Felix Finley is the only candidate for the place. -Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Lewis and baby of Lockhart are visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Lewis in Pickens. -Arthur Jewell, son of Sam Jewell of Calhoun, was run over and seriously injured by a hand car Thursday after noon. He is improving. -The series of meetings scheduled to begin at the Pickens Baptist church last Sunday have been postponed on account of the serious illness of Pastor Ramsay's son. -Dr. G. H. Abernethy, of Liberty, who had announced as a candidate for the house of representatives, failed to file his pledge last week and is thereby eliminated from the race. -Miss Lillie May Shirley of Liberty route 3 and Mr. James A. Chastain of Pickens route 2 were happily married by Judge Newbery at his residence last Sunday afternoon, August 11. -Miles Allgood, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. 13. Allgood of near Pickens, has been visiting his parents. Miles is a railroad detective with headquarters in Salisbury. N. C., and has many friends around here who are alway t him. Keai to see him. '--Messrs. Houston nnd $. W. Craig of Greenville spent Saturday night in Pickens on their way to their old home on Keowee to spend a vacation. On account of trouble with the engine of their big Chandler car they were forced to also spend Sunday here. -- Rev. C. B. Atkinson is conducting a protracted meeting at Pleasant Hill church. Services are being held out doors and much good being accom plished. Report says that up to last Friday night twenty-eight new mem bers had joined and Mr. Atkinson had not yet begun to shell the wvoods or pull in his drag net. -J. R. J1. Anthony recently received a letter from his son Ernest who is ir France in which he says he has been ir the first line trenches and likes it better there than hack b)ehindl. Also says h( is enjoying good health. Young An thony is a member of a machine gur company and a corporal. He has beer in France about three months. -J. Frank Williams and family ol Sumter county are visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Blarney H. Williams, ol the Cedar Rock section, and other rela tives and friends in Pickens county, al of whom are glad to see them. Mr. Williams is farm demonsteation ageni of the rich county of Sumter and one of the most successful planters of thai progressive county. -Two candidates announced for the house of representatives since the las1 issue of The Sentinel. W. E. Scarboro, of the avia tion squadron signal corps of the army, is visiting his wife who is spending the summer at the home of her brother, W. L. Matheny, in Pickens. Capt. Scar boro is a very pleasant gentleman. He is at present stationed at Langley Field, Hampton, Va., but is expecting soon to be sent across the sea, -Joe Acker has resigned his position with the Easley Lumber Co. and will go to the shidyards at Charleston. His family will remain in Pickens. Will Crane has taken Mr. Acker's place with the lumber company. Mr. Acker is one of the best wood workmen in the country and feels like he ought to give Uncle Sam the benefit of his talent. -Two members of the state tax commission will be in Pickens on Thurs day, August 29, for the purpose of dis cussing with the people the present tax situatoh. They will try to explain why it was necessary to place land at the present valuation and will endeavor to answer any questions in regard to it. This is a live question with the people just now and a large audience it ex pected. The meeting will be in the court house. If you are interested, be there. Anyone having figures which they think show why the land values should not be increased are especially invited to be here and present the fig ures.
