The j\retc? tnd Courier yesterday Sf" contained a brief statement ih it? Columbia correspondence vindicating' thfx . Bureau from the charge of the Columbia Register that it had made an "ill-timed &' detraction''in referring to the embarrassment of the Viennfi Bent-Wood Facniture Company of this city. It was deemed proper to make this vindication in deference to those of the readers of the Hews and Courier who, residing in Columbia, see the Register. Conclusive evidence of the hypocrisy of the liegister was adduced in the fact chat the manager of the IVews and Courier Bureau had before he quoted the name of the embarrassed company, telephoned the Register reporter, offering to withhold the name of the coinyany lest the publication might do it harm, and also offering to dismiss the matter in a few if*-." words, if the Register would do the same, which propositions were declined 'by the Register reporter. In addition to the main attack, there were crowded into a few lines on another subject at loast half a dozen falsehoods intended to prejudice the character of Mr. Gonzales. The article was of such a nature as to preclude discussion in the columns of x ; the News and Courier. It ha'd evi4ently been written by Mr. Thomas Jefferson LaMotte, the local reporter of the llegistcr. Mr. Gonzales, at about 1 o'clock to-day, found Mr. LaMotte in the office of the chief clerk of the agricultural department, and forcibly Impressed his answer to the attack upon the left eye of Mr. LaMotte. Being restrained by several genilemcn present from further emphasizing in the mannei indicated, his resentment at the newspaper attack upon him, Mr. Gonzales took his usual round about the State L- House, and did not meet Mr. LaMotte again. At 2 o'clock he walked up Main street accompanied by Comptroller General Stoney. When he reached the ? Fates and Courier Bureau he bid his .companion good day and turned to entei Jhis office. Before the sentence was finished Mr. Gonzales struck at the proprietor af the Jief/istery who dodging the bloyr, was only grazed by ii moving backwards in order, it is pre sumcd, to secure room for striking. Mr Calvo pulled from under his overcout i p ' twisted cowhide and .struck his oppo.nent. Mr. Gonzales immediately closeti ;in and shoved Mr. Calvo against thf glass window of Dr. Jackson's store, jbreaking the glass. When Mr. Calvo was raised he still expressed the belief that he was killed He was taken to a doctor, who dressed ? ' his wounds. As he reached the corner of Main and Washington streets and was about to turn into Iiavr Range a young man, who had been sitting with Mr. VV. S. Monteith 011 the steps of the insurance building, located on the corner, left his place and ' rapidly followed. Mr. Monteith called to him to stop. Mr. Gonzales turned ' 'and confronted the young man. As he .came up he said something excitedly ' and incoherently, then announced himself as William Calvo, u brother of the Register's proprietor, and then began to curse Mr. Gonzales. The latter drew a light pistol and dealt his opponent one blow over the head, while the latter simultaneously reached for his pistol. Another moment would have settled the matter by the death of one or both of the parties, but on the instant a policeman threw himself upon Sir. Calvo and . Mr. Monteith bore down on Mr. Gonr.a' les. The policeman reinforced by another, subdued Mr. Calvo, after a struggle in which the officer wns bruised about the face. Mr. Gonzales's pistol arm was held, and in the struggle he and Mr. Monteith fell together in the doorway of Mancke's saloon. Here sever a bystanders interfered and wrenched the pistol from Mr. Gonzales. Mr. Calvo was conveyed to the station house. Arthur LaMotte, a son of Mr. Thomas Jefferson LaMotte, was waiting for Mr. Monteith in front of the hotel, bnt Mr. Monteith failed to find him there. It is also reported that the two Calvos and 1 two others are seeking a collision with Mr. Gonzales on the street, bnt the latter has not met them in his. evening's ' walk. s. o. o. An Ordinance To Raise Supplies for the Town of Abbeville, S. C., for the Year 1886. Bli it ordained by the Town Council of the town of Abbeville and by the authority of the same, That a tax for the sums and in the manner hereinafter named shall be raised and paid into the treasury of the Town Council for the uses und purposes thereof for the year 1886. i " Section t. On every one hundred dollars of the cash value of all real and ncrsoual cs' tute within the incorporation of said town ot Abbeville the sum ot fifteen cents. Skc. 2. On each billiard or pool table or 1 ten pin alley kept for hire the sum of Twentyfive Dollars on the first table or alley and , Twenty-five dollars for each table or alley more than one kept by the same owner. For each license to retail spiritui o?s liquors in the town of Abbeville the sum of Two Hundred Dollars for the year, bejini ning with the first day of January, 1880, and ending on the first day of January, 1887.
