m v PAQB BIGHT. ■ ' lu— _ji j V ,-l _X_" ' > ® c teNr rX^,4* X'', §L Jku—w ' to WSluton Paper fr: iVL mf is- . ^Cjtn last week’s issue of The WiiHg- ton Way there was an editorial heed ed “Dustin* and Mblases.” We al* ways appreciate the co-operation we received/ from our local county papers, because we recognise the fact that the local papers are a great med ium in reaching many farmers; we also agree that the paper ha* a just right to determine what makes up the news and to a great extent what is carried in their columns. When it comes to the proper methods of the control of boll weevil we must not be guided by ‘ our particular opinions whether they are such that makes us believe in one method or the othpr. From all facts which have been gathered from actual tests carried on in farmer’s fields and experiment stations we are only able to deter mine by these the l>est method of combatting the weevil.- Personally, I have not discouraged the use of liquid poison on small cot ton, and as a matter of fact early in the season I have told my farmers fcvhere a number of weevils were pres ent at that time to go ahead and ap- pty poison in the form, at liquid or doit. With all this information which I have we therefore find that the most profitable methods of control of; weevil has ^been dusting method. The Editor of The Williston Way re ferred to my statement of last week in reference to one or two large prom inent farmers who were adtocates of liquid poisoning afid changed over to dusting-. I did-not refer to any local farmers in Barnwell County, and want to say that any one has a right to their particular Opinions, but we realize that opinions are just the mere expression of a belief, while the actual results gotten from differ ent tests will necassarily show eon- ggpively which is the better plahyps- 0 f pecially so where these tests have been tarried on for a number of years. As far as the County Agent’s position is concerned,! am necessarily interested in assisting the farmers to spend their labor and money wisely for the control of boll weevil, and necessarily I advise them as-Umow beet. Ther* has been numbers of secret concoctions and patented mixtures of boll weevil poisoning which have been sold to come extent for several yean, however, - none of these have ever shown by tests to be of suffi cient value to cause them to continue to be sold in any quantities, and at thifhame time if a news paper de sires to restrict its news articles in such a way as to make it to the best advantage for such manufacturing con cerns to carry advertising with them that is their privilege, and that is a matter to be determined by the news paper and the manufacturing people. In reference to such practical, men as Coker, I will say for |he taforma- tion of the people that the business concern of Mr. Coker, which is the Pedigreed Seed Company, of Harts- ville, S. C 0 has the agency for the utility duster in four and a half States, this is a one-horse dustlhg machine, and Mr. Coker, I am reliably informed, is a very strong advocate of Jiytematic dusting of cotton, be ginning at least this season of the year and continuing_.over. Again I want to say that it/is not a question of information in refer ence to boll weevil control,, and where infestation has increased and is now showing damage in cotton fields the feasible facts which have been se cured through a period of years show that the proper means of control is by systematic^4p*ting. v .
