K & h-' The inhahitanta of practically all towns like to boast of the size of the places in which they live and “point with pride” to any substantial in crease in population. Every ten years Unde Sam’s census show some inter esting and enlightening figures. Greenwood is at least an average South Carolina county. It is an agri cultural and an industrial county. Preliminary census figures released last week reveal that while the three largest towns in the county—Green wood, Ware Shoals and Ninety-Six— ^ahow substantial gains In population, the county as a whole gained only 37 as compared with the count )n 1920. Only four of the 15 townships showed any increase, the other eleven til hav ing lost in population. This decrease in th# rural districts and increase in the larger towns is without doubt the result of farm abandonment, the cen sus showing a decrease of 950 farms In the past ten years, or an average loas of nearly 100 farms a year. The figures further show that of the county’s total population of 35,828, only 8,000 people live in the email villages and rural sections, whereas four towns have a combined popula tion of 27,828. . There can be only one reason for tfcla wholesale abandonment of farms nad the consequent drift of people from the rural districta to the towns and cities. That reason is the de plorable state in which agriculture Bads itself in America today, and no ■mn caa foresee the ultimate result at this stampede from the farms. It !i a warning that cannot be indefl- nitely ignored by induatrial America. la drinktat K, of court#, you might hnva paralysia and rheumatism, and mabbe go blind, but otherwiaa—the staff Is fine. Note the Change. I am perfectly satisfied with the result of the Peace Pact, but taxes won't be any lower, and politicians won't be any fewer, and Muscle Shoals will continue to be e worthless asset, and Hk>over prosperity will help the more fortunate feliowa to maintain the soup line for the less fortunate fellows that are out of a job. Speaking of Efficiency. After spending about $7,000,000, the government says the Florida fruit fly is no more. It is an open secret that those fly experts actually killed and wounded between 7 and 8 real flies, and not less than^2 of them were diagnosed as the genuine Medi terranean fruit flies—with snouts and bills and proboscises and everything. Simple Strategy That Cotta Monkey Freedom When a Collector sets out to capture a monkey alive In the forests of South America, he certainly “makes a mon key” out of the animal. By means of a little strategy, the hunter finds it easy to lay a trap which makes the capture easy. There are some 230 or more species of trees which produce a fruit called the mon key pot. The fruit, woody and hollow, has removable tops somewhat like the manufactured pots of the kitchen. Among them is one which produces a seed that we know as the Brazil nut. When the hnnter is out for his prey, he removes the top from a monkey pot and fills It with nuts. In due course, the monkey appears, reaches in and seizes a handful of the nuts. His hand, so filled, will not come out of the pot and the monkey, if he rea sons at all, reasons that if hla hand went In It should also come out. and hangs on to the nuts. Being unable to get his hand out and apparently un willing to drop his food, he tries to get away with the monkey pot hanging to hla hand. Thus crippled, be is easily captured. Kicking the Backet The origin of the expression to "kick the bucket” meaning to die, is found in a procedure in the act of suicide. A person wishing to hang himself stood upon a bucket and, having affixed the rope to a beam and drawn it as short as possible, be kicked away the bucket and thus attained a “drop.” The story of Sheridan’s use of the expression Is well known.
