(Prepared by the llnlted States Department of Agriculture.) Its work often mistaken for damage by cutworms, the larger sod webworm ! is often a pest of economic impor tance. East of the Mississippi its range Is over most of the territory north of the Ohio river, although it has appeared in Kentucky and Tennes see. West of the Mississippi it has been found in Missouri, Kansas, in the Texas Panhandle and even close to the Mexican border in New Mexico, from which point the boundary line of its range strikes northward, avoid ing Arizona, but with appearance in Utah and In Washington. Its princi pal damage has appeared In the Mis sissippi valley from Ohio to Iowa. Facts Concerning Pest. In Technical Bulletin N. 31-T, “The Larger Sod Webworm,” published by the United States Department of Ag riculture^ George G. Alnslie of the bureau of entomology brings together all the available facts concerning the ipest, for the convenience of technical workers, and agricultural leaders us well as for farmers in the area where the webworm is likely to prove de structive. \Mr. Ainslie's conclusion is that “when once present in a field it can be controlled with difficulty, and measures used against it should be preventive rather than remedial. Such measures are crop rotation, ample fer tilization, and, in the case of sod land intended for com the following year, early fall plowing.” In the moth stage of its life the in- *T*ct is comparatively large, yellowish- gray. and with a wing expanse of an inch or more. The moths fly about at twilight, and drop eggs that develop Into the injurious wehworuis. There are two broods a year, and the first Is likely lo Injure corn and small grains. The second is more likely to injure grasses in pastures. The larvae winter in a closely-woven case of white silk covered outwardly with eanh jartldes so that It has njuch the appearance of a small clod. Parasites Attack Larvas. The larvae are attacked by several parasites. Birds, mice, moles, ground squirrels, gophers, and predacious in sects probably do much to keep down the numbers of the sod webworms. 1’oisoned baits have been tried with out success. In case the injury to corn is so serious 'as to require new planting, the new rows should lie Im>- tweeu the old ones and the infested plants should be allowed to stand us long us possible so that the webworms will complete their growth on them, withou* turning their attention to the younger plants. The moth* emerging from the plants will seek grassy places and will not trouble the corn. The bulletin may be obtained, widle the supply lasts, by applying to the Department of Agriculture, Washing ton, D. C. AUGUST FARM CALENDAR. Things To Be Done This Hog Sanitation Is Meeting With Favor Clean All Poultry and Swine House Windows boi ('leaning the windows in the poul* ry house and the hog house once or twice every year will increase their efficiency at least 50 per cent on the average, according to Ralph L. Potty, agricultural engineer at South Dakota State college. “Many hog house windows,” Mr. Patty says, “are dirty enough so that 100 per cent more light would he al lowed to enter the building if they were thoroughly cleaned. “Cleaning,” he declares, “is a much better practice than putting In more windows than are really needed. Too much light in a stock barn has the disadvantage of making the flies bad in the budding. The building is not so cool in the hot summer and it will be colder in winter. The best way is to get the greatest amount of value from the window space you already have.” Proteins and Nutrients Investigations at agricultural experi ment stations have shown that certain amounts of proteins and total digest ible nutrients must be fed to main tain an animal of given weight and to produce a certain amount of milk of a given test Any excess of the amounts needed will be converted into animal fat or be eliminated 1* the urine and feces. Protein in great ex cess of the requirements may stimu late milk production but it may also burn out the cow and very often mani fests itself In temporary or permn- ent sterility. A balanced ration ia one which meeta^the requirements th for maintemince and milk pro- ction. - i Agronomy. Plan row to plant an abur.dance of winter legumes for soil improvement. This is the most economical way to increase the fertility of the soil. Do not pull fodder. It is extreme ly disagreeable work, ar.d aside from being an expensive pratice, it reduces the yield of corn. Clean off weeds from all terraces, ditch banks, and other places to pre vent them from seeding, if possible. To become a better farmer, attend Farmer’s Week August 5th to 10th. Horticulture. Cut ou t a U d ea <I ar d branches from peach and plum trees and burn them to lessen danger from bark bee tle. Prepare orchard land for cbver crops—rye and vetch on poor lard and crimson clover on better land. Make plans for planting fruit trees and grape vines next fall. Do not neglect to spray apple trees for fitter rot. Remember that grape vines should be sprayed after the fruit has been harvested to insure better fruit nex t season. Destroy cotton stalks in small infested areas and dust with sulphur o:« large infested areas. Spray with ricotine sulphate or dust with nicotine dust all plants infested with plant lice. Clean up and burn all dead ard dying limbs ir the orchard to prevent damage by shot-hole borer. Dust tomato plants with calcium ar senate one part and sulphur dust four parts for tomato fruit worm.* Remove garder plants when the crop vhas been harvested to prevent future damage by irsects. To Team bow to control injurious in- sects, attend Farmers' Week. Animal Husbandry. Provide shade, fresh water, ard salt for all classes of livestock. Save feed by using forage crops and permanent pastures. Turn hogs on soy beans when they are about 12 inches high. Provide supplement for the failir g pastures. Carefully fit the show herd. To become a better livestock man, attend Farmers’ Week. Dairying. Select arrmals for exhibit at the fairs this fall. v M ow the pasture to prevent seeding of weeds. Maintain milk flow by supplement- ir-g pasture with grazing lots; cut green feed and grain feed. Keep milk products clear and cool. Plan when you will plant winter grazing crops. Some should be plai.t- ed early in September. To become a better dairyman, at tend Farmers’ Week. Poultry Remove and sell the molters from the flock. Don’t maintain a summer resort for cull hens. Keep the pullets growing. Feed liberally of- grain and mash. Lice and mites may be getting your profits. Destroy these pests. Supply green feed to the flock and the growing pullets. Attention to swine sanitation Is changing hog production on many farms in Indiana from a losing to a profitable enterprise. A report re ceived by the United States Department of Agriculture from Dr. J. E. Gibson, federal inspector in charge of hog- cholera-control work in Indiana, cred its the swine-sanitation system devel oped by the bureau of animal Indus* try with many practical benefits. “Our reports,” he says, “Indicate that heretofore the average number of pigs per sow has been about five and one- half, whereas farmers who are follow ing instructions as to swine sanitation are now saving more than eight pigs per sow. Cases almost without num ber have been found where farmers were nearly ready to quit raising hogs because they were unable to save a sufficient number of their pigs to make the business profitable. Since they have been instructed in swine sanita tion and are following the instructions In whole or in part they are able to grow hogs at a profit.” • Referring to the extensive use of the system In 11 bounties of the state where . the project has been intro duced, Doctor Gibson adds that, aside from the educational work done on hog-cholera control, nothing has had such a noticeable beneficial effect on bog production. They should be well developed and carry a surplus of fat before they are placed in winter quarters. Since these birds are really for egg produc tion, they should be given feed thnt will enable them to lay during this season of high prices. Allowing pul lets free range to a good laying mnsh will bring them into production sad make them return a profit during the winter. After they stop laying in the fall, there is a natural tendency for hens in the old laying flock to eat much less mnsh than they have been eat ing. It. therefore, is a good plan to Increase the grain allowance In order to keep them In good flesh. The hens which are to be used as breeders next spring should he given a vacation this winter so that the hatching eggs they lay will produce strong, healthy chicks.—Illinois College of Agricul ture. Beans as Poultry Feed Do Not Rank Very High Beans do not seem to rank very high as a poultry feed. Some poultry .men use boiled cull beans ns a sup plement to the regular ration hut not as a substitute for the laying mnsh or scratch grain. Potatoes are not a very desirable poultry feed especially when they ore high In price. Cull po tatoes are sometimes boiled and mixed with a little bran and fed to the hens to supplement the regular ration. The best way to use cull brans and pota toes is to feed at noon the nmount thnt will he readily eaten by the hens. Keep the laying mash before them so they will eat plenty of egg making material. Feed the regular scratch grain ration morning and night The use of the beans and pota toes will reduce the nmount of mnsh the hens will ent 'hut will not cut down mash consumption enough to seriously curtail egg production. Prevent Diseases According to tlie United States De partment of Agriculture, no sure rem edies are known for contagious abor tion in cattle, hog cholera, influenza of hogs, horses, and other animals; ta- berculosis of cattle and poultry; dis temper of dogs, cats and foxes; heaves of horses; bacillary white diarrhea, fowl cholera, roup or diphtheria, and chicken pox of chickens, and black head of turkeys. These diseases must be conquered by methods of preven tion. Clemsor. College, Aug. 5.—Gradual increase in square infestation ir all sections of South Carolina is shown by the weekly boll weevil survey made by the Pee Dee experiment sta tion at F1orer.ce. Examirations made in 103 fields in ten counties show in festation as high as 50 per cent, in '« some of the urpoisored fields, in all counties east and south of Union and Greenwood. Maximum infestation of 74, 64 and 67 per cert, were fourd in Florence, Darlington and Bamberg Counties, respectively. The infesta tion in fields kept poisoi.ed throughout the season is still low, averaging 10 per cert, in Florence, 9 per cent, in Bamberg, 7 per cent, in Greenwood, 9 per cert in Aiken and a general average of 11 per cent, in the poisoned fields in the ter. counties. Sdme inter field movement of weevils has been observed in the eastern part of the State, where the infestation is high, but no general emigration is yet ap parent. This indicates, says Director H. W. Barre, of the South* Carolina experiment station, that there is still opportunity to save much of the mid season fruit by judicious poisoning.
