SUBSCRIPTION RATIS: 1 Om Year — She Months Months (Strictly ta Adraaeo.) THURSDAY. AUGUST 12TH, 1026 Aadther Ban per Crop. Believe it or not, the government's crop reporters estimate that the cotton crop this year, based on conditions as of August lot; will be 16~62I^00 bales thus it would appear that the farmers have succeeded, in the face of every warning against the wisdom of so do ing* of producing another bumper crop on top of last year's huge' pro duction to still further depress the price of the fleecy staple. And if the entire crop sells below the coot of production, the fanners have nobody to blame but themselves. - ^ Experience is always g dear teacher, but H seems that the cotton farmers are a class that absolutely refuses to profit by experience, no matter how eoeHy. It has been conclusively proven, time and again, that more money is received for a small crop than for a large one and that the small crop can be grown at a much cheaper cost in money and labor. Present cotton quotations, with lit- tie likelihood of improvement, indi cate that any hope of an abundant prosperity this Fall, based on cotton profits, have gone where the woodbine twineth, and “hope deferred maketh tile heart sick.** Of course, some un- foraeen calamity to the present crop would bring about an advance m prices, but unless that happens it would seem that the farmers may as well reconcile themselves to I >w P r 10. There lent much use to holler for government aid when the farmers res refuse to use their own effective remedy—red nation in and the consequent -reduc tion in the number of bsles pro-iuv-ed. I “ ' . . V V*. ^ The output of these three corporations is drawn from the streams of our own neighbohood— Augusta alone producing 24,000 horsepower from tbe Savabnah River. Added to this great volume are all the steam plants thpt the central towns, which in the past, have been the sole source of electric supply. By this modern arrangement, these steam equipments will be held in reserve, to be used as auxiliaries, to be operated only at very infrequent intervals, w^ien repairs may be needed to the water wheels, or other branches of the service. To anticipate future needs, and provide for the boundless commercial and agricultural activi- ty already awakened m this section, tne Augusta-Aiken Railway and Electric Corporation has re cently completed a physical connection at Toccoa, Georgia, with the limitless supply of hydro power generated in-tbe five States of Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and distri buted through tbe switch boards of the Georgia Railway and Power Company at Atlanta.
