Miss Fay Smith, the telephone opera tor of Liberty, was married last week to Policeman Batson of Greenville. - This month the county treasurer is adding 7 per cent penalty to all taxes collected as provided by law. Tax books close March 15th. M. J. Welborn of route 3, was in town Saturday for the first time in quite a while. About five weeks ago he got his foot painfully burned and has been unable to get around much since. One hundred men are being examined for army service every week in Pickens county. They are not now being sent to the army, but those who pass the physical examination will be called later. Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Jones of the Ambler section, have returned from Calhoun, Ga., where they were called on account of the death of Mrs. Jones' brother, who was with the U. S. navy. Corioral Paul McClanahan of the N. A, of Camp Jackson, Columbia, is at the home of his parents on a short leave of absence. Ile says he has had good treatment and his looks bears out the statement. F. B. Ponder of Dacusville, was at the county seat on business last Thurs day. Mr. Ponder has been confined for the past seven months with rheumatism imd many friends are gla(d to know he is Again able to be out. Miss Thibadeau, a celebrated French beauty specialist, is spending the week mn Pickcns. She i.s a native of Toul, Prance. and has been in this country only a few years. Two of her brothers are now fighting in the French army. Miss Thibadeau has a very attractive personality and is a most interesting talker. Ladies are invited to call u ponl her at the Pickens Drug Co. store. Rev. T. P. Nellson, a wgill-known citi 7.en of Liberty route :, was stricken witif paralysis last Friday. Mr. Nelson was traveling in a wagon andI( by him self when stricken. lie was on his way to his old home below Central and his mule kept going unguided until their destination was reached. Mr. Nelson's right side is affected and tho in a dfan gerous condition he is doing wonderful ly well for a man 77 years old. Many friends trust that he will soon recover. Deputy Collector T. J. NI. Scott, in charge of raiding force, and special employee Jake Gosnell have been trans ferred from Greenville to Pickens and their headquarters are now located here. They are United States government employees and their main business is suppressing illicit liquor traffic. There has been a good deal of complaint made about whiskey made in the mountains of Pickens reaching the soldier camp at Greenville and the government seems determined to put a stop to it. Several people have told us that they have read "Over the Top," and without exception they all found it interestin, entertaining and instructive. It is not of ten that a weekly newspaper is able to give its readers a story of this cali bre and wve consider oiurselves fortunate in being able to secur~e it for Sentinel readers.
