Dowling, of Bamberg, shipped the first bale of new cotton on Tuesday last. The Barnwell Agricultural and Me chanical Society will hold their annual fair one month earlier this year. The Republican County Convention met at colored schoolhouse at Blackville on. Saturday last and was called to order by Fred Nix, Jr., county chairman. Fifty-six delegates an swered to roll call, 52 of whom were American citizens of African descent. A report was adopted that no delegates (to the State Con vention in Columbia) should be chosen unless thty are willing and able to pay their own expenses and the elec tion resulted in the choice of the fol lowing delegates: Fred Nix, Jr., W. S. Dixor\ Jacob Hankinson, P. B. Mc Night and Scipio Bennett. We note the arrival of Mr. Le vy, of Augusta, the father of our popular young townsman, Jake. Eggs, chickens and butter are scarce and good prices can be obtained for the samei * / ' S The proposed jute and yarn factory for Blackville having been found to be too expensive, it was decided to turn the old court house into a high school building, and a meeting was called for Saturday, August 17th, to discuss the matter. Mr. A. M. Owens denied a report that he had joined the radicals and branded its author as a wilful liar. Kx-CJovernor Moses still lingers in Gotham. Blackville Dots. Mr. P. W. Farrell has nearly finish ed his new store and oxpects to move into it the last of this month. Mr. Brown is building a barn back of hi s commodious stable, and it will add greatly to the appearance of the same. Miss Beckworth, who astonished the world some time ago by* swimming ten miles in the Thames before she was fifteen, years of age, will shortly make an attempt to swim twice that distance. Should she succeed she will probably try tho passage from Dover to Calais. (Note:—Most of the issue quoted fror^ this week was devoted to political new's, with little of general interest to the present generation.) Emory Howell,’of Georgetown, is visiting relatives in Olar.. Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Corley have re turned to their home in Columbia af ter a week’s visit to Mrs. Corley’s par ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Creech. Joe Wyatt Hartzffg, The State’s popular representative^ spent several days in Atlanta this week. Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Gunnels, Jr., of Macon, Ga., are visiting relatives here. A review of last season’s records discloses several striking in stances of father and son capturing first honors In various agricultural contests. In Arkansas W. T. Beall, of Wilson, won the State Five-Acre Cotton Con- tsst for adults and hit son, Klstner, won two State-wide contests for stu dents of Vocational Agriculture; one was in cotton growing and another In corn. Elstner also was awarded first place in corn production among voca tional students In the entire South. L. S. Strickland of Royston, Ga., proved himself the best cotton farmer In Georgia for the year and his son, Thomas, won the State cotton cham pionship for boys in 4-H Agricultural Clubs. Three prize winners in one family was the -en viable record of B. N. nell and sons of Glen Allen, Miss. Mr. Darnell won the State Cotton Con test. His sons, Watt and John, won first and second prizes, respectively, /n the 4-H Corn Club Contest for boys in their county. Among these prize winners, there are three points which all agree are necessary for the production of good crops. These are thorough cultivation, good seed and liberal fertilization. Each father and son applied a liberal amount of fertilizer prior to planting ami each side-dressed with nitrate of soda applications ranging from 150 to 800 pounds per acre.
