We heartily congratulate this M Father in Israel,” and hope the suns of many Summers may yet shine upon to chefcr and in vigorate him. For his years he is cer- « ly a most remarkable gentleman, g unusually well preserved, men tally, reading for hours without tbe aid of glasses, and retaining his Inter est in home and national affairs. * May his last days be his best, and each succeeding year And him grow ing in grace and spirituality, that ho may be meet for the Master’s coming. vGUATlTl’DK. One of the jail birds, who was con victed of manslaughter at the last term of tbe Court at this place, and sentenced to two years In the peniten tiary, made his escape from jail one day last week, and would have got en tirely away had it not been for our pressman, Punch Ingram, who cap ered tbe runaway as he was making way through tbe Held In which •he (Punch) was picking cotton. Punch says he don’t know who was the most scared of the two, be or the man he captured. Well, If Punch Is sorter scary, he is one of the beet pressmen 1ft the country. v; The Democratic party in Bern well county Is neither dead or sleeping. Its life, devotion and energy were never more apparent than in the Nominating Convention, which met at this place on Tuesday last. 'throughout the county our best citizens bad been selected and sent to the Convention, men Identified with the best Interests of the whole people, whose sole aim was the preservation of the proud prominence of the “ Ban ner County.” We have seen nume rous conventions and legislative as semblies In session, and have never yet seen an assemblage that surpassed it In ability and respectability. Precisely at high noon itaj. Lar tigue, county chairman, called the Convention to order, and 124 white and 21 colored delegates, representing at least 4,000 voters, answered to roll call. Upon declaring the Covention prepared for business, Maj. Lartigue addressed the Convention in the fol lowing glowing words: It gives me great pleasure to con gratulate you on this occasion. As to the success of our demonstration on the 18th, Barnwell county has reason to be proud of herself. Her sons and daughters take rank wherever they appear, and have no cause to blush. Well satisfied with our past, we need have no misgivings for the future. We have men and women among us, and of us, who, with noble bearing or queenly mein, with knightly prowess or virtue’s charm, may move to their credit and to ours, with confidence that their positions are well assured. Without being boastful, we have rea eon to be sAtlslled ; but to retain this position our confidence must not de generate into apathy. Wo have the task assigned us of maintaining our position and of advancing in the line of progress. This task, this duty, we must perform. We have no choice but to exercise every energy to its ac complishment ; every obstacle must be removed as it is reached ; every hindrance overcome; every fear dis sipated ; every hope encouraged, and as a power, second to none but God, we, tbe people, must accomplish our destiny—that of sustaining ourselves in peace, prosperity and happiness. We have assembled for no doubtful purpose ; we are here to select men of intelligence and integrity to do our bidding, to etudy our Interests and advance them ; to forget themselves In their efforts for the public good, and to offer themsalVes as sacrifices on the altars of their country, if the ne cessities of the country require it. We have come not in the private in terest of any man or set of men, but for tbe general good; not to gratify private spleen nor to ecea personal satisfaction ; not to reward this man nor punish that, and not to make pub- he measures subordinate to private enterprise. We are Democrats not alone because the Democratic party Is a strong and powerful political organization, which may advance our local, and conse quently our individual interests, but also because the Democratic party is the party which advocates the greatest liberty short of license to do wrong, aud the greatest good for the greatest number, consistent with the welfare of all citizens, whether they politically affiliated with the majority or with the minority. We must each be governed in our action to-day by a sense of individual responsibility; by all just and fair means advance the prosperity of all the people. Let our aim be to seek the means of producing concord, to suppress dis sension, encourage merit, frown down treachery and stigmatise dishonesty and maintain, at every hazard, the unity of the party. But wo must not forgot to exercise a sleepless vigilance in guarding the roar as well as the front Like the vidette on outpost duty, let the quick ear and the gleaming eye for no moment forgot its duty; let every crackling twig or rustling bough be cause for extra vigilance ; let no fox-like foe insinuate himself within our lines, that he may do harm to us. Petty ambition and peurile senti ments must be disregarded and for gotten. We want men at the front, not laggards and dastards ; we want intelligence, not Imbecility ; we want Integrity, and not trickery ; veracity', not prevarication. I know you respond in sentiment to all I have said, but I ask more than accord as to sentiment; action In tbe path of duty. True, strong, vigorous action is noble; sickly sentiment Is contemptible. With elevated sentl- geoerous impulses and manly resolution action must be heroic. While heroism exhibits Itself in charges such as Barnwell men made up the bloody slopes of Fort Harrison or in ministering to those stricken with plague and pestilence, still that noble self-abnegation which impels the true man in times like these to forget every claim or hope of bis own to assure the good of the country. A nobler hero ism is exhibited, and we to-day have need of heroes. Tbe reeolutions suggested by the Ex ecutive Committee, already published in our columns, were endorsed by the Convention. Tbe two-thirds rule was adopted. Nominations were then opened, and tbe struggle became live ly. Ballot after ballot passed without any result On the 7th Messrs. Ha vant and Hartzog received a sufficient - ntrfc-r - v ii nairHYiin THE TEOPLE I bm toma* | number of votes to produce a nomt .g-yrrf ill i t HUTU lettfMfcMlNiyBaiBfcBellBMM nation. On the 10th J. A. MUIer, and on tbe 11th ballot M r , D. Paul Sojour ner were nominated. The light was now narrowed down to a contest be tween Messrs. Wm. P. Dunbar and Robert Aldrich. This was continued throughout tbe night. Bear after hour passed In fruitless attempts to arrive at a result Sugfeetioss wer4 made by the friends of the candidates to refer the election back to the pri maries. Thfs met with strong oppo- sRion, aqd a lively parliamentary war ensued. At last, about 3 a. m. Wed nesday, after the Convention bad Sat In continuous session for 15 hours-, the matter was settled by the withdrawal of both candidates, and the unanimous nomination of Mr. I. M. Hutson by the Convention. Mr. Hutson has repeat edly refused to engage In public life, as his health Is not robust, and bis law practice Is engrossing, but the di lemma in which the delegates of the people weire placed on this occasion, and his high sense of public duty at last Induced Mr. Hutson to sacrifice private considerations to tbe public good, and cheer after cheer filled the hall of the Convention when hft de cision fras announced. Probate judoe. The contest for this office lay be tween Messrs. W. Gilmore Simms, Judge Hay and Mr. J. W. Freeman, and resulted In the elfection of W. dll- more Simms. cocurr commissioners. Messrs J. C. McMillan, F. H. Creech and J. W. Jenny were nominated. SCHOOL COMMISSIONER. Rev, Arthur Buist. The Convention adjourned at 6:20 Tuesday morning, after one of the most ardent contests ever occurring in any Convention in this County, but, at the same time, without any distur bance tending to mar the general pleasure experienced at the happy re sult arrived at. The ticket, It will be perceived, is an entirely new one, ex cept the nomination of County Com missioner McMillan, and gave unboun ded satisfaction. Pompeii. Excavations at Pompeii prove the city to have been one of the most fash ionable aud beautiful of Roman Sum mer resotts, and but for the eruption It might have remained so to this day.
