Posse Hunting Negro
Who Assaulted Woman
Charlie Sanders, an escaped con
vict from the Anderson County chain-
K** n K. criminally assaulted a young
white woman of the Anderson Mills
village Thursday night, after decoy
ing the woman and her sister-in-law
from their home to a lonely sp.it
several miles in the country. He
threatened the woman’s life with a
razor in order to arcoqnplish his pur
pose. The victim is a sister-in-law
i ——»r~
of a convict op one of the Anderson
County chaingangs a nd the negro
lured the women away with a story
that the husband had escaped from
the gang and was lying wounded in a
lonely patch of woods.
After committing the^assault, the
negro threatened to kill both women,
but their pleading caused .him to spare
their lives. Another negro named
Karl Donald escaped at the same time
and it is believed that a double at
tack was planned but that Donld be
came frightened and did not meet
Sanders a fter he had decoyed the
two women from their homes.
Armed posses of officers and citi
zens have been scouring the country
for the perpetrator of the dastardly
outrage. * t

ever, his wife and friends were hope
ful of his early recovery. The fam
ily physician was called and everything
possible was done, but the dreaded af
fliction rapidly progressed a nd he
continued to grow worse until Satur
day morning about two o’clock, when
he passed into the Great Beyond.
The funeral services were conduct
ed a t the Baptist Church, by the pas
tor, in the—presence of a large con
course of relatives and friends, after
which the body was buried with Ma
sonic honors. It was said to havo
been the most largely attended funer
al in that city for many years.
It will be remembered by the older
citizens of Barnwell County that Mr.
McArthur came here about the year
1881 with the 4 rm of Moore and Mc-
Laurin, being originally from Hoxlii,
“Carolina., He was connected with
this firm for a great many years, and
during his stay in Barnwell County
hei made many warm and devoted
friends. He married Miss Georgia ^
“I
Greene, daughter of Mr. George W.
.Greene, of Rosemary and Richland
townships.
Mr. and Mrs. McArthur were
blessed with two sons, who were ta
ken by death in early manhood, and
he leaves surviving him his widow
and several nieces and nephews, all of
whom'are residents of Miami and
Live Oak, Fia. A number of them at
tended the funeral. /
Mr. McArthur Was one*of,the best
men the writer ever knew, a gentle
man of the highest type—true to his
friends, kind and obliging to every
body—and a devoted husband. To
know him was to admire and esteem
him.—Contributed.
