THURSDAY, MAY lOTH. 1927. Afv — ' — ■ ^ ■ ^ odd hard facts are usually just ’ that—except on many cold hard tomb stones. Ignorance of the law excuses no * f aaa—but knowledge, of the law con fuses every one. Stretching the truth is one way of making things go as far as they can —but look out for the snap-back. We never looked at it this way before but it is a fact that there are an awful lot of “a” curves in Missis sippi. If Ruth Brown Snyder goes to the electric chair in New York, she will be the fourth of the seven women put to death in this State, who murder ed or helped to murder their hus bands. This being a husband also its haxarda— Business and Printer's Ink. 1 o Ws haven’t much patience with the local merchant who complains about the business that is going to the mail-order houses and to mer cantile establishments in nearby dtfcs when the said merchant is a non-advertiser, although he has our sympathy. Not long ago we heard such a complaint from a merchant friend who nursed a grievance against the city merchants who were attracting considerable trade from Barnwell. At about the same time we were reliably informed that an ether local merchant had sold of clothes in one day. One merchants is an almost weekly oser of printer’s ink in one form or another—the other is not! Several daily newspapei ■ reach Barnwell every day. Every issue car rice interesting store news from the dty merchants. Every possible in dueement is offered to attract trade Bargains are featured. The mail or der catalogs that occasionally floo< thia territory make their appeals for patronage, and as we pointed out week, many of these concerns maintain a special department sole business is to And towns where the local merchants do not ad weetiae in the local newspapers. With city merchants and mail or der houses so active to attract trade oa the one and local merchants fca an apathetic attitude on the other is R any wonder that the latter con^ ttaae to loat ground every week and month and year? •- Our Barnwell County merchants probably have as good or better val- MB than can be found in any store hi Augusta or Columbia, but the trouble is ■they do not bother to let ir customers know what they to offer. Consequently they drift away to the city. k is all well and good to talk about “Trading at Home" and The People-Sentinel is ready and willing to back that policy to the limit, but Hut will not do much good unlesa the merchants themselves wake up to the fact that advertising is not charity but a good sound business in vestment. ’—The story is told r,f an advertising solicitor who called on a small town :hant. “No,” said the latter, “I i't .think I’ll do any advertising. I’ve been here for ten years and the people all know 1 am in business.” The advertising man looked across the street and saw a church. Point ing to it he said, “That church has been there for 50 years, but the Ml is rung every Sunday morning.” Yes, the people know that certain men am in business but they must be told about the wares that are sold J. and the bargains in store for them. Mothing is truer than ”if you want ton art now busy searching about for M hook-up N lagislation upon which to tack another MeNary-Haugen bill, with the idea of forcing the next con gress and tlja admtniaration to accept it or see peffcaps their pet billy what- ever-it-may-be, go down to defeat Already leaders of the American Farm Bureau Federation, The Nation al Grange and the Farmers’ National Union have arranged an October meeting in Washington to prepare « program for a farm relief campaign, and have it ready and waiting for Congress when it convenes in De cember. The “hook-up” may be made with the Mississippi flood legislation which will then come up and, which at this time, seemingly is assured of action. With flood relief and farm relief a joint issue, backed by the agricul tural block in Congress, there is hope of pushing McNary-Haugen meas ure through. Chester H. Grey of the American Farm Bureau; L. J. Taber, president and Frederick Brenckman of the National Grange have already inform ed the President that 1 sentiment amongst the farmers is still st'-ong for the equalization fee feature of McNary-Haugen bill, and that any bill to find favor must provide fuii'Js to help them market crops. It is generally known that farm re lief advocates are going to point long and earnesly at “pig iron” and its increased tariff, in making demand for federal aid in agriculture. It • /ill be brought to mind that nearly every, thing said which “could not be done for agriculture” was done almost im mediately for pig iron through in creased tariff. In other words, “Government price fixing” seems okeh for industry—but not to be thought of for more than 4,000, farmers. .o(xT Perfect—but Second m am* tb keep on selling ’em, you’ve got to keep on telling- ’em.” ,* Farm Relief Legislation. Africultum-a friends in Federal af fairs have fVidiqaly rttyrted the Hate honored policy that “there is more than cne way to kill a cat.” News from Washington tells us quite fMHively that thought from farm relief is by no means a dead issue, la fact it Ja as much alive as at the moment it seemed about to become an •rtaality this Spring. leaders in Washing- I-aurs Maurrr, 17 of Boyertown.
