The Chicago Telegraph aaja : Prob- ablj the moat wondcrfbl pbcoomenoD that Ins ever conic under the obtenrA- tion of the medical fraternity of thia city developed itself at the Montcalm Ilonse, on Erie street, in the parson of a boy utmed Herbert G. Schwarts. Herbert is a boy of German parentage, though boro near the town of Buckingham, in Tama county, Iowa. The Schwarts family consist of five persona, Mf. Cftrl Schwarts, the father, being a mao of some fifty yean of age. There are four children, two girls and two boys. Herbert being the oldest child. Mrs. Schwarts has been dead several years. Vt vastsiaAt* ASWl sir11 „ — , oCnWafTK senior IS « Ttrnior, Rtm wrti*iv do, owning h fine prairie farm of 160 acres in Tama connty. Herbert has for a number of years assisted at the farm work, and was, until recently, a stout, healthy and intelligent boy. Last April Herbert and his brother Frits we^c playing together in the farm’s barti, having turned tha hones in after a day’s plowing. At supper thnt evc< ning young Schwarts complained of a queer feeling in his chest, and corghed considerable. Thinking that the boy had caught cold, but little attention was paid to the matter, and for the two or throe succeeding days, though the cough continued and he complained of an op pressive feeling in the left chest, his fa ther used the simple country remedies for ordinary cold. These seemed to have a beneficial effect, for the congb left him, though be still complained of the singu lar and unaoenstomed feeling in the chest. t In the latter part of April Herbert's appetite deserted him, and he commen ced to loose flesh to such on extent that fVom a stout, healthy farm lad he dwin dled down to nothing more than a living skeleton. Various remedies were tried. The phyaiciaos wero of opinion that hasty consumption had set in, and but little hopes were offered of his recovery. In the latter part of last month another sin gular feature added itself to the afflicted youth's distress. The pain in the cheat became more intense, coupled with a tickling, irrita< ting sensation in the throat. Every one gave him up. With a last grasp at hope the father brought his son to this city aud summoned Dm. Charles A. Andrews and Earnest Solo mon. At first both doctors agreed that it was a case of hasty conauihption, but on Friday morning, while Herbert was undergoing one of hia worst parox ysms of coughing, a light or intuition suddenly forced itself upon Dr. Solo mon. Requesting the boy's father to assist him, he suspended the patient by the heels near a window, with a strong light down his throat. Without whis* poring his suspicions or intententions the doctor, with the aid of instruments, made an examination of the throat, so far as the eye could penetrate ; and bis investigation was rewarded by a wonder ful discovery. A foreign body was dis covered partially implanted in the mu cus membrane of the windpipe. Having firmly seized upon it with his instru ment, despite the struggles of his patient, Dr. Solomon drew forth a germinated kernel of wheat, with a growing stalk seven and one-quarter inches long. The stalk was of a brownish-red color, while the tendrils of the germina ted kernel wero massed in clotted b'ood. A violent licmonhage ensued, that re quired much trouble to check, but the boy though very weak is now much bet ter, and bids fair to rapidly recover. Dr. Solomon baa preserved the wheat in a vial, where hundreds of the curious viewed it in his office. lorrn tHjfrvK. " JT . An Infantile View.—This is the view taken of it by an infant of St, Jo seph Missouri: Little Freddie was undergoing the disa- greeabl* operation of having hia hair cotpbed by his motherland he grumbled at the manoeuvre. “Why Freddie,” said mamma, “you ought not to make such a fuss. I don’t fuss and cry when my hair is combed.’’ •‘Yes,” replied the youthful party, “but your hair ain't hitched to yonr head. ”—Harper’s Magnainc- The girls having altogether grown weary of young Cupid’a partial dartj hare taken the bow into their own hands, and it behooves the young man to have a care how he makes a target of himself, lest the twang of the cord pulled by dainty fingers, and the speed of the nr- r jw guided by cyea that are more pier cing than itself, shall mark one more trophy of their skill, and perhaps—but, of course, if any girl wants to shoot this way we’ll move up so very near that she will have no trouble in hitting the tar get. Apparently infinite are the uses of electricity. The London bankers are now using an electrical machine for the detection of bad or light gold coins. A stream of coins Is gently shaken down a brass slide, and one b^e thejukR upon a testing bar so delicately adjusted that a slight deficiency will set an appar atus in motion which jerks the bad coins out at a side evcapc-holc while the good ones pass into another receptacle. The invention saves a good deal of time and is correct to tbe minutest point, and the royalty of $200 a year is not considered exorbitant. JL Sad Chapter. Chester, Pa., June 22.—Somebody who had a spite against Robert W. Ramsdco, who runs a stage line between Chester and Upland, set Are to his stable this morning. The building was fired in three different places. The flames communicated to Mr. Ramsdon’s resi dence, a handsome atone and brick cot tage. The stable, wheelwright and blacksmith shops were burned to the grraud. Seven horses and two mules perished In the flames. Six stages and other properly wero destroyed. Ilad it not been for the crying of their little baby, Mr. and Mrs. Ramsden would both have beqn burned to death. Upon getting awake Ramsden at once rushed out of the house, which was in a blaze, to the stables, thinking to save his horses He was not able to get far inside the door, and retired terribly burned and almost suffocated. Pain and fhght aud the prospect oikis loa made the man insane, and, After running for a few mo ments, be fell to the ground in a swoon. He lay insensible for a number of hours ,and ,as|hia pulse bad stopped beat ing, be stm thoaght to ba d«* His wife with nothing on but her night cloth ing, escaped anbarued, with ber baby in her arms. When she was spoken to H was found that she was out of her mind, and at last accounts she was still in the same condition. Ramsden has worked hard all his life, mid what was horned this morning represented his earnings lor the past sixteen years. Every now and then we hear of the trial of a new sort of street car motor, but very little is heard of it after the trial is over. The horse is still mon arch of all he surveys, as far as street cars am concerned, in most of our cities. Still there is a possibility that some one will stumble on s street car motor that will supply the place of the present no ble steed. The latest trial was on the Third Avenue Railway, in New York city. The trial immediately preceding this one of an engine run by compressed air. The machine seems to have gone to meet Keely’s motor. The present en gine is run by steam. The motor, how ever, does not make its own steam. The stftm is supplied by stationery boilers at the terminus of the line. A small furnace under the boile r of the motor keeps it warm and does not peimit the steam to condense. Enough steam and boiling water is put io the motor boiler to last during two round trips. The boiler is covered with felting and gives out no heat. It is asserted that this smokeless, noiseless, self-propelling car can be run at about half the expense of ordinary horse cars, and, if this is the case, its universal adoption is only a question of time.
