He was born near Blackville He was married first to Miss Carrie Gardner, of North. To this union seven children were born, three sons, G. E. Pickling and H. W. Pickling, of Orangeburg; R. C. Pickling, of Greens boro, N. C., Mrs. E. B. Workman, of Neeses; Mrs. C. L. Pulley, of Colum bia; Mrs. A. Y. Oates, 1»f Lakelend, Fla., and, Mrs. R. C. Corley, of St. Petersburg. All of them are living. He had 21 grandchildren. Mr. Pickling married Mrs. Mallie DtWitt, of Blackville, and spent the last years here as one of Blackville’s most respected citizens,- He was a member of the Baptist Church., He leaves besides hi 8 widow, two sisters, Mrs. H. B .Grimes, of Lees; Mrs. Elizabeth Cave, of Whitmire; six brothers, E. E., W. A., F. G., Pick ling, of Blackville; J. D. Pickling, of Charlotte, N. C; Luther Pickling, of Atlanta;H. S. Pickling, Orangeburg. Funeral services will be held from Bull Swamp Church Christmi^s day at 3:30, conducted by his former pastor, the Rev. B. H. Duncan. 21 Persons Lynched in 1930. According to the records compiler! in the Department of Records and Research of the Tuskegee Institute, that there were 21 persons lynched in 1930. This is 11 more than the dum ber 10 fqr 1929, 10 more than the number 11 for 1928, 5 more than the number 16 for 1927 and 9 less than the number 30 for 1926. 14 of the persons lynched wefl^in the hands of Yhe law. 3 were killed in jails, 2 of these were shot to death add I was " tmnted-trrdeath-when -mob 1 wnwLjwTr 5 of the 11 other persons in the hands —- nf »he, law were taken from jaifa and — fl'fftmr crfffrers of the taw- outside of jails. In 33 of the cases the prisoners were ^ removed or the guards augmented or other precau tions taken. In the 7 other in stances, armed force was used to re pel the would be lynchers. A total of 60 persons, 6 white men, 52 negro men and 2 negro women were thus saved from death at the hands of mobsi. Of the 21 persons lynched, 1 w r as white and 20 were negroes. The of fences were: rape, 8; murder, 3; at tempted rape, 2; killing officers of the law', 2; robbery, 3, being a witness, 1; bombing a house, 1;. charge not re ported 1.
