ATTEMPT MADE TO MURDER MAN Miscreant Hiding in Jesse Duck worth's Barn Shot at Him Three Times Sunday Jesse Duckworth, a well known Anderson county farmer, had a nar-' row escape last Sunday night from being killed when sonie unknown white man fired at him three times. The' attack was entirely unlooked for and by tho time Mr. Duckworth suc ceeded in drawing his pistol and re turning the fire his assailant bad made a get-away. . According to Mr. Duckworth's story of tho happening, he. drove a horse to his home, eight miles north of Anderson, Sunday night* arriving there shortly ofter ll o'clock. He en tered the barn to placo tho animal In the stable-and as he did po' he saw a man step out Into the hall-way of thc barn. Without a word of warning the man fired a pistol. The first bullet struck Mr. Duckworth's coat, passed on through his shirt and out tho other ?Ide ot his coat. Ho was so >\? not move and a second later tho man tonlsbod by tho ni rack that he could again tired. This bullet ?also pene trated Mr. Duckworth's coat but did not graze his-body. .Dy that time Mr. Duckworth had gotton his own pistol out of his pocket and he began to Are, shooting at the fleeing man four times. The assailant jumped-a fence and escaped. Mr. Duckworth fol lowed him and found his trail but aa be waa on tho point, of telephoning to Anderson for bloodhounds, a hard rain began to fall. Mr. Duckworth aaya that he baa no Idea ot who the man. was, other than that, be knew him to be white. He. said that os the man would fire each time tho flash of the powder from the pistol would light up his countcnttnut? and lie could say that his fa^e waa wblte. Either the man was in the barn" with a view to stealing a horse or ho went there because of-personal- mallee against'Mr. Duckworth and in an ef fort to toko his Ufo. Tho latter would seem to be the more, plausible expia, nation Since, Mr. Duckworth's brother had Just been to- tho barn, less than 16 . minute/r before the shooting 'took place and he noted nothing out' of the ordinary. .'The''case han been placed lu tho bauds of tho offlcem and vit is be lieved, that the miscreant, way be ar rested. . . ? \ "r ' ' ?" v .;; FARMERS OF COUNTY TO SEND REPRESENTATIVES SEVRAL WILL GO When Southern Cotton Congress Convenes Tomorrow, Ander son People Ateend When 'JIP Southern Cotton Con groHH ls called to onlor in Washington Wednesday to face, the situation, which lias boen described as desper ate, in regard to tho colton crop, An derson county will bc well repre sented.
