Have Narrow Escape
Blackvilli, Nov. 18.—Yesterday
'morning at about 9 o'clock S. A. Per
ry and his daughter. Miss Perry, of
Gap^ Cod, Mass., met with 'an auto
mobile accident which just missed be
ing n fatality. They were Florida
bonnd, and were traveling on Route
1 at a moderate rate of speed, ard
had Jost gotten well over the new fill
nereaa the Edisto River swamp, be
tween Blackville and Springfield,
when the rear right wheel of their
touring car collapsed utterly, causing
the mt to shoot in a circle to the ^p-
poaite side of the road where it turn-
over on its side. The car rested
against a n embankment at the side of
the road, about one and a half feet
v height, and this kept it from turn
ing completly over. In the turn across
the road the car reversed its direct
ion; headed back home for Cape Cod,
rather than Florida.
The curtains of the car were secure
ly fastened, and these were almost
r completely torn up by passers-by in
their effort to rescug the occupants of
the crippled car. When Mr. Perry and
his daughter were extricated from a
• debris of suit cases, hat boxes, water
bottles, blankets and'golf sticks, it
'mua found that they were uninjured
aara for a few minor scratches. At
the scene of the accident there is a
'.cotton field beside the road, and Miss
Bfhaiy applied locks of cotton to her
deeding scratches, saying that she
• thought it nice, sirce she must bo
wounded, to have surgical dressings
*o gear a t hand. *
As the touriaia crossed the Edisto
fill, which is two miles . n length,
workmen on it uoticed t T .Tc their car
^ wobbled. Had the wheel collapsed
on rite fill, which is nine feet in
height and without guard railing, the
'outcome would have been very dif-
