His great strength enabled him to stop the gin in time to prevent th6 Im* of his hand. Eev. S. C. Kennedy will deliver two Iretares on temperance at Elko next meek—on the evening of the 24th inst. to white people and on the next even- mfc to the colored people. Major M. B. Allendale.—Crops in this section well not exceed one-half an average yield. A large area will be sown in small giain and the supply of corn wdj last until oats come. Farmers are paying up their i»tore accounts promptly and merchants expect to roVct 75 per cent, of the amounts ad vanced to their customei Shipments of cottm to date are a Ntf^le over 15,000 bales. Allendale is the only town in the county that has a 'vgular cotton seller; Capt. G. H. R'irkland fills the position admirably. An “anti-liquor society” has been 'vrgsnizeo with 76 enrolled members. A local option election will be held ahaut the first of December to decide w * l iether license.* to retail spirits shall Ar granted next year. Do wild animals know when Sun day comes? A very large wild cat is said to make trips up and down Ttir- kel Creek on Sundays. It was seen last Sunday trying to get through the wire pasture fence of Senator Bates. Farmer N. H. Stansell told us on Friday that he finished sowing oats before the rain came, though he had to work day and night to do so. In 25 years he has never made a failure in sowing oats. He broadcasts 30 to 40 bushels of green cotton seed to the acre, bleaks the land with a cutaway harrow, run* a toothed harrow across the cutaway furrows, leaving the land as smooth as a floor. He sows three jo. . bushel? to the acre and harvest from 76 to 100. In the Spring he applies 100 pounds of nitrate of soda to the acre. L Starkey, head of the Animal TTus- ordry Department, says that if his- eu$ repeats itself the price of cattle not stay cheap, and that it is berefere a good time to start founda- herds and be in position to sell rtjjuf cattle when prices li.-e in the Uluru-. While net every farmer hcruld produce beef cattle, many can e so at a profit, he thinks. TThe winter per iod in South Carc lina r relatively short and may be made liorter by the use of such forages as ciwt beans and soybeans, Prof. Awkey declares, adding that there » .many acres of the land now under al’.jvation which under the reduced r»>j* acreage p'an would make ideal asuacres for beef cattle, but unfor- MBtely we have relatively few good a>tuirs -apd there are very few farm- t* who have given beef cattle a houov- to make good. S«w»e advantages which beef cattle over other classes of livestock in Ais Slate are pointed cut by the periafist: They utilize large quanti- w of cheap roughage; they make pod ose of pasture lands which are ■r fmm market; they require small irweatment in sheds and buildings; ■d they are less likely to die from h*ase. Warning against scrubs; too man/ of which are still being produced Prof. Starkey continues: “The man who loses on scrub cattle is the producer rather than the buyer. The average high grade steer will weigh about 200 pounds more than the scrub at two years and wiH bring usually about two cents more per pound. This dif ference is usually the difference be tween profit and loss.” “Memorial to Valor of Soldiera of the South" The United States half dollar bear ing the picture of Grant and Lee, with the inscription, “Stone Mountain” on the face, and on the reverse, “Memo rial to the Valor of the Soldiera of the South," year 1925, Is a commemo rative coin. Issued in 1925 by the United States mint at the request of Stone Mountain Confederate Monu mental association. This organization, founded in 191C, was s|x>nsored by the Daughters of the Confederacy, to perpetuate and honor the memory of the soldiera of the Confederacy, and Robert E. I.ee. in particular. Money for the memorial was raised by the Daughters, largely in the South. One unofficial statement says that 2.314.- 709 pieces were minted, and sold for $1.00 each. The association had asked for 16.000.000. Stone mountain is 1G miles from Atlanta, Ga. This particular memorial depicts Grant and I.ee on horseback, and Is carved on the side of the moun tain. The original sculptor was Gutzon Borglum, who had trouble with some of the association, and was discharged. His plan was carried out by Augustus Lukeman. who completed It In 1928. In spite of the opposition of some of the northern veterans. It, was unveiled and dedicated April 9, 1928, on the sixty-third anniversary of the surren der of I/ee to Grant Robert E Lee. The Earth'i Thin Crust That the crust of the earth is only *10 miles thick, and that it must bend when loaded with ocean water, glacial Ice, or deposits of sand or mud, is the opinion of a professor of Harvard uni versity. The professor advances the theory that beneath the surface crust, composed mostly of crystalized rock, are 1,800 miles of glassy rock shells, which enclose the molten core of Iron and nickel: The shifting of weight, caused by vast amounts of sediment being carried to sea by rivers, Is one cause of earthquakes, he believes, for the earth’s crust must adjust Itself to the change of weight Ocean depths, dry land and mountains are also ac counted for by the bending of the earth’s crust due to weights.
