THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, lt27 {By B*V. P. S. FITZWATBR. D.D.. Dm* Moody Blblo Inst I tut* of Chicago.) Lesson for November 20 V V MICAH CHAMPIONS PRESSED THE OP- LESSON TEXT—Mlcah, chs. 2, t and «. GOLDEN TEXT—What doth th® Lord require of thee, but to do Justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God. — PRIMARY TOPIC—What God Wants Us to Do. JUNIOR TOPIC—What God Requires of Us. INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOP IC—What God ' Requites of Us. YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULT TOP IC—Th® Prophetic Interpretation of Religion. Mlcah prophesied during the reign ot Jothan, Ahaz and Hezeklah, In Ju dah, but his message largely concerned Israel. He Is called the mcophet of the poor. He ptoclalmed /Impending doom upon the workers of unrighteous ness and heralded the coming of the Messiah. ; l. Evil Workers Denounced (2:1-3). 1. How they worked (v. 1). Their evil work was not a matter of Impulse, but of deliberate purpose. (1) It was conceived In their mind. They gave themselves to the devising of wicked schemes. (2) They worked evil upon their beds. They used the quiet hours of the night while honest people were sleeping for planning ways to work out their schemes. (8) They executed their plans In ths morning light Having ppwer to carry out their schemes, they did what their wicked minds devised. 2. What they do (v. 2). (1) They covet fields (v. 2). In this they violated the tenth com- m and men t - tT 1 -tHke fluids and houses." ▲ covetous spirit will eventuate In such deeds unless restrained. (3) They oppress a man and his bouse (▼. 2). By bouse Is meant a man’s descend ants, the Inheritors of his property. 3. Their punishment (v. 3). Against such evil doers God Is de vising a righteous retribution which will fall upon them with such weight as to humble them. II. Upon Whom Judgment Shall Fall (3:1-12). L The unfaithful rulers (tv. 1-4). Because <>f love for the evil and ha tred for the good the rulers merciless ly destroyed the people. 2. The false prophets (vv. 5-8). They served for hire. As long ss supplied with food, they prophesied to please the people. 3. The Judgment which Is to fill (vv. 9-12). Jerusalem was destroyed because of the sins of the people. Just as the righteous retribution fell then, we can be assured that there will be no es cape from the coming Judgment for those who destroy ths people. III. God’s Controvsrsy (6:1-13) Wicked men may go on to a certain lime with their schemes, but eventual ly the Lord’s requirements shall be met L The hills and the mountains called to bear witness against Israel <v. 2). The people had tugoed a deaf ear to God so that Inanimate creation was ’called upon to witness against them, i The guilty party left to itite RELIEF IN SMTU COSTS S17M000 Greatest Disaster of History but One of 111 Operations in * Year of Caiamity. Tfie King of the uitfvfrse abdicates His rights alid allows His sinning people to make charges against Him. 8. God recounts His mercies unto 4^e people (vv. 4, 5). Having paused for the charge and none having been brought, the Lord thrust home upon their conscience the memory of His great mercies. (1) He brought them out of Egyp tian bondage (v. 4). He has done even more for us who were under bondage to sin and Satan. i2) Sent before them a trio of lead ers (v. 4). Moses, the iawglver; Aaron, the high priest, and Miriam, the prophetess, were sent to bear witness. (3) Turned*. Balak’s curse Into a blessing through "Balaam (v. 5). 4. God’s requirements (w. 6-13). (1) The great question, “Wherewith shall I come before the Lord?’ The Jews could not deny the charge brdught against them by the Almighty. (2) The complete answer (v. 8). B. “To do Justly.” Strict equity was to characterize all their dealings with their fellowmen. b. ‘To love mercy." The heart was to be diligently set to do good to our fellows. c. ‘To walk humbly with thy God.” This means to recognize that we are sinners before God, with no claim upon Him except His pardoning love. Tornadoes headed the list of dlsas- ters-rwhich struck the United States In the past year, the report of Jled Cross relief operations for the year ending June 30, showing 29 great storms. Floods were second on the list, 24 being recorded for the same period., ■ L " This record does not include the St Louis tornado which occurred in the current fiscal year, as did a num ber of other storms and disasters since, in which the Red Cross provid ed relief. _ ' Included in the list .of 111 disasters covered by the record of the past year’s relief operations of the Red Cross, are earthquakes, explosions, mine disasters, a cloudburst, a hail storm, fires, floods, hurricanes, a rail road wreck, a scarlet fever epidemic, typhoid epidemic, tornadoes, and a typhoon. The latter occurred in the Philippines, but is included in the operations at home. In all, the Red Cross extended Its services in 77 ma jor disasters la the United States and in 20 abroad, Including a hurricane over Havana, Cuba, and the Isle of Pines, ohe in the Bahamas, and oth ers through various West Indian re gions, fire in Porto Rico, another in Haiti, earthquakes In Armenia, Japan and Albania, floods In Jugo Slavia and Mexico. The organization conducted refugee relief operations in Syria, Bulgaria and China, the latter largely due to factional wars fought over various parts of China the past year. The two outstanding disasters at home were the Florida hurricane and the Mississippi Valley flood. Rehabili tation operations of the latter disaster are still In progress under the Red Cross. A national appeal for funds was made In both disasters, resulting in contributions for relief amounting do more than $20,000,000. The Mississippi flood ,1s the out standing disaster In the whole history of the Red Cross disaster relief serv ice. In (his one catastrophe the or ganization raised through subscrip tions by the people of the country and foreign nations approximately $17,- 000,000 for relief use. Aided by this fund It fed. clothed, sheltered or oth erwise assisted more than 600.000 hu man beings, fed and cared for ap proximately 200.000 head of livestock and established 149 refugee camps. The flood Inundated approximately 20.009 square miles and affected 174 counties in eight states. Some 330,- 000 homeless persons were sheltered In Red Cross camps. When the emer gency was at Its height the Red Cross was serving more than a million meals a day. So vast was the work imposed on the Red Cross and allied agencies conducting rehabilitation that this phase of the flood relief task la ex pected to extend well Into the coming year. Up to September 15. 104,441 families In the floo<^ zone had been given rehabilitation assistance by the Red Cross, and 1,700,000 acres of flooded crop land in seven States had been replanted with Red Cross aid. There had been expended or commit ted for expenditure in connection with this relief and rehabilitation work a total of $15,660,000.* The appeal for a nation wide mem bership incregs '. out. tit ba^fd orT (he realization that demands on Red Cross service such as occasioned by disaster relief are increasing each year.
