Conductor Willis carried abut 80 passengers to the State Fair. The at tendance from Barnwell was greatly reduced by the session of the Court. Mr. John G. Hiers, at the residence of the bride’s parents, Mr. James Hill and Miss Ida, daughter of Mr. Henry Boyles. Over two hundred arrivals have been registered at the Molair House this Court. At the time of his death Col. F. H. Gantt was fifty years old and weighed Oflly sixty-seven pounds. The new passenger coach is. a bles-' sing to passengers. It is roomy and comfortable and the separation of the first and second < 1 is~r sections adds materially to the pleasure of the ladies and peaceable passengers. The following gentlemen are said to be candidates for the unexpired term of the Solicitor for the Second Circuit: Aiken, 0. C. Jordan ;Barnwell, G. Dun can Bellinger,' Jas. K. DavisyJ. C. NOVEMBER 17, 1910. v Up to Saturday night last the Barn well cotton weighers had handled 4,- 600.biles of new cotton. .i The cool weather benumbs the fin- gersn>f the* catton pickers and many farmers will not finish gathering be fore Christmas. Mrs. P. J. Drew, formerly cf Barn well, was the winner of the second gold prize as the best writer of an ad vertisement in a contest held in Co lumbia recently. Mr. L. S. Trotti, sen of Capt. S. W. Trotti, of Williston, has been elected President of {.he Brookland Bank of New Brookland, in Lexington County, chartered iVst week with a capital of $20,000. ; "" Mr L. W. Jthns, of Baldoc, was the. win ner of the first honor in the Barnwell County Boy Farmers Contest, having made 167 bushels on his one acre. . . . As far as we have seen crop re ports in our exchanges, yctlng Wil son Johns has made more corn to the acie than any of hi s competitors in the State. In a Week-end interview Mr. B. F. C., Nov. 18.—For the five month 3 period ending October 31, employment here at the laboratories of Vick Chemical Company, makers of Vicks VapoRub and other aids to bet ter control of colds, reached an all- time peak, and payrolls increased 164 per cent, over the, corresponding pe riod of 1934. _ . v This record is all the more impres-, sive in view of the fact that Vicks em ployment showed progressive upward steps throughout the depression. The company gained national recognition in 1932-1933—at the lowest point of depression—in showing an employ ment increase of more than 100 per cent, over the best normal recorcfe of pre-depression years. At the same time came the rather startling an nouncement that no Vicks salaiy had ever been cut because of “hard times.” This record „Vicks has consistently maintained—outstandingly doing, its share to speed recovery in employ ment and wages during the past five difficult years. In fact, Vicks’ expan sion policies were already carrymg out what the federal government sought with it s N. R. A. in the sum mer of 1933 to increase employment— and it is- noteworthy that Vicks still adheres, in all its laboratories and of fices, to the five-day, 40-hour week prescribed by a codie no longer bind ing. While exact figures are not avail able except for lab iratory forces, the office employees, technical staffs and management groups employed by Vicks have also shown marked in creases in payrolls and personnel through the years since 1928-29. Al! of which reflects a period of continuing increases in volume cf Vicks sales. Not only have Sales of its leader, Vicks VapoRub, increased, but—with the progressive addition <;f Vicks Va-tro-nol, Vicks Medicated Cough Drops and Vicks Voratonc An tiseptic—now over *53 million Vick aids to better control of colds are used yearly, in the United States alone. “Depression?” said Lunsford 1 Rich ardson, president of the company, a few ctoys ago when asked about con- ditions* “Vicks isn’t afraid of ‘depres sions.’ Fact is, we were born in the depressi«n-6f 1907, and since then they’ve proved 1 stimulants rather than dejrNwsants to Vicks.” Therecord seems to bear him out. And an item in that record of impres sive interest to business men is that, throughout depression, Vicks ha s con sistently increased its use of newspa per space, always looked upon as the backbone of its advertising. This sea son Vicks is using the largest , list in its history—over 2,600 newspapers. Extends Time for Auto Tags. A month-long license enforcement holiday was put into effect Tuesday by an executive order extending the time for purchasing 1936 automobile tags to December 1st. The new licenses were required by law October 31st, but Governor Olin Johnston’s military highway admin istration granted two postponements running through Wednesday and the governor made a third extension per sonally to round out the month. He issued an executive order saying, “In order to give'the people of South Carolina full opportunity to purchase licenses for fh^ir automobiles, I am hereby extending the time of pur chasing tags, without enforcement of the law, until December 1, 1935. “I, therefore, authorize and request the bed^ d of managers of the highway department to instruct highway pa trolmen not to molest those w r ho have not as yet purchased their 1936 license plates, until December 1, 1935.” The two previou s postponements, fro^n October 31 to November 15 and from then until Dec. 1st, also were granted liecause of a heavy rush of late registrations.
