Ail these lands had beet cut over from time to time, but fenough trees were left to keep the land fairly well reseeded. A survey of the standing Umber showed th t long leaf yellow pine was the predominant tree, par- Ucularly on the higher and drier areas. Loblolly pine was found in the lower areas with hardwoods of various va rieties in the bays and slashes. Slash pine which Is considered quite doalr- able was not found In quantltler Doc Cook of North Pole feme, from his cell in the Lerfkenworth prison, asks U. S. A turpentine operation was then start ed- Only trees, nine Inches in diam eter at breast measure are cupped. Only one cup is placed on a tree and only one-third the circumference of thj tree Is used. Depth of chip is not allowed to exceed three-fourths of an Inch. A sawmill was established and has been operated with satisfac tory results. Only mature trees were cut. In all instance* steps have been taken to protech the growing trees and all brushwood has been removed. Good Results Promised. Thus far as the result of this oper ation a village of twenty-six houses has been created and permanent em ployment has been given to a number | of persons. \\&ile our experience is as yet quite limited, it has sustained the belief that the operation may con tinue Indefinitely, paying Its own way, and giving a satisfactory return on the investment in the land and improve ments. The main problem which must be solved before the South’s pine belt-I Shall come Into Its own and realize most fully upon its greatest timber resource—the pine tree—is that of {controlling tires gnd preventing the promiscuous burning of forest lands. The important thing to do is to Im press upon the people the disastrous results which come from having fires sweep over the timber tracts. The fact that the destruction of timber |s detrimental to the interest of ev- ery one as well as to Ihs owner of timber lands must be brought home to all the peoplp. We believe that whatever may be done along the line of educating the K ple ae to the dee true live effect of ning the woods annually is most 1m- We know that oar cut-over lands would soon be beering por- of valuable trees.
