su perior of the Southerner in any thing that- it commendable, we are willing to acknowledge it when proven by facts and figures, not of speech; but, in the m—imin. me ora sick of having him continually lidd up as the standard by which we ore to he judged, aud the par agon after which we are to shape our stalk and order oar conversation.
