Sample was arrested by Chief of Police H. A. Stack, of Allendale, the morning of March 8th just after he had reached Allendale with the mail from Augusta and a quart bottle of whiskey is said to have been found in the car. Chief Stack made the search after he was “tipped off” that the whiskey would be there. After a thorough investigation of fact by Chief Stack and other officers the case against Sample was brought up at city court last night and Mayor C. C. Chavous ordered it dismissed on the grounds that evidence of his guilt had not been sustained by the facts brought to light through the Allendale, March 15.—The arrest a week ago and dismissal in city court here last night of a case against L. Sample’s car at the request of Mr. Vance. * Sample’s affidavit properly executed was taken out in Richmond County, Georgia, March 8. It reads as follows. “On the 26th day of September, 1929, I paid R. B. Vance, of Allendale, S. C., the sum of $300 for a position as rural carrier for another party at Saluda, S. C., for which Mr. Vance gave a receipt. When the position was filled the party for which I paid this money to Mr. Vance was not appoint ed. I went to Mr. Vance three or four times in air effort to secure return of the $300 but was never able to "get any satisfactory reply as to whether the money was to be returned to me. I then turned the receipt from Mr. Vance over to the United States dis trict attorney at Charleston and Mr. Vance was indicted by the commis sioner and is now under bond for same. The case is now set for March 17 at either Charleston or Columbia.” The statement made by Harry Grif fin wa s signed in presence of Chief Stack, Sheriff H. C. McMiDan and Deputy N. E. Harter. It reads: “I was going down the street to church in front of Mr. Johns’ when I met Mr. Vance. He told me to go to Mr. Bo Jones and get a package of cigarettes. He gave me a package be fore that I did not know what was in the package. He said when the mail man comes put the package in his car. The package was wrapped up and had writing on it.” > This is the first arrest in this dis trict and probably in this State having to do with the payment of money in connection with Republican patron age. The Senate Tuesday night killed the House bill to increase the salary of members of the General Assembly from $400 to $600 a year, taking the view that this is no time to increase such salaries.
