The Ge One of the greatest events in modern times will be the re union of the blue and the gray on the once bloody battlefield of Gettysburg July 1, 2, 3 and 4. This is to comemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the most terrible conflict written on the pages of history and written there in the blood of our fathers. The legislature of Pennsyl vania took the intiative step when by an act in 1909 a com mission. was appointed to con sider and arrange for a proper and fitting observance of this great event with authority to invite the co-operation of con gress and all the states. The commission was gratified to know that every state acquiesc ed in their plans and have ac cepted their invitation to be represented and participate in the celebration. The program for the occasion briefly is as follows: July 1. Veterans day. All surviving soldiers North and South will take part as invited guests. July 2. Military day. Under command of the chief of staff of the United States army. July 3. Civic day. Under the personal direction of the governor of Pennsylvania, with governors of other states and their staff. July 4. National day, at which the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme court will preside, and the President, Vice-President, the Cabinet, Justices of the Supreme court and other high officials will par ticipate. At high noon on the last day the cornerstone of aPeace Mem orial will be laid by the presi dent which will conclude the exercises. All yeteran3 who attend whether from the North or South will be the invited guests of the State of Pennsylvania and will be provided and cared for at the expense of that great state. All the Confederate veterans should avail themselyes of this opportunity who possibly can. The record our men mad4 Is on'e of which wve all are proud It was there about thirty thous and true, patriotic Southerr men gave their life for the causi they held dear. and about a' ttysburg equal number of Northern men perished during the awful bat tie, There the numbers engag ed were greater than in any other battle during the war, and were more nearly equal on each side. The result of the terrible struggle could not be claimed as a victory by either side.. The most unsurpassed bravery and devotion of Amer can manhood was exhibited. On this battlefield stands an im posing monument to Gen. Lee erected by his hosts of friends in the South on the very spot where he stood during the charge of the Confederates led by Pickett and Pettigrew. This among many other reasons should inspire his old comrades to attend the reunion so they may see the place once occupied by their chief tan. The Government and the State of Pennsylvania are mak ing elaborate preparations for the occasion and expect to en tertain at least (50,000 veteran:; of the two armies. Every care for the comfort and health of the old soldiers will be taken. A great camp will be established and lined on either side of great avenues will be six thousand walled tents, each to contain eight cots with blankets. The camp will be lighted with 500 electric lights. There will be 400 great cooking ranges and outfits, 800 cooks, 800 assistant cooks and 130 bakers. About one and a half million pounds of food of various kinds will be used, consisting of meats, cere als, vegetables, bread, coffee and tea. Three ai teslan wells of a million gallons daily will furn ish the water suppl y. There will be 87 hospitals and infirm ary tents with 130 surgeons and nurses in attendance. Within this camp city will be a railroad station, express, tele graph and telephone offices, a newspaper, store and postoffice. just for one week. And all this free to tho veterans. Gov.. Toner of Pennsylvania sends out to the Confederate veterans this message: 0t "I want it well understood by the whole Confederate soldiery - that y ou a re coming as 'i guests of the State.of whici aI have the honor to be the chiet Sexnecutive, and It will make na ReunionI difference whether the ian from the South comes in citizens attire or wears the old gray uni form. Whether the uniform be blue or gray the wearer will be heartily welcome. No one has greater admiration for the Confederate soldier and for the superb manner in which he fought battles than I have." But the leading and crowning feature of this great occasion will be the colebration of fifty years of peace by the American people. The beautiful senti ment expressed by Col. Arthur Cowan who fought with ut most desperation with his bat tery-the First New York-at the point charged by Pickett, is well worth reproducing. lie says: "We are united now in love for one country and one flag, but neither we nor they have ceased to love the flag that led us in that fight. Bring them back from every State! The Starry Banner and the South ern Cross! Unfurl them again at Gettysburg! The celebra tion would be colorless without them. The 'conquered banner' was furled at Appomattox "'Yet 'tis ' wreathed around with glory, And 'twill live in song and story, Though its folds are in the dust. "Bring them back, unfurl them again: and side by sid( with 'Old Glory' the soldiers of Meade and Grant, and the sol diers of Lee and Longstreet brave and loyal, will march to gether with peace and good wil at Gettysburg. Spread th< message throughout the land: "Peace on earth, good will t< men." The railroads have granted f rate of one cent per mile for the trip. All the expense, therefor< the old veterans will incur of the entire trip will be their rail road fare which from this sec tion will be about $10, an everyone who can should begi now to arrange to go.
