? j-~T~-^ ^^^^^^^^^ Uti -rt of the Library Con tait tee of inf Ladies' College Association. (Some weeks' BRO Ute society editor of. The Intelligencer ? requested tho ?lui irma ii of the library commUtee to * Ki ve ber for publication a report of the committee's work. As the chair man had offered her resignation, to take effect December 31, 1914, and expected to give a full reprot to tho College Association, she promised t? send a copy to The Intelligencer. Be low ls thc report): Thrco years ago. while Anderson College was in process of building, Prof. J. K. Brendin, the dean of tho college, asked thc writer to act as chairman of a library committee, whose duty it should be 40 raise funds to receive gifts of booka and to arouse interest in tho minda and bra rt s of the people Ja establishing a library in keeping with tho high standard that tho promoters of the college had set before them. No oth ers were appointed on the committco by the dean, hut tho chairman was re quested to select her own helpers. A little later a Ladles,' College Associa tion was organised and Mrs. E. F. Cochran became president. She re tained tho chairman of the library committee previously appointed, and approved the policy already adopted by the chairman, which was n'ot to se lect a permanent committee, but from time to "time to call upon different: people for aid in various ways. This plan has been. continued during the three years (and more), and this ex planation is made so that thoso wish ing to know who the members of thc committee are, (or have been), may know that they are (or hnve boen) all whose names are Included in this re? port as giving help in any way. At ike very outset Prof. Breedis 'handed over to tho chairman a list ot people who had promised te give him money for the librsry. Them aro 13 name? on the list, but aa only two have the amount appended, and we do noe know whether the other ever paid or not, we give only those two nsmes. * whick are. Dr. Olga Pruitt, ?2; and Dr. A. L. Smothers,.$5. The writer wishes lt to bo under stood that this report does not claim to bo an exhaustive ono concerning the gifts of money and books to the library during these three years, but simply those funds and gifts made through her. or reported to" her by the' donators Even of those there moy ?ii; rfOme Oiii?s?i???, ?Uo '?G i?b? o? written record. Anyono knowing ol auch omission would do us a jkvor tc bring lt to our remembrance. In tho summer of 1912 wo decided to have a concert by local talent. Ii was to bo In tho opera house on thc evening of Jilly 4. Mr. Furmun, Sdittli thon bad charge of the opera house and he let u? have lt very cheap a; his contribution tn the library. W< IBS. W. A. HUDUENH, Editor, Phone risk we could recall thc names of all vho so kindly promised to take part 1 n the concert, hut only a partial li?t' 'i t'ould be possible, now. Just the- day. - lefore the concert, however, through J he efforts of Miss Margaret Evans. 1 md others, Mr. anti Mrs. Reed Miller, 1 vho were visiting in Anderson, were irevailed upon to sing for us (al hough they had come to rest), so the 1 ?tiler concert was postponed indefl I it ely, and really "never came off. Mr. and Mrs. Miller sang to a full louse, and most kindly and raagnanl nously refused to take any of the pro cods, making that amount as their rift to the college of Mr. Miller's lome town.. The net proceeds of this oncert were a little over $200, which ?.mount was at once turned over to ' >rof. t?rcedln 'who Invested lt in ? ?oks. , 1 Not long after this the chairman be- i an another method of raising funds, ?ul also began keeping the funds in ' he savings department ot the Bank if Anderson in the name of the Col- , ege Library Committee. ThiB new dan which was approved by the prca- l dent and members of the College As- I oclation and also the college faculty, .nd which seemed to promise so ; mich, was in reality not so successful 4 we had anticipated, ami was a very edlous, never-ending way to get I aoney. The plan was this: All or- i ?nixed alumnae associations were I isked to make donations to the An- I lerson College library in the name of i heir alina mater; and where there ; ras no real organization, the alumni ind alumnae were to be seen indi vi- ? iually by somo one appointed by the halrman. A good many of the or ranlzed associations promised to nake gifts, and nome have responded leautlfully. Pefhaps the others still Dtend doing so! We sbov ld be glad to give the names if all w\o have thus responded, as rell ss of all who worked the plan, tut lt is impossible .to do so from the irganized associations, as they sent heir gifts to the chairman by check nd without Individual names; either, hall we give the names of those BO kilted individually, since we can't rive the others. It would not be fair, lowever. not to givje the names ot hose who so kindly used a good deal it time collecting from others. They ire: Mr. Stark Sullivan frc ra the iorason alumni, Miss Bessie Major rom the Hollins alumnae, and Miss telen Sarrias iron* the Bessie Tin ilumnae. We now append the names ot tho rarious schools and colleges making rifts, and the amounts given : Jmestoue College .. .$15.00 (and E. A/ Poo's works.) ?
