Townes and family. -Sheriff Roark collected $1,414.55 de linquent tax money up to the end of the fiscal year. June 30. This is about 30 per cent more than usual. -The regular campaign meeting of the candidates for governor and other state offices will be held at Pickens Wednesday morning, July 17, beginning about 11 o'clock. -Sam J. Looper, who is connected with the constabulary force at Charles, ton, spent several .ays last week witi his father, E. Frank Looper, and other relatives in Pickens county. -Mr. and Mrs. James P. Carey, Jr., and little daughter Katherine motored to lendersonville last week. Mr. Carey returned by rail and Mrs. Carey and daughter will spend some time at this resort. -W. A. Pickens county officers have captured four more soldiers who deserted from Camp Sevier. Twov( of them wvere caught near the rock quarry last week. TJhey were from Alabama. The other two were from Tennessee and were caught Monday about two miles below Pickens on the Easley road. -B. H1. McWhorter, of Douglasville, Ga., was recently lodged in the Pick ens jail charged with selling stolen au tomobiles. Two stolen cars which were bought from McWhorter were found in this county and identified by heir owners who lived in Georgia. Mc Whor ter was taken from here to Atlantaand lodgedin jail there. --T'1he state War Savings committee urges that these who pledged them selves in the June W. S. S. campaign to purchase War Savings Stamps dur ing the remaining months of the year should not wait until the last minute but should co-operate with the govern ment by purchasing the specified amount of stamps at the earliest day possible. -Fifty-two Pickens county selectmen left Monday morning for Camp Wads worth, Spartanburg, to enter the army. As usual, a meeting was held in their honor Sunday afternoon and addresses were made by Dr. D. M. Ramsay of Greenville end B. A. Ilagood, Esq., of Charleston. The court house was not large enough to hold the audience. A large crowd was also at the depot Mon day to see the boys off. ---A house owned by Ehnore Chapman and occupied by Leo Gillespie and fain ily, located between Libjerty and Pick ens, was destroyed by fire Monday of last week. Mr. Gillespie also lost most of his household goods, It is supposed tInat the fire originated from a defective chimney. A new house will be built soon where the old one stood.
