THURSDAY, JUNE MTH, 1929. Woman and the Home COLORFUL STRAW HATS FORM A LINK IN THE CHAIN OF ENSEMBLE MODES s i Five Master Farm Homemakers Named In the current millinery program a flattering type of bat baa entered loathe sort which la making a defl nite atyle appeal to the better dr^ed data of women. We refer to the ex otic atrawa which are to exquisitely fine, ao handsomely colorful, so emi nently genteel. These straw hata, usually of choice bakoo, or balllbuntL alsol or bengkok. are alwaya selected with the costume In mind. The fact that they are dyed in such marvelous matching colors adds greatly to their prestige. Then, too, the ensemble idea Is further car ried out eery often by trimming the hat with the material of which the dress Is made, or perhaps that of which the accompanying handbag, scarf or even the shoes are fasbUmed. Thus the colorful straw bat thla sea son forms a link In the chain of rhlc as expressed In the unified costume. The medium sized straw shape Is farorlte—but bow versatile Its con tourl Particularly flattering and "the latest" Is t|ie longer back brim. It la really quite remarkable how truly be coming this type of hat Is proving The abbreviated at-the-front and elon- gated-at-the-back brim has face-fram ing qualities such as every woman covets and a pp red a tea. Manyjof the French modes carry the Idea to an extreme —but with fasdnating re sults. The long-back model shown at the top to the right In thlq group Is, however, a very conservative type—Just such as the woman of dls- crlmfoatlng taste and refine ment would choose. It la dyed a bright navy. * The inset of matching felt encircling the crown emphasizes superior style and workmanship. Just below to the left la one ©I those charming balf-ln-half hats, part black satin and part natural colored balllbontL And that reminds that the vogue for natural colored straws Is widespread. Perhaps tbs outstanding reason for the popularity of tbs nat ural tones la because they tune In so perfectly with the suntan and sun burn shades, which are the rags for clothes as well as complexions. Centered to the right In the pie tore Is a stunning straw headpiece dyed a most effective dark gtfefr to match the dress with which It Is worn. The last hat of broadened brim Is as attractive In one shade as another The model photographed was navy, but It might Just as well have been a dark tangerine, or a leofy brown, for the very smartest straws are often In brown to complement tbs vogutht brown costumes. One of the Interesting outcomes of the vogue for long-back bats Is the trend to back trimmings. JULIA BOTTOM LET. (£. 1*11. WMtcrn N«««p«p«r Union.) EXCURSIONS TO Atlantic City, N. Rock Hill, June 15.—After many years of service in farm homes with out thought of public reward, five rural women of South Carolina were paid the tribute of a State here Satur day when they were named Master Farm Homemakers. The honor was conferred by the Farmer's Wife, national farm women’s magazine of St. Paul, with the co-op- eratiom of the j3outh Carolina State Council of Farm Women and the Home Demonstration Department of Winthrop College. It was the second recognition of its kind in South Caro lina and one of 21 similar events in as many States this year. . The five women are: Mrs. S. J. Kinsler, Columbia; Mrs. J. D. Cole- mdri, Latta; Mrs. J. R. Thompson, Bucksville; Mrs. J. D. Darby, Switzer; and Mrs. R. L. Fripp, Burton. The Master Farm Homemakers are leaders in home demonstratiori clubs, county councils of farm women, the church ai;d school improvement asso ciations. All of them are Sunday School teachers. The womer ( have two to six chil dren and live on farms of 86 to 700 acres. Their homes may not have every converience but they get a fair share of the fgrm income. Judges who selected the women found them good managers of time and money, capable, "health engireers,” real part ners of their husbands and skillful ir the proper training of children. •ffect If strands of door whtta or faintly pink pearl baada art put around brown throats? Baki- "Thla la the house that Jack built" to the principle followed by many this year in planning tbela wardrobes. Some one first pur chase will have been made; It may have been a sub stantia! spring and summer coat, or It may ' have been an ensemble. Then with care In purchasing, all of the rest of the wardrobe may be Qraee J. Austin, chosen, with no tone-clashing. Thla does not at all mean, as with the report of so many brides, "all accessories match." but rather, that all accessories should har monise. ' Suppose the tweed of the coat has a green thread In It; It will glva that subtle and desired air of "plan" when worn with a green dress; with a gay figured silk which has green as a definite part of Its color pat tern, or with one of the fluffy organ dies If given soft folds of green lo the trimming of the gown snd Jade costume Jewelry. Just as an airman can trace the progress of a river through many a winding curve, ao this planning In the matter of costume will not be lost on the observers, who will feel a sense of harmony even If they do not analyze Just what pro duces It Dame Fashion lately went on a chartreuse hunt Let no Volsteadian be alarmed. It is true that Webster defines this term as a pale green or yellow liquor of complex composition, prepared by the Carthusian monks of Tarragona, Spain, and said to con tain balm leaves, orange, peel, hyssop, peppermint and numerous other in gredients. But the point of this story is that the newest fashion decrees are all dotted over with this word “Char- treuse” as a color. ~ “Describe ‘Chartreuse,* please," begged Dame Fashion of a fabric au thority. He agreed at once that the color is much to the fore, and de clared that If was “greenish-yellow,*’ or “yellowish-green." One fashion edict has said that cdmbinations of bright blue and chartreuse, brown and chartreuse, and chartreuse with black are the season's most “chic" effects. Meditatively the authority re marked : “Do you know what a love bird looks like? Well, that color to what I call ‘chartreuse'.** Seeing a young man hurrying in through the door of a theater wear ing a felt hat of as bright a scarlet - as any proud cockerel's comb gave Dame Fashion another bit of color meditation. Ten years ago this young man would have gained much more attention than at present, when be seemed to be considered Just a cheer ful matter-of-course object It would not be hard to bring It down to genu ine statistics, how many thousands leas of black hats are offered this year to both men and women la similar seasons previous. to t favorite world, not for abodes of materials, bat also c* jn^wtu b# Um The Modern Home it Incomplete without an electric refrigerator General Electric Refrigerator u now being installed in many homes in Barnwell and Yicinity. •ECIAL SALE TERMS ON ALL MODEI $10.00 CASH Balance Payable in 30 Equal Payments See the latest Models on display at the BARNWELL, BLACKVILLE, W1LL1STON DENMARK SOUTH CAROLINA POWER CO. or ask any employe#.
