Grubbs died at his home la Hilda at three-thirty o’clock Wednesday afternoon of last week following an illness of about two He was 71 years old at the of his death and the oldest resident of Hilda. Mr. Grubbs had livAi in Hilda his entire life and had been en gaged in farming. He was con aide red one of the leading fanners of his section and had been quite sful in his chosen field. He i a lifelong member of the Reedy Church, of which he was a most active member. He was al so a leader in the civic life of the eoasmunity and was always at tempting to improve the standard af living among his fellow workers Funeral services were held at the Reedy Branch Baptist Church three o’clock Thursday afternoon with the Rev. Tarleton Sanders, of North, pastor of the Reedy Branch Church, officiating. Interment fol lowed in the adjoining church ceme tery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. B. Grubbs, of Hilda; one Melvin Grubbs, of Blackville four daughters, Mrs. J. B. Still of Barnwell; Mrs. Hubert Still and Mrs. Kirby Still, of Olar, and Mrs Horace Croft, of Blackville; two brothers, W. S. Grubbs, of Black ville, and J. L. Grubbs, of Metter, Ga., and a number of grandchildren. INTERESTING PERSONAL NOTES FROM DUNBARTON Dunbarton, Dec. 20.—Mrs. Wil bur Tisdale, of Augusta, spent a few days this week with Miss Doro thy Tisdale. * The Beta Club sponsored a play at the school house Friday ^evening, which proved to be very amusing from start to finish. Mrs. Barney Owens has returned from Augusta, where she attended the Cater-Robinson wedding on Tuesday. Mrs. Anna Rountree and Mrs. T. F. Bennett, of Beech Island, spent Tuesday in Dunbarton. BASKET BALL PRACTICE BEGAN HERE LAST WEEK Basketball practice was begun Friday on the court located on the Atlantic Coast Line's packing shed ia B&rnwell by the local high school boys basket ball team. The girls have been practicing for the past several weeks but Coach “Monkey” Price had been unable to start.his practice until this past week. ELLENTON DEFEATS HILDA HIGH SCHOOL Ellenton, Dec. 16.—The Ellenton High School boys’ and girls’ teams won over Hilda High in two fast games. The girls came through 43 to 23, and the boys 38 to 18. Ladies Guild Meets. The members of the Ladies’ Guild of the Barnwell Episcopal Church held their regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. J. A. Porter on Marlboro Street on Tues day afternoon. During the busi ness session a number of important matters were taken up and passed on by the members, following which the social hour was held. Mrs. Por ter served her guests delightful re freshments during the social hour. Football Team Enjoys Banquet. The members of the Barnwell high school foot ball team were given their annual banquet in the home economics room of the local school on Wednesday evening. The County Treasurer’s office will be open from September 15, 1937, to April 15, 1938, for collecting 1937 taxes, which include real and personal property, poll and road tax. All taxes due and payable between September 15 and December 31. 1937, will be collected without penalty. All taxes not paid as stated will be subject to penalties as provided by law. January 1st, 1938, one per cent, will be added. February 1st, 1938, two per cent, will be added. March 1st, 1938, three per cent..will be added. April 1st to April 15th, 1938, seven per cent, will be added. Executions will be placed in the hands of the Sheriff for collection after April loth, 1938.
