He resifmed in 1919 and went to the Federal Farm Board by request of President Woodrow Wilson. He resigned from that body in 1922 and went to Columbia to organize the First Carolinas Joint Stock Land Rank and was eminently successful in extending fully and equitably the benefits of the Federal Farm Act to 4 the farmers of South Carolina. Six years later he resigned and devoted himself exclusively to farming in the “hutch Fork” section of Lexington County, near Columbia. During his long Congressional career, Mr. Lever was recognized for his incessant activity in behalf • • of the agricultural interests of the Nation, and throughout the years of Democratic control, including the World War period, he was Chairman of the powerful Committee on Agriculture of the House of Representatives. Ills unremitting toil and accomplishments as Chairman of the Committee and as the farmers’ champion were so outstanding that he received the highest commendation from President Wilson. This has been sqid of him: - - “The career of this man is a modem romance. Small of statue, he has the ambition, the courage, the determination that would be expected of a man of immense frame. It is a matter of surprise that Frank Lever can endure all that he does, but he is as ‘tough as a lightwood knot,’ to use a colloquialism. If genius is ‘an infinite capacity for handling details/ then Mr. Lever is a genius. . • “Although the head of a great committee which evolved an agricultural appropriation bill, carrying a total of $24,090,000, Mr. Lever can go into his district, call a tremendous number by their first names and dis- * \ cuss intimate affairs of their private lives.
